Abstract

This study aimed to identify the effect of flipped classroom strategy toward reading competence between students who are taught using flipped classroom and those who are taught using conventional strategy. The study employed quasi experimental and used Non-equivalent Control Group Design. There were 80 respondents of the 3rd semester nursing students of STIKES Bali recruited as the sample through purposive sampling strategy. The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test to measure students' reading competence. The findings indicated that there was a significant difference between experimental and conventional group. The average score of experimental group in pre-test was 49.05, while the post-test was 78.58; the increase was 29.53. Meanwhile, the average score of control group in the pre-test was 45.55, while after the post-test was 58.48; the increase was 12.93. The t test obtained the value of t count 12.737. The value of t table with df 39 at a significant level of 5% was 2.0226. Therefore, t count> t table (12,737> 2,0226) and the significance value is lower than 0,05 (0,00 <0,05). The students taught using Flipped Classroom achieved better in reading competency than those who were taught using conventional teaching. In conclusion, Flipped Classroom is an active learning strategy that can be applied in the classroom, in which the learning process is reversed, that is, from the student to the teacher or student-centered learning.

Abstract

This study explores the correlation of learners’ attitude towards their English teachers and their motivation and achievement in English class. Two questionnaires on attitude and motivation used in this study were adapted from the Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) developed by Gardner (1985). These questionnaires were then developed using web-based survey and distributed online to 82 Indonesian students. The quantification of data shows that attitude and motivation are moderately correlated at a value of r = 0.569, p < 0.01, whilst the correlation value between motivation and students’ final score is at r = 0.30, p

Abstract

Language in the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is learnt to equip the learners for entry into a more specific linguistic environment, thus the most prominent feature in ESP course design is that the syllabus is based on an analysis of the students’ needs (Basturkmen 2006). The aims of this study are to explore the needs of nursing students, faculty members in the nursing department and professional nurses to design an ESP syllabus for Indonesian nursing students; also to discuss the implications for EFL teachers who teach English for Nurses. The needs analysis were conducted by distributing questionnaires to and interviewing the respondents. The answers from the respondents were analyzed based on comprehensive concept of need analysis proposed by Dudley-Evans and St. John. The findings showed that most students consider themselves as poor in vocabulary and weak in speaking, listening, writing and pronunciation. Hence, it is crucial to improve their skills to enable them communicating effectively with foreign patients and avoiding misunderstanding which may happen when interacting with foreign patients. The innovative ESP syllabus for Indonesian nurses was then developed based on these findings and the theory of material development proposed by Harding.

Abstract

The fact that language changes is indisputable and inevitable. The nature of language that is very dynamic - following the development of the society leads to the emergence of linguistics variation. Linguistics variation is believed to rely heavily on people’s live and interactions. Hudson states (1981: 25) “the defining characteristic of each variety is the relevant relation to society – in other words, by whom, and when, the items concerned are used”. The present study examines the differences in variations of the language used by the people in a particular group – the forms, meaning and function of English jargons used by University students competing in English parliamentary debating competitions held in the region Bali, West and East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Jargon is a collection of words or specific terms used by a group of people, in which the words are only understood by those who joined the group (Fromkin and Rodman, 1979). The data were collected by recording the speech delivered by debaters during debating at the tournaments and interviewing the debaters to clarify the meaning and function of jargons used. The data will then be analyzed descriptively based on sociolinguistics and language variations theories, also previous related studies. This research is beneficial to increase scientific vocabularies and can be used as references for English teachers or English debate coaches to develop their students’ skills in using English and/or to improve students’ achievement in the field of English debating.

Abstract

ESP is a language teaching approach that targets the current and future academic or work needs of students, focusing on language, skills, discourse, and genres needed to meet the needs through specific teaching and learning methodologies (Anthony, 2015). Thus, the most prominent feature in the design of ESP course is the syllabus based on the students' needs analysis (Basturkmen, 2010). This study aimed to find out the needs of students and lecturers in the Diploma IV of Nursing Anesthesiology also nurse anesthetists in hospitals to design the ESP syllabus for students of Nursing Anesthesiology course in Indonesia. The needs analysis was conducted by distributing a set of questionnaires to all participants. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and further analyzed based on the comprehensive concept of needs analysis by (Dudley-Evans, T., & St John, 1998). The results revealed that the skills most needed in the target career are speaking and listening. In addition, all the twenty-four topics listed in the questionnaire were regarded as important, including some materials on cultural topics. Based on these findings, it is necessary to develop the ESP course for Indonesian nurse anesthetists with the integration of some cultural materials to help the students developing their communication skills to achieve effective cross-cultural communication in their current academic and future career as nurse anesthetists. English educators teaching this ESP course are recommended to have a fair knowledge about nurse anesthetist and anesthesia-related topics and implement a suitable teaching method emphasizing on teaching effective cross-cultural communication. HIGHLIGHTS: English was used significantly by the nurse anesthetists both in their academic and professional life, particularly spoken English. Along with speaking skills, a good listening skill is also vital, because effective communication between nurse anesthetist and patient requires not only the ability to speak but also to listen and comprehend the utterances spoken. Cultural topics and social skill merit to be included in the syllabus and exercised thoroughly in the learning activities to develop the learners’ communication skills to achieve interaction among cultures. Culturally competent nurse anesthetists will have the influence to improve the quality of anesthesia care leading to better health outcomes for culturally diverse patients.

Abstract

English language learning in vocational schools aims to provide students with language skills that can maximally support the competence of the specific field of expertise that students have. However, English teaching in many vocational schools, such as the Bali Medika Health Vocational School, is not designed as English for Specific Purposes (ESP), thus found to be insufficient to equip students to communicate using English in their target career. In addition, the teachers at this school revealed that it is difficult to find the kind of activities that can be organized to make learning English interesting and to choose material that is suitable to the needs of students as a future nurse assistant. Therefore, an innovative learning activity is needed to assist teachers in delivering teaching material that is suitable and relevant to the student’s target career. Learning through games such as word grouping and whispering was organized in the class to teach students the specialized nursing vocabulary. At the evaluation, students reported that learning nursing vocabulary through word-grouping and whispering activities was fun, and they could understand the material well. The learning activities helped them enrich their nursing vocabularies and they were very satisfied with the English learning in this program. Keywords: ESP, games, nursing vocabulary, word-grouping, whispering.

Abstract

The development of effective and efficient learning media is very important and needed in the teaching and learning process in the current era of independent learning. This study aims to develop a patient assessment e-module to help students using Canva. This study applied the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation on the product being developed. The feasibility test of the e-module with the results of the feasibility test of 86% language experts, 85% material experts and 86% media experts with an average feasibility test of 86.3% which results are included in the very feasible category. Furthermore, the results of the product test on 84 respondents students showed that 71 respondents (85%) stated very good, 11 respondents (13%) stated good, and 2 respondents (2%) stated sufficient. Based on the results of the study, it can be stated that the e-module product developed is included in the very feasible category and received a very good response from respondents because it is considered very helpful in the learning process effectively and efficiently to understand patient assessment material.
