Abstract

Abstract

Most information about the Radya Pustaka Museum collection is often provided in the form of captions and storylines. Unfortunately, the Radya Pustaka Museum does not have a proper English version of the captions and storylines to display to its foreign visitors, who played a key role in providing them with important details of its masterpiece collection. In fact, the Radya Pustaka Museum has some captions written in peculiar English phrases that foreign visitors could hardly understand. The process of internationalization of the Radya Pustaka Museum through the availability of information in English is therefore critical. Also, the need to produce high-quality translations should be obvious to achieve optimum communication with tourists, particularly foreign visitors. Accordingly, a translation training and assistance program for the museum staff focuses on the errors that can be made in writing and translating museum storylines, and how they can be fixed is crucial to conduct.

Abstract

Abstract- This study aims to propose an improved trading environment for purchasing low material and alternatives to reform supply chain management among firms which are the parts manufacturers of nuclear industry. One of the means of construing experience is how elements of nuclear relations are constructed within linguistic constructions. Configurations of nuclear relation elements can be different from one language to another because of different grammar rules. As a particular construction is translated, the configurations may be retained or shifted. This study explores retention and shift of nuclear relation configurations as a result of translation and the effect on translation quality in a supply chain for language translation. Clauses and nominal groups in the original novel Percy Jackson portraying the main character’s character and their Indonesian translation are investigated to reveal how the nuclear relation configurations are retained or shifted in the target language. Further, the correspondence of shift and retention and the accuracy and acceptability of the translation is investigated. The results reveal that nuclear relation configuration does not have direct impact on the accuracy of the translation. The configuration tends to be closer to the acceptability of the translation. Nuclear relation configuration can be retained whenever grammar rules allow in translating from English to Indonesian and be reformulated in situations which require shifts.

Abstract

Background: Increasing tourists’ interest to visit museums can be accomplished through various promotional strategies. However, the Radya Pustaka Museum brochure falls short of successfully informing potential visitors about the museum's potency. Methodology: The brochure of Radya Pustaka Museum was first studied. Four locals were asked to review the brochure for naturalness and clarity. An open questionnaire was used, in which the respondents marked the expressions they perceived were unnatural or difficult to comprehend. In using content analysis, the primary data were gathered from the Indonesian descriptive texts in the brochure. Findings: Some of the information in the previous brochure of the Radya Pustaka museum was vague and confusing. Grammar mistakes, the frequent use of local cultural words, and overly complex sentences are all factors that contribute to this problem. To begin, all the grammatical errors and typos must be fixed. The museum's name should no longer be miswritten. Capitalization should also be considered when writing names and address forms. Additionally, each sentence must start with a subject. Conclusion: The proposed new concept brochure of the Radya Pustaka Museum in Surakarta is projected to increase the locals' interest in having a museum that they are eager to visit. The Appraisal theory was discovered to be useful in assisting the museum with these efforts because it is conceptually similar to rhetorical devices that effectively produce a promotional medium or message to engage the locals in embracing the museum. Originality: This study attempts to get the picture of the link between rhetorical strategies and Appraisal resources, as never been previously done, and make the best use of them to attract locals’ desire in visiting Radya Pustaka Museum. Due to the small number of studies looking into rhetorical tactics in brochures, this research also intends to fill the gap to shed more light on how the strategies can serve as valuable resources in making intended effects more impactful in communication using brochures.

Abstract

Pandemi COVID-19 membuat Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta tidak dapat memberikan layanan secara maksimal. Salah satu cara mengatasinya yaitu membuat museum virtual Radya Pustaka. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the Radya Pustaka Surakarta Museum unable to provide maximum service. One way to overcome this is to establish Radya Pustaka virtual museum. Virtual museums are different from physical (onsite) museums. Descriptions of virtual museum collections have a format unlike descriptions of physical museum collections. The staff of the museum have the knowledge and skills to produce descriptions of physical museum collections but do not yet have the ability to produce descriptions of virtual museum collections. Descriptions of virtual museum collections also need to meet international standards and be made in Indonesian and English because virtual museums can be accessed from all over the world. As a solution to the problems identified, the English Department of Universitas Sebelas Maret Community Service Team conducted training for Radya Pustaka Surakarta Museum staff so they are able to produce descriptions of museum collections which meet international standards and update them regularly. This activity was carried out through the stages of briefing and training. In general, the training showed positive results in the form of the staff’s success in acquiring knowledge and skills in producing descriptions of virtual museum collections. The benefits of community service activities carried out can be obtained by the Radya Pustaka Museum Surakarta, especially the staff. Thus, the training on writing descriptions of virtual museum collections that has been carried out has achieved its objective.

Abstract

Abstract. Due to inadequate labeling, a museum's fundamental objective may be compromised. Museum Radya Pustaka Surakarta's unappealing and grammatically improper labels prompted us to study foreign visitors' perceptions of the English version of the museum labels. An analysis of the translation was carried out to see whether the flavor and essence of the original captions were preserved, the translation was under relevant cultural standards, and it could be read fluently or non-intrusively. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. Its data consisted of linguistic data, collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. The data were analyzed descriptively to answer the research questions on the naturalness and comprehensibility of label translation within the readers’ perception.  It has been discovered that the local Javanese cultural terminology makes it more difficult for foreigners to comprehend the labels. In addition, the naturalness of the translation is hindered by grammatical faults such as a lack of text coherence and an inadequate sentence structure. Remarkably, improperly designed museum labels and defects in the source text have also been proven to produce barriers to effective communication in translation. These facts may be inconvenient and fail to serve people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Due to this circumstance, the Radya Pustaka Museum in Surakarta needs to ensure that both the Indonesian and English museum labels it provides are of adequate quality to benefit its potential foreign visitors. Keywords: comprehensibility; culture; labels; museum; naturalness; translationAbstrak.

Abstract

Establishing equivalence within bilingual texts means saying the same message in different ways. Among numerous theories and views about equivalence is the theory which perceives equivalence as natural or directional. Within the theory, natural equivalence and directional equivalence seem to be quite the opposite but they are in fact interlinked. Bilingual texts composing of Indonesian text and English text are examined to reveal how equivalence, viewed under the framework, works. The examination reveals that the correspondence between constituents of both texts shows the features of: natural equivalence, directional equivalence and non-equivalence. The examination also uncovers the features of both natural equivalence and directional equivalence identified in a single construction. From this study, a brief sketch is obtained that natural equivalence and directional equivalence are not two extremes in the axis of equivalence but both form a tendency in terms of equivalence.
