Abstract

This study focusses on the genealogy of the Forum Lingkar Pena and Komunitas Matapena movements, which have produced novel Islam remaja (Islamic youth novels) and novel pop pesantren (pesantren popular novels). Using Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, I analyze the field where Forum Lingkar Pena and Komunitas Matapena discourses are disseminated, particularly among Muslim youth in Indonesia and how Islamic popular culture is represented through these novels and the dynamic of youth Muslims’ community struggle for meaning in the Indonesian literary field in general. This research found that establishment of FLP and Komunitas Matapena can be described through three main ideas. Firstly, these communities encountered the massiveness of popular culture by offering a medium that supports identity formation for Muslim youth. Secondly, there is a link between the idealism promoted by Muslim organization movements and the establishment of FLP and Komunitas Matapena, and this link determines their forms and cultural products. Thirdly, they use popular culture, such as magazines and popular novels, as media to spread and preserve their idealism, targeting young people. Keyword: Islamic youth, FLP, habitus, popular culture, identity

Abstract

The development of Islamic print media that targets youth as readers has challenged pesantren for selecting appropriate reading materials for students according to its values and tradition. This paper aims to examine the dynamics life of pesantren as fortress for the defense of the Islamic community in dealing with influences coming from outside of pesantren. Analyzing the responses of young leaders of pesantren to print media (books, novels, and magazines) containing Islamic values and symbols, and targeting Muslim teenagers as their readers and consumers, with focusing on how these media might influence the establishment of the cultural identity of santri. My paper will answer two main questions: how do the young pesantren leaders respond on the emergence of many novels and magazines that come into the pesantren? What are the rules and regulations they introduce to preserve the cultural identity of santri? In dealing with the challenge of print media, most of the pesantren where these young pesantren leaders live have an exception regarding book materials as an attempt to form and protect the cultural identity of santri.

Abstract

Nikah-Kawin, a deeply rooted traditional marriage in West Java, has been passed down through generations in indigenous communities. This marriage differs from conventional marriage practices in several ways. In particular, women are given greater rights of choice, with some even taking on the responsibility of reciting the marriage vows. The article aimed to explore the gender-responsive construction in the nikah-kawin tradition of West Java communities through the concept of qiwamah. Using empirical legal research methods, this study utilizes primary data obtained from interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal a gender-responsive construction shaped by the principles of qiwamah embedded in the nikah-kawin tradition of West Java communities. Interestingly, this constructed gender dynamic contributes to the formation of an egalitarian household environment. The presence of traditional guidelines upheld by these communities underscores their commitment to respecting and valuing women within the societal framework. This exploration highlighted how the uniqueness of nikah-kawin not only endures but also fosters a balanced and egalitarian approach to household life.

Abstract

The representation of women in village governance, particularly in the Village Consultative Body (BPD), is mandated by Law Number 6 of 2014 concerning Villages. Fulfillment of this mandate becomes a subject of debate when the role is merely symbolic to meet the quota of women in village governance. In this context, the method employed is qualitative analysis, utilizing a socio-legal approach that highlights the complexity of social and legal dynamics influencing women's representation in the Village Consultative Body. The role of female representatives is crucial in enhancing the welfare of rural communities, simultaneously contributing to the realization of a corruption-free village. Additionally, they possess a unique closeness and empathy towards the issues faced by women in their villages, enabling them to gain the trust of the community. Residents of Kota Raja Village also perceive female candidates as being corruption-free and capable of fulfilling their duties and responsibilities, thereby earning trust from their respective neighborhood associations (RT - Rukun Tetangga). This situation is evident in the increased representation of women in the governance of Kota Raja Village, especially in the Village Consultative Body. In the newly elected Village Consultative Body for the period 2023-2029, 50% of its members are women, up from 44%. This figure demonstrates the positive perception of Kota Raja Village residents regarding the importance of women's representation in village governance. However, doubts persist regarding whether women's representation is merely symbolic and whether it reflects sincere efforts to empower women in village governance. Nonetheless, this raises further questions about the skills of female representation in addressing the complex issues faced by rural communities.and application within the framework of Indonesian law.

Abstract

Forced marriage practices have garnered significant attention from various international communities, including the community of female ulama in Indonesia. Despite being a relatively new presence, the community of female ulama affiliated with the Congress of Indonesian Female Ulama (KUPI) has taken a decisive stance against this practice, issuing a firm fatwa (Islamic legal opinion) that underscores its detrimental impact on women. This article addresses the primary question of why female ulama associated with KUPI redefine the concept of wilāyāt al-ijbār (compulsory guardianship) in marriage, departing from the prevailing opinion among traditional Islamic scholars. Through a combination of literature review and field research conducted over eight months, spanning from April to November 2022, this study reveals that KUPI interprets ijbār not as the paternal right to force a daughter into marriage, but rather as a form of guardianship that entails responsibility and nurturance towards their daughter. This fatwa framework is rooted in what is termed the ‘KUPI Trilogy’: ma‘rūf (good), mubādalah (reciprocity), and keadilan hakiki (substantive justice), which promote principles of equality and egalitarianism. By employing theological, sociological, and juridical arguments and emphasizing the experiences of female victims, KUPI contends that the concept of wilāyāt al-ijbār in fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) is not absolute, thereby prohibiting guardians from coercing or intimidating their daughters into marriage. This article argues that female ulama have boldly contested the authority of traditional ulama by reinterpreting the essence of ijbār in fiqh, while incorporating the lived experiences of female victims of forced marriage practices.

Abstract

In Indonesia, Islamic education is still mostly provided through pesantren, or Islamic training institutions. They have a close relationship with tarekat, as they have been successful in maintaining Islam as a personal and compassionate faith rather than a cold and formal doctrine. Pesantrens changed throughout the colonial era from being a largely educational institution to a political organization that backed the independence fight. This article's objective is to look at how pesantren changed from being just educational institutions to considerably assisting in the fight for liberation, as well as how they contributed to the battle against Dutch colonialism. Using academic writing on pesantren that examines their position throughout the colonial era, the content in this piece was found through library research. This article makes the case that Java's colonialera social, cultural, and political protest groups benefited greatly from the pesantren system. It also seeks to explain their founding, objectives, student demographics, and involvement during this time period.
