Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effects of anchoring in task performance appraisal. It was hypothesized that there would be difference score measuring task performance with high anchoring and low anchoring methods. High anchoring method was predicted to show higher scores rather than using low anchoring method. Participants were 117 post-graduate students from Master of Management in Universitas Gadjah Mada. They were assigned in two groups. The first group (N=70) was instructed to rate an employee from lower to higher score (high anchoring method), while the second group (N=47) was instructed to rate the employee from higher to lower score (low anchoring method). Result of independent sample T-test showed that anchoring method had no significant effect on task performance appraisal. Factors which might be affecting this result are discussed

Abstract

Humans are often viewed as rational beings. Studies on behavioral economics regarding rationality depend on both economic theories of rational decision making, as well as psychological cognitive theories behind mental and behavioral processes. Experimental research over the last half century has shown systematic deviations from the principle of rationality, also called anomaly, in individual judgment and decision-making. The theoretical explanation for the anomaly currently emphasizes on the limitations of individual rationality. Furthermore, limitations in rationality are seen as a universal feature of the individual. However, in recent times, there have been studies that attempt to prove individual differences as a factor behind anomalies in judgment and decision making. This paper attempts to summarize both points of view, and discusses the need to develop an instrument to measure rationality as an individual discriminatory factor in judgment and decision making.

Abstract

The sunk-cost fallacy is an anomaly in decision-making that has been proven in various experimental studies. However, individual differences in the tendency to fall into sunk-cost fallacy have not been sufficiently reported. This preliminary study contains a psychometric evaluation report of the Resistance to Sunk Costs (RtSC) measurement instrument, a component of the Adult Decision Making Competence instrument (A-DMC; De Bruin, Parker, & Fischhoff, 2007) which is modified into Indonesian socio-cultural and economic contexts. The RtSC instrument uses a situational judgment test model, therefore it is adequate to measure the psychological construct of sunk-cost fallacy. The data analysis techniques used in this study were Item Factor Analysis (IFA) and graded response models. Respondents in this study were 217 students in Indonesia. The analysis results show that the 1-factor model of resistance to sunk costs fits the data. At the item level, based on the IFA, it was found that two out of ten items were found to be misfits. The results of the GRM analysis on the remaining eight items indicate that the items fit the GRM. However, the distinguishing power and reliability were found to be low. It can be concluded that this preliminary study provides a variety of important information as suggestions for improvement for our modified scale. Several theoretical and methodological implications are discussed.

Abstract

Research on the instrument of materialism as a personality in Indonesia is still lacking. The purpose of this study is to determine the psychometric properties using Rasch model on materialistic personality scale. This study was conducted on 505 diploma/S1/S2 students aged 18-25 years old using accidental sampling technique. Data analysis used the Rasch model which is supported by Winstep software. The results showed there were 16 items that fit with the Rasch model, rating scale functioned appropriately, reliability (item=0,99, person=0,55, Cronbach's Alpha=0,61). The analysis results also showed that there were five items that were gender biased, and very high accuracy of measurement information would be obtained at the moderate materialistic personality level.
