Background: Orthodontic bracket is one of the components in a fixed orthodontic treatment. The influence of the oral cavity of an orthodontic bracket is a type IV hypersensitivity reaction due to corrosion on the bracket. The solution of extracts of betel leaf (Piper betle L.) of 50% which could affect corrosion. This study aimed to know the effect of betel leaf extract solution (piper betle L.) 50% against metal ion release.Method: The research method was “The Post Test Control Group Desain”, consists of four large groups respectively soaked with 6 units of brackets, consisting of a solution of betel leaf extract (piper betle L.) 50% (treatment), aquabidest (negative control), artificial saliva (negative control) and Naf (positive control) incubated for 7 days with a temperature of 370 C. Then ion measurement using the tool inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrophotometry (ICP-OES).Results: this study showed that the average release of ion the largest was on the solution of betel leaf extract (0.157167) then aquabides (0.086967), artificial saliva (0,08833) and sodium flouride (0.005533). Test results of Mann-Withney showed the presence of significant difference (p<0.05) release of ion Ni, Cr and Fe on four groups except among artificial saliva groups and sodium fluoride but the group that was soaked in a solution of betel leaf extract (piper betle L.) 50% occured a release of ion Ni, Cr and Fe higher. This is because the samples werestored in solution of betel leaf extract (Piper betle L.) of 50% which is a liquid electrolyte that can cause ion release. Conclusion: Betel leaf extract (piper betle L.) 50% is not effective to be used as an alternative to slow corrosive to metal ion (Ni, Cr and Fe) on a metal bracket.

Background: Glass ionomer cement (GICs) has become a common restorative material in dental practice. Therefore, there are so many GIC's brands can be found in the market with tremendous price disparities GIC brands can be found in the market with huge price disparity; Price of one brand can be up to tenfold than the others. For the cost-efficiency reason, many clinicians prefer the more economical. Therefore, questions arise from the clinician, does it influence the clinical performance. Method: Six cylindrical specimens (10mm x 2mm) from four GIC brands (Fuji IX, FXUltra, GlassyCem and Sangchi) were made based on the respective factory instructions and stored for 24 hours until the final setting reached. Micro Vickers hardness tester (Shimadzu) and Surface roughness tester were used as surface characterizations measurement. Collected data were analyzed statistically. Results: Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney analysis showed that Fuji IX and FXUltra significantly (p<0.05) higher surface hardness (68.47 and 63.29 VHN respectively) compared to GlassyCem and Sangchi (38.53 and 36.70 VHN). While for surface roughness measurement, Fuji IX has the highest surface roughness, 7.22 µm (p<0.05). GIC’s clinical performance is affected by composition and powder-liquid ratio. Strontium in Fuji IX could increase surface hardness. The high powder-liquid ratio in Fuji IX and FXUltra improve its clinical performance compared to the other group. Conclusion: The more expensive GIC (Fuji IX and FX ultra) had better surface hardness with a slight difference in surface roughness. Therefore, clinicians should choose GIC based on cost-efficiency without ignoring clinical performance.

Background: Composite resin is one of the most used materials in dentistry because of the simplicity and high aesthetic value. One of the varieties of composite resin is prepolymerized composite resin. Some research show that prepolymerized composite resin has relatively low mechanical strength. Therefore fiber needs to be added in prepolymerized composite resin. The aim of this research is to find out the effect of adding non dental glass fiber into tensile strength fiber reinforced composite. Method: This research used true experimental method with post test only control group design, there are two groups, the first one is prepolymerized composite resin with additional non dental glass fiber. The data has been tested with parametric independent T-test. Result: The result showed the average flexural strength of prepolymerized composite resin without additional non dental glass fiber was 10.6625 Mpa, while the prepolymerized composite resin + non dental glass fiber was also 18.2263 Mpa. Independent T-test showed the p value = 0.000 Conclusion: The conclusion of this research is that prepolymerized resin + non dental glass fiber has higher tensile strength than composite resin without additional non dental glass fiber, thus it can be used as alternative choice applied in dentistry.

Background: GIC is very susceptible to contamination especially within 24 hours after mixing during the setting reaction. To protect against this, a coating agent can be applied. This study aims to determine the difference in fluoride release levels in Glass Ionomer Cement using coating agents such as EQUIA Coat, Varnish, and Cocoa Butter.Method: 21 cylindrical samples were prepared from conventional GIC (GC Fuji type II) and divided into 3 groups (groups I, II, and III) of 7 each. Group I samples were coated with EQUIA Forte Coat, group II with Varnish, and group III with Cocoa Butter. Each group of samples was stored in glass bottles soaked in distilled water for 7 days in an incubator at 37˚C. The fluoride release was measured using a 2010 DR spectrophotometer, while Alumina, natrium, Kalium, and Calcium releases were measured by an ICP-OES assay. The data obtained were analyzed comparatively using one-way ANOVA and the Kruskall-Wallis statistical test.Result: EQUIA Forte Coat showed the lowest concentration of released particles of Aluminum, Kalium, Natrium, and Fluoride, while the highest concentration was found in the Varnish group. Conclusion: The results concluded that EQUIA Forte Coat can seal GIC material well. Nevertheless, particles released in all groups are still considered to be safe for clinical usage.
