Abstract

Abstract

This activity aims to increase buffalo milk production by improving feed management through the application of science and technology will lead to an increase in the income of Murrah buffalo breeders. This program is conducted to the Kelok Rambai livestock Group, Kapau, Tilatang Kamang District, Agam Regency. This farmer group received assistance from the provincial government of West Sumatra, 15 Murrah buffaloes as milk producers, where the milk produced is fermented into curd. The pattern of maintenance is semi-intensive and the feed provided is inadequate both in quantity and quality and the lack of knowledge of farmers so that the productivity of buffaloes is still low. The method of activities carried out in this service is participatory community empowerment including counseling, training, guidance, discussion and evaluation/monitoring. The training/pilot of feed technology introduced is multi-nutrient feed supplement, namely Urea Saka Blok, and ammoniated rice straw as a quality fiber feed ingredient. In addition, the cultivation of legume feed is indigofera plants which can be used as green concentrate because high protein content. The results of using ammoniated rice straw supplemented with Urea Saka Blok in buffaloes increased feed consumption significantly from an average of 2.5% to 2.75% of body weight or an increase of 0.25%. This increase in feed consumption has implications for milk production which was initially 2 liters per day, increased to 3 liters per day or an increase of about 50%, and what is quite interesting is that until the 10th month of lactation milk production is still 3 liters per day. It is hoped that the community service activities at the Kelok Rambai Cattle Farmer Group can increase the income of group members, apply good maintenance management, increase motivation, apply sustainable introduced feed technology and make Nagari Kapau as one of the centers for Murrah buffalo farming producing milk/curd. in West Sumatra.

Abstract

The community service program is conducted at the Kelok Rambai livestock Group, Kapau, Tilatang Kamang District, Agam Regency. the Kelok Rambai livestock Group is a group of livestock that raises Murrah buffalo but has not implemented good maintenance management. Maintenance management that has not been appropriately managed and farmers' lack of knowledge are the main obstacles faced at the service location. The productivity of Murrah buffalo is still very low. This service activity aims to improve maintenance management, improve the income of Murrah buffalo farmers with the application of good management, and the application of science and technology and research results to develop independent businesses. The method of activities carried out in this service is participatory community empowerment, including counseling, training/ pilots, guidance/ guidance, discussion/ consultation, and evaluation/monitoring. It is hoped that from community service activities to Kelok Rambai livestock Group, it can increase income for group members, implement good maintenance management, increase motivation, use appropriate technology and make Kapau one of the central Murrah buffalo farms producing milk and “dadih” in West Sumatra.

Abstract

Livestock health is a crucial aspect of farm management efforts. Managing livestock health should be a primary concern in order to reduce the risks of losses experienced by farmers due to animal diseases. Furthermore, managing livestock health can improve welfare, productivity, resource efficiency, and the sustainability of farming operations. This activity aims to provide knowledge about the health and management of beef cattle, as well as health services helpful in mitigating the impacts of animal diseases. This activity is carried out in the Rindang Alam area, Koto Lua Village, Pauh District, Padang City. The target audience is the Mak Uniang livestock group. This activity involves lecturers, technicians, and students from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Andalas University. The method used is Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), where partnering lecturers directly act as facilitators and can facilitate the community/partners in implementing activities. The participatory learning method is used to achieve the activity targets. The implementation producers of the activity use several PRA application techniques, including education, demonstration, and activity evaluation. The activity results show an increase in farmers' understanding of livestock health management, with a value reaching 90% (perfect). Meanwhile, the training activities conducted include providing vitamins, deworming drugs, and butoxy spraying. This activity has received a high response from the community and has even improved farmers' understanding. From this activity, it can be concluded that managing livestock health should be a primary concern to reduce the risks of losses experienced by farmers due to animal diseases. Furthermore, managing livestock health can improve welfare, productivity, resource efficiency, and the sustainability of farming operations.

Abstract

Although Avian Influenza (AI) has been widely reported as a strategic poultry disease in Indonesia, studies that specifically document AI occurrence based on molecular detection in traditionally raised Mojosari ducks remain relatively limited, particularly in major duck-producing areas in West Sumatra. This study aimed to analyze the occurrence of Avian Influenza in Mojosari ducks in Nagari Cupak, Gunung Talang Subdistrict, Solok Regency, as a basis for strengthening poultry disease control. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was employed, involving 50 Mojosari ducks purposively selected from smallholder farms. Data were obtained through laboratory examination using the Influenza A quantitative reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) method and were analyzed by calculating prevalence, 95% confidence intervals using the exact binomial method, and a proportion test to assess differences in infection occurrence. The results showed that 90.0% of ducks tested positive for Avian Influenza, with an estimated prevalence of 90.0% (95% CI: 78.2–97.4%), and the difference in proportions between positive and negative ducks was significant (p < 0.001). This high level of occurrence indicates active viral circulation associated with the characteristics of the aquatic agroecosystem, low biosecurity implementation, and traditional systems of duck husbandry and movement. The findings underscore the importance of strengthening laboratory-based surveillance, enhancing biosecurity in smallholder farms, and intensifying control of poultry movement, and they provide practical implications for stakeholders in AI control based on a One Health approach, while also opening opportunities for further studies on environmental and management-related risk factors in duck production.
