Abstract

The definition of sacred in the World Religions paradigm is limited to the things that have to do with the symbolization of spirituality. Oftentimes, the sacred value which is not in accordance with the characteristics required by the World Religions paradigm is considered as something non-religious. In terms of preserving nature, based on the findings, many scholars have proven that indigenous people have their own value in interpreting the sacred. By attaching the sacred word to the realm where they live, it is not merely a matter of ownership or a place where they practice religious rituals. The Sunda Wiwitan community in Kuningan is one model that still carries out the tradition of ancestral heritage which they apply to the ecological aspect by the forest zoning and having a special place, namely Leuweung Leutik, a sacred little forest which for them is not only a place to perform rituals, but also as a means of preserving nature. Through the paradigm of Indigenous Religions, in which indigenous people have a strong connection with nature and recognize the subjectivity of nature as coequal living things, they are able to treat nature as they benefit from nature. This paper examines how the paradigm of Indigenous Religion is able to give new meaning to what is the sacred, which in this regard they apply to customary forest management. With a qualitative research approach using mixed data collections: secondary data and in-depth interviews, this paper explains new ideas obtained from the local knowledge of the Sunda Wiwitan community in Kuningan in order to protect their sacred place.

Abstract

Religious diversity in a country is prone to tensions between groups, especially if there is a very wide disparity between the minority and the majority. Domination by the majority over the minority may lead into discrimination and intolerance. This paper describes how the Islamic discourses of the Muslim majority in Indonesia, represented by Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah as the largest Islamic mass organizations in Indonesia, perceive the Shia community. This paper utilizes the concept of communal tolerance developed by Jeremy Menchik to analyze how intolerance is still inherent in amongst the majority groups. Through a descriptive method, this paper refers to many relevant literature reviewed with an intra-religious dialogue approach. Considering the importance of intra-Muslim dialogue as part of attempts to redefine tolerance, discriminatory actions should be no longer experienced by minority groups.

Abstract

The pervasive internalization of patriarchal norms within Indonesian society perpetuates the victimization of women, particularly evident in cases of intimate partner violence. This study examines the escalating instances of violence against women within personal relationships, be it in marital or dating contexts. Despite the increasing prevalence of such incidents, the measures employed to address and safeguard victims remain inadequate. This paper employs an explanatory analysis method, focusing on two case studies of intimate partner violence (IPV) in both dating and domestic contexts. Utilizing a criminological framework, the analysis aims to scrutinize the pervasive injustice experienced by a significant portion of the female population. The selected case studies serve as illustrative examples to demonstrate the challenges inherent in the legal process, emphasizing the difficulty in access attributed to a law enforcement perspective that has yet to fully embrace a gender justice worldview. The findings of this study draw attention to the nuanced dynamics surrounding IPV in the legal domain. A crucial aspect highlighted is the need for a comprehensive understanding of these dynamics. The investigation extends to social reactions, with the virtual community, or "netizens," emerging as a significant influencer in shaping the trajectory of IPV cases. The collective voices of netizens are acknowledged for their potential impact on the handling of such cases. The discussion in this paper highlights the factor of injustice faced by the female victims of IPV which is a sociocultural factor specifically the perpetuation of the following: 1) gendered stereotype understanding, and 2) stigmatization and repeat victimization toward the victims. By amplifying the importance of equitable punishment for perpetrators of intimate partner violence, the collective online discourse has the potential to shape societal attitudes and contribute to a more just resolution of these cases. In conclusion, this paper underscores the necessity for transformative changes in legal structures and societal perspectives, as well as the urgency of online advocacy in addressing the persistent issue of IPV and its impact on women's pursuit of justice.

Abstract

The imposition of mandatory hijab in Indonesia is a growing concern that highlights tensions between religious expression and women’s rights. Despite Indonesia’s pluralistic ideas, the enforcement of hijab, for example in schools or public institutions, continues to affect women and girls, reflecting a broader struggle over religious authority and national identity. This study employs a qualitative approach through case studies of several incidents where women were compelled to wear the hijab. Data collection involved document analysis and media review to understand the socio-political and historical dynamics shaping hijab enforcement. Findings show that hijab enforcement persists in various public institutions, including schools, where women are pressured to conform to dress codes based on certain Islamic interpretations. This reflects the hegemonic entanglement of religion and politics in regulating women’s bodies. We identify diverse discourses within the Muslim community regarding the necessity of hijab, revealing internal contestation over religious interpretation. Moreover, the politicization of hijab is deeply rooted in Indonesia’s historical trajectory, including noninclusive education. These findings call for a critical repositioning of the hijab discourse in Indonesia, grounded in democratic values, gender equity, and religious inclusivity. __________The original draft of this article has been presented at the 23rd Annual International Conference on Islamic Studies (AICIS), February 1-4, 2024, at Universitas Islam Negeri Walisongo Semarang, Indonesia.

Abstract

Human trafficking (Tindak Pidana Perdagangan Orang—TPPO), which includes sexual exploitation, is a form of organized crime that is on the rise and has serious consequences, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women and children. This study aims to analyze sexual exploitation as the modus operandi in human trafficking and to assess the extent to which the fulfillment of victims’ rights has been implemented, with the focus of the study area at the Kebayoran Baru Police. The research method is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, and document studies. The findings indicate that economic factors are the primary motivator for victims to become involved in this crime, followed by inadequate parental supervision, a lack of active community involvement, and minimal intervention from law enforcement officers. In terms of fulfilling victims’ rights, the police have implemented protection and assistance measures in accordance with Law Number 21 of 2007 concerning the Eradication of Human Trafficking. However, actual implementation continues to face challenges with regard to institutional coordination and the long-term viability of victim protection.

Abstract

This study analyzes the phenomenon of judgmental attitudes among women in public spaces, particularly in women-only train carriages, through the perspective of radical feminism and the concept of internalized misogyny. Internalized misogyny is a form of internalization of sexist and discriminatory values against women that are accepted and carried out by women themselves without realizing it, as a result of the influence of patriarchal culture that has taken root in society. This judgmental attitude appears in the form of rivalry, mutual demeaning, and the tendency to compare oneself with other women to gain validation or feel superior. A case study conducted in a women-only train carriage shows that spaces that should be safe for women actually create new social dynamics, such as competition for facilities, conflicts between passengers, and the erosion of empathy and solidarity among women. These findings indicate that internalized misogyny exacerbates negative stereotypes against women and strengthens rivalries between them, thus creating an environment that does not support solidarity. For example, women tend to demean each other or feel threatened when they are in spaces that should be safe for them. This research highlights the importance of understanding the mechanisms of internalized misogyny and its impact on women's social interactions in public spaces, as this phenomenon hinders the creation of more equal and supportive relationships between women. A deeper understanding of these dynamics can facilitate women's empowerment and foster stronger solidarity within society. Therefore, it is crucial for women to dismantle their internalized patriarchal values to foster equality and support among women in public spaces.
