Abstract

The paper examines the phenomena of using code-mixing on TV program, particularly in the talk-show Bukan Empat Mata within a multilingual communities, such as Indonesia. It looks at the different languages used in spoken and written forms. The purposes of this paper are to elaborate the theory, factors, types and the using of code-mixing.   Key words: Code mixing

Abstract

Abstract This Study Deals with the Theme and Rheme of Main Character Script in Hachiko Movie. The Objective of the study are to find out the kinds of thematic progression that is used in Hachiko movie, to find out the kinds of Theme that is used in Hachiko movie, and to find out the dominant kinds of Theme that used in Hachiko movie. This study was conducted by using descriptive design (qualitative and quantitative method). The data were collected from the script movie of Hachiko the Dog Story. The data were analyzed by the Theme and Rheme. The findings found that there were two kinds of thematic progression those are used in Hachiko movie, they were 8 constant theme patterns and 4 linear theme patterns. There were 144 (37,01%) topical themes, 151 (38,81%) interpersonal themes and 94 (24,16%) textual themes. Unmarked theme 227 (61,51%) and marked theme 142 (38,48). Interpersonal theme dominated the Hachiko movie scripts which means that the theme was the assertive or confirmation of the previous theme, because theme of the sentence has relation with the previous sentence such as expected a response from addressee or provide speaker’s comment, assessment or attitude towards the message . Unmarked theme dominated the Hachiko movie scripts which mean that the speaker utter the most typical / usual text. In the utterance the speaker put the subject and finite in front of the sentence  as the main point of the text. Keywords : Movie script, Theme

Abstract

Abstract   The objectives of this research were to find out the types of processes, participants, and circumstances, the dominant types of processes, participants and circumstances, and the implication of the dominant process, participant and circumstance in Barrack Obama’s speeches. It was a descriptive quantitative design. The analysis was based on two speeches of Barrack Obama, they were Election Night Victory Speech (November 4th, 2008) in Grant Park, Chicago, Illionis and Obama Inaugural Address (January 20th, 2009) in Washington DC and there were 525 processes, 618 participants, and 204 circumstances in 525 clauses. The result showed the       most dominant process was Material process (54,6%), the most dominant of participant was Actor (31,1%), and the most dominant of circumstance was (46,1%). Material Process is the most dominant process because it indicates activities that happen in the outside world of human beings. Furthermore, the speeches of Barrack Obama told about many activities that can be done        to make America better. So, the physical or action verbs are mostly used as the representation of the physical experience of human beings. As the process controls the participant so the most dominant participant which appeared in the analysis was Actor. And the last, the most dominant   circumstance appeared in this analysis was Location. It was caused Obama mentioned more both place and time in his speeches as the implication of the most dominant process, participant, and circumstance.   Keywords: Speech; transitivity

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this research were to find out the two types of conversational implicature, namely: generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature and the dominant one used in Smart FM’s Radio talk shows. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. It took fifty eight conversations taken from Smart FM’s Radio talk shows which were on air from April 3rd until 24th 2012. The result of analyzing found two types of conversational implicature were used in the talk shows in Smart FM, they were: generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational implicature. The findings of data analysis showed that the total numbers of conversational implicature from the two types were: 25 (62,5%) generalized conversational implicature and 15 (37,5%) particularized conversational implicature. It means that generalized conversational implicature is the most dominant type of conversational implicature used in Smart FM’s Radio talk shows. It is 62,5%. Generalized conversational implicature is dominant because it indicates that when the interviewees answer the question, they usually used the clear answer to make their partner and listeners understand what he/she talked about. It can be concluded that the dominant conversational implicature that occured in the four editions of Smart FM’s Radio Talk Shows was Generalized Conversational Implicature. It shows that the interviewee gave a strong and clear implicit meaning. Keywords: Conversational Implicture, Talk Show

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with theme in “pepongoten” at Gayo wedding ceremony. The data were taken from informants and tape recorded of the Gayo wedding ceremony which was taken directly from SebukuInenMayak and Sebukuine in Pepongoten. Besides, some books of Gayowedding ceremony were used to complete the data. The method of the research was qualitative descriptive. It gives description about the theme used in Pepongotenat Gayowedding ceremony. The analysis of this research was data collection, data reduction, data display and at last data verification. The findings show that there were three types of theme used in Pepongoten, they are Textual, Topical, and Interpersonal. Those types of Theme and functions of theme reflected Gayonese cultural values namely politeness, respect to the elder, friendly and resoluteness value. These findings imply the importance of honoring parents in every aspect of life.     Keywords:theme used, Linguistics, Descriptive Qualitative Design

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the figures of speech in the lyrics of Rani Simbolon’s Toba Batak Pop Songs. The objectives of the study are to describe the types of figures of speech which are used in Rani Simbolon’s Toba Batak Pop Songs, to derive the figures of speech that used in Rani Simbolon’s Toba Batak Pop Songs, to reason the figures of speech as found in the Rani Simbolon’s Toba Batak songs. The research was conducted by descriptive qualitative. Thedata are the lyrics of Rani Simbolon’s Toba Batak Pop songs, the data were collected from 10 songs that has figures of speech.This data were analyzed by identifying and classifying the figures of speech displaying the result in a table. Then these figures of spech are described in details. The analysis found that there are four types of figures of speech which used; they are Hyperbole 48,2% , Personification 29,6 %, Simile 14,8 %,and Metaphor 7,4 %. The most frequent type of figures of speech used in the lyrics of Rani Simbolon’s Toba Batak Pop Songs isHyperbole. Keyword:Literature, Figures of speech, Song

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study deals with the types of maxims violation in Presidential Debate between President Obama and Republican Nominee Mitt Romney on October 3, 2012. The objectives of study are to describe the violated maxim, to derive the dominant violated maxim and to reason for the use of dominant violated maxims in presidential debate. The data is the transcript of the presidential debate and taken from the internet. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. It is found that there are 65 utterances violated by the candidates. The results of data analysis show the total numbers are: maxim violation of quantity (67.69%), quality (23.07%), relevance (6.16%), and manner (3.08%). The most dominant type of maxim violation is quantity because the candidates give the information as much as possible to clear up and ensure the listener(s) that one of them is the best choice to be the next American president.   Keyword        : Gricean Maxims, cooperative principle, violating maxims
