Abstract

This article discusses the quality of English translation of the course books of Physics, Economics, and History for Junior High School students in Indonesia. The research which becomes the base for the article is qualitative, conducted on five English version texts of bilingual books for Junior High School students in Indonesia. It selected one chapter of each book and analyzed the quality of its text structure as well as its text texture. The data were in the forms of discourse units and analyzed on the quality of the text structure and aspects of grammar quality such as the grammatical construction of the clauses and the lexical choices of the texts. In addition, it obtained data related to the readability of the texts from twenty students who were selected randomly. The results show that all of the English texts have good quality in their text structure. However, the grammar and choice of words show a number of weaknesses in each text. Text improvement should consider English grammatical rules and systems and Indonesian language interference for English grammatical constructions, word choice and technical terms.

Abstract

Most information about the Radya Pustaka Museum collection is often provided in the form of captions and storylines. Unfortunately, the Radya Pustaka Museum does not have a proper English version of the captions and storylines to display to its foreign visitors, who played a key role in providing them with important details of its masterpiece collection. In fact, the Radya Pustaka Museum has some captions written in peculiar English phrases that foreign visitors could hardly understand. The process of internationalization of the Radya Pustaka Museum through the availability of information in English is therefore critical. Also, the need to produce high-quality translations should be obvious to achieve optimum communication with tourists, particularly foreign visitors. Accordingly, a translation training and assistance program for the museum staff focuses on the errors that can be made in writing and translating museum storylines, and how they can be fixed is crucial to conduct.

Abstract

Pandemi COVID-19 membuat Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta tidak dapat memberikan layanan secara maksimal. Salah satu cara mengatasinya yaitu membuat museum virtual Radya Pustaka. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the Radya Pustaka Surakarta Museum unable to provide maximum service. One way to overcome this is to establish Radya Pustaka virtual museum. Virtual museums are different from physical (onsite) museums. Descriptions of virtual museum collections have a format unlike descriptions of physical museum collections. The staff of the museum have the knowledge and skills to produce descriptions of physical museum collections but do not yet have the ability to produce descriptions of virtual museum collections. Descriptions of virtual museum collections also need to meet international standards and be made in Indonesian and English because virtual museums can be accessed from all over the world. As a solution to the problems identified, the English Department of Universitas Sebelas Maret Community Service Team conducted training for Radya Pustaka Surakarta Museum staff so they are able to produce descriptions of museum collections which meet international standards and update them regularly. This activity was carried out through the stages of briefing and training. In general, the training showed positive results in the form of the staff’s success in acquiring knowledge and skills in producing descriptions of virtual museum collections. The benefits of community service activities carried out can be obtained by the Radya Pustaka Museum Surakarta, especially the staff. Thus, the training on writing descriptions of virtual museum collections that has been carried out has achieved its objective.

Abstract

The presence of social media appears to be the hardest to restrain people from posting captions, sharing photos and videos, or merely leaving comments. Throughout the time of the presidential election, the Indonesian social media were embroidered with the dispute between Jokowi’s and Prabowo‘s influencers. This ‘battle’ reached its climax when Joko Widodo was announced to be the winner. The netizens’ comments on the announcement of the Indonesian presidential election posted on the lambe_turah Instagram page are the center of attention of this study. Due to the great amount of the comments, the data were randomly limited to the first 100 comments involving both allies. Since most prior researches were conducted with a psychological approach, this article endeavors to see people's identity from a linguistics viewpoint. The Appraisal framework was applied to classify the data. The results of the study divulge the social identity between the two parties. Jokowi’s followers were likely to deliver their satisfaction by deriding their opponents. These findings are reinforced with the linguistic evidence revealing the upmost presence of Judgement over Affect and Appreciation; both negative and positive. Likewise, Prabowo’s influencers also declared their disaffection and distrust by scoffing KPU and their contenders. Their Attitudes are negatively conveyed for the most part. In conclusion, the netizens’ written remarks left on lambe_turah Instagram post are assessed containing Attitudes, in which the writers tend to show negative Attitudes to the group they do not belong, no matter they win or lose.

Abstract

Children’s literature is crucial for the cognitive, emotional, and social development of young readers. In line with the Agency for Language Development and Cultivation’s initiatives to translate children’s books, this study aims to identify which aspects of translation quality are most effectively maintained and how they impact target readers, particularly regarding engagement across various reading levels. This descriptive qualitative study employed a product-oriented approach with a multiple-case study design to evaluate different reading levels on the Penjaring website. A purposive sampling technique was utilized to select data sources relevant to the study’s objectives. Primary data, the original texts and their translations, were sourced from the StoryWeaver website and the Penjaring website respectively. Informants, including raters and children of various ages, assessed translation quality. The study followed four analytical stages: domain analysis, taxonomy analysis, componential analysis, and cultural-theme analysis. Results indicate that the translation attempts to maintain the three aspects. However, while translations emphasize accuracy and acceptability, readability is often compromised due to complex sentence structures and unfamiliar vocabulary. Although readability scores are generally high, young readers frequently struggle with comprehension. This underscores the need to achieve a better balance between fidelity to the source text and accessibility for young audiences.

Abstract

This qualitative study examines a key challenge in Audiovisual Translation (AVT): balancing technical constraints with the stylistic fidelity required to represent characters with distinctive communicative traits, focusing on Dr. Shaun Murphy, a character with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in The Good Doctor (2017). The study analyzes English source dialogues and their Indonesian subtitles across seasons 1–4, employing a descriptive qualitative method with a stylistic approach. The analysis identifies the types and functions of repetition, the translation techniques used, and subtitle quality based on accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Expert focus group discussions were conducted to validate the findings. Results show that deletion, reduction, and discursive creation frequently remove repetitions, reducing emotional nuance and weakening ASD-related speech features, thus diminishing character distinctiveness. Conversely, preserving repetitions maintains character integrity and enhances subtitle quality. Theoretically, this study contributes to AVT by highlighting the importance of stylistic fidelity in translating neurodivergent discourse and recognizing repetition as a marker of character identity. Practically, the findings underscore the need for preservation-oriented techniques to prevent character erasure and to support authentic representation of ASD characters.
