Abstract

The phenomenon of violence in the formation of nation-states in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially during the era of nationalism, had significant impacts on many countries, including Indonesia. This violence is linked to an official, exclusive, and elitist nationalism narrative, as seen in Aceh. The history of the "Cumbok Tragedy" in Aceh illustrates how nationalism can lead to violence. The impacts of conflict, such as in the Cumbok Tragedy, include infrastructure damage, security uncertainty, psychological effects, and social disruption. Development planning in East Aceh must consider rehabilitation, reintegration, and peace efforts to achieve effective and sustainable development. In the context of the Cumbok tragedy, the historical narrative that is written and often understood by the public originates from power and colonial control. Therefore, there is a need for a political movement to offer a new, more democratic, postcolonial meaning, bridging the sociocultural reconciliation movement. This research will be conducted in Aceh Regency, which is the epicenter of the conflict and the most distorted area in the history of the Cumbok Tragedy. A qualitative social approach with a case study method will be used to explore the real-life situation of the case. The research results on the Cumbok Tragedy in East Aceh reveal the complexity of history through in-depth narratives from the families of the victims, such as Teuku Saiful Anwar and Cut Anzar Hanum, who highlight the direct impacts and differing perspectives compared to the official historical version. The inaccuracies in the current historical writing have caused tensions, underscoring the importance of historical reconciliation. Experts, including Prof. Ismail Fahmi Arrauf Nasution, emphasize that honest and balanced disclosure, along with university involvement, is a crucial step to improving historical understanding and building sustainable peace in Aceh. Awareness of various perspectives and a commitment to reconciliation are key to healing past wounds and creating a more harmonious future.

Abstract

Biodiversity decline has significant implications for environmental sustainability, necessitating an integrated approach to environmental planning and management. Environmental degradation is closely linked to socio-economic conditions, particularly poverty and economic growth. In response to this issue, this research aims to analyze the development of coffee-based agroforestry systems in forest areas to optimize land use in Humbang Hasundutan Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. The research employs a quantitative approach, with coffee farmers practicing agroforestry in forest areas as the research population and sample. The findings indicate that a more suitable and sustainable agroforestry system for this region is the agrosilvopastoral model, which integrates trees, agricultural crops, and fodder grasses. This system is particularly effective in steep and very steep terrains with shallow and loose soil. Additionally, in basin areas near springs and rivers, agroaquaforestry or agroaquasilvicultural systems are recommended, incorporating agricultural crops, trees, fish ponds, and fodder grass to maintain environmental stability. The implications of this research suggest that implementing these agroforestry models can enhance land productivity, support farmers' economic sustainability, and contribute to environmental conservation in forest areas.

Abstract

Abstract

Sigarar Utang Arabica coffee is closely associated with the reputation of Lintong coffee and the territorial identity of Humbang Hasundutan, North Sumatra. Yet its sustainability cannot be defended through origin narratives alone, because the continuity of a local coffee variety depends on farmer incentives, institutional capacity, technical support, market differentiation, and multi-stakeholder coordination. This study analyses the determinants of stakeholder support for the sustainable development of Sigarar Utang as a place-based coffee identity. A quantitative explanatory design supported by field observation was applied to 100 stakeholders selected through stratified purposive sampling with quota allocation. The respondents comprised coffee business actors, coffee farmers, local government or village officials, and farmer-group or cooperative representatives. Data were collected using an 18-item five-point Likert questionnaire measuring regional identity, policy and local institutional support, perceived sustainability benefits, and stakeholder support. Validity testing, construct-level reliability testing, classical assumption tests, and multiple linear regression were performed. The model is statistically significant (F = 62.453; p < 0.001) and explains 66.1% of the variance in stakeholder support (R² = 0.661; adjusted R² = 0.651). Perceived sustainability benefits are the strongest predictor (β = 0.429), followed by policy and local institutional support (β = 0.301) and regional identity (β = 0.212). The findings indicate that stakeholder support is strongest when Sigarar Utang is framed not merely as a symbolic coffee variety, but as a farmer-centred, institutionally governed, and economically meaningful territorial asset. The article proposes a stakeholder-based conceptual sustainability model integrating identity continuity, farmer sustainability, adaptive variety management, institutional collaboration, functional-area planning, and territorial value-added development.

Abstract

Background: Public-sector audits are expected to strengthen accountability and fiscal management, but their relationship with regional development remains unclear, particularly when audit intensity is positioned as an intervening construct. This study examines whether perceived audit intensity mediates the associations between fiscal-economic conditions and regional development in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 539 officials purposively selected from 26 provincial, district, and municipal government entities. Data were collected using an 81-item five-point Likert questionnaire and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. Specific indirect effects were assessed using the delta method. Results: Economic growth was positively associated with regional development (β = 0.709, p < 0.001). Economic growth (β = 0.280, p = 0.001), local revenue (β = 0.294, p < 0.001), investment (β = 0.134, p = 0.036), and accountability and effectiveness (β = 0.562, p < 0.001) were positively associated with perceived audit intensity. Conversely, perceived audit intensity was negatively associated with regional development (β = −0.261, p = 0.008). Significant negative indirect associations were observed for economic growth, local revenue, and accountability and effectiveness, but not for investment. The model explained 71.4% of the variance in regional development. Conclusion: Perceived audit intensity did not constitute a positive pathway between fiscal-economic conditions and regional development. Its developmental value may depend on whether audit findings are translated into corrective action and integrated into planning and budgeting. Given the cross-sectional design, purposive sampling, and perceptual measures, the indirect effects represent concurrent statistical associations rather than causal mediation.
