Abstract

This research deals with the derivational process of English noun. It is one of the forming word processes. The writer focuses on derivational process of English noun which found in Newsweek’s Articles. The objectives of the study are to find out the derivational process of English noun included in Newsweek’s Articles, to show the derivational process of English noun contained in Newsweek’s Articles and to show the dominant of derivational process of English noun in Newsweek’s Articles. Specifically, this research tries to analyze derivational process of English noun which attach to the word that exist in Newsweek’s Articles. The derivational process of English noun can be attaches to the verb, adjective and noun. From the analysis, it is found that 69 derivational suffixes of English noun, and the dominant derivational process of English noun found in Newsweek’s Articles is suffix –tion with the percentage 17,39 % of all derivational process of English noun which had been found in Newsweek’s Articles. And followed by suffix –er or –or with 14,49 % and suffix –ity with 13,04 %.  This research made based on the library and other sources, as there are many available sources is collected to support this research.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research discusses the analysis of translation procedures in The Secret Life of Pets movie subtitle. This research aims to find out the types of translation procedures, to analyze how the translation procedures worked in the movie subtitle of The Secret Life of Pets movie, and to find out the dominant type of translation procedure in the movie subtitle. Qualitative research is applied in this research. The data of this research are words, phrases, and clauses that are taken from The Secret Life of Pets movie as the source of data. Vinay and Darbelnet (2000) theory is used in analyzing the types of translation procedures in this research. The results of this research are (1) there are 100 total data for the seven types of translation procedures by Vinay and Darbelnet, such as thirty for borrowing, twenty for calque, seventeen for literal translation, ten for transposition, ten for modulation, twelve for equivalence, and one for adaptation, (2) The dialogues are being translated to match the target audience's cultural and linguistic traditions while keeping It’s original meaning and tone, and (3) The dominant type of translation procedure that are found in the movie subtitle is borrowing Keywords: Translation, Translation Procedures, Movie, Subtitle

Abstract

Language style is a formal form of language that is used to communicate with others. The purpose of this research is to examine the language employed style used in the novel The Sea Speaks His Name. This Novel is a historical fiction authored by Leila S. Chudori and released in Jakarta in 2017. The data is taken from the novel The Sea Speaks His Name conversation text. A qualitative descriptive research design was used in this study. This analysis is based on Martin Joos' (1976) concept of five language style : frozen styles, formal styles, consultative styles, casual styles, and intimate styles. The results indicate there are thirty (30) data points from the film's conversations to conduct figurative language. The data analyzed shows that the novel has twenty-four cases of frozen (none), formal (one), consultative (seven cases), casual (eleven cases), and intimate (five cases) styles.. This means that the most common casual style is obviously used in family and close friend communication. Based on the findings of the study, students in the English Department should conduct additional analysis of the five language types employed in other materials such as films, books, or articles.

Abstract

The research objectives are (1) To find out the kinds of gender discrimination experienced by Jo March in the Little Women movie, and (2) To analyze how Jo March represents liberal feminism in the little women movie. The writer uses the dynamic structuralism theory by Mukarovsky. In conducting the study, the writer uses library research. The data in this study were taken from quotations such as dialogues, sentences and phrases in the movie script of Little Women as source of data. The results of the study showed that there are kinds of gender discrimination that occur in Little Women movie are discrimination in society, discrimination in education, discrimination in employement, discrimination in politics and depicting liberal feminism by facing the stereotype of women, she rejects the stereotype by proving that she can live well without marrying a rich man.

Abstract

This research looks into the different types of slang and the functions of the slang used in the Free Guy movie. The document analysis design was combined with descriptive qualitative research. In this study, the researcher applied Allan and Burridge (2006) theory to identify the types of slang and classify its functions. Technique of analyzing the data is by watching the movie and then transcribe the dialogue from movie. The data were taken from the texts and dialogues which contained slang words or phrases uttered by the characters of the Free Guy movie. According to the findings of this study, there were five types of slang used in the Free Guy movie. They were fresh and creative (48), flippant (15), imitative (12), acronym (4), and clipping (7). The type of fresh and creative dominates the slang words used in the Free Guy movie. Regarding slang's functions, this movie used slang in seven different ways. They were to address, to humiliate, to initiate relax conversation, to form intimate atmosphere, to express impression, to reveal anger and to show intimacy. In this movie, the function of slang that occurs most frequently is to initiate relax conversation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the semiotic meanings and to find out the types of gestures in the BTS Blood, Sweat, and Tears In theory, Roland Barthes discusses three semiotic meanings: denotative, connotative, and myth. This study uses qualitative methods to examine the substance of the meaning of the phenomenon. Researcher used books, theses, journals, and visual images taken from the BTS Blood, Sweat, and Tears music video as data sources to support analysis. The results of this study: there are 10 data where each data has one to four scenes. From the 10 data, there are types of gestures which include 6 data belonging to the illustrator gesture type, 2 data including the embellishment gesture type, and 2 data belonging to the illustrator gesture type. Of all the semiotics presented, the meaning of this music video is the story of resistance, denial, and eventually acceptance. Once cannot stand in the museum of their life forever and look longingly at the mementos of the past. The world is a place of complex relationships between light and dark, good and evil, virtuosity and sin. As we all cross the threshold of puberty we are faced with the choices that shape our lives. No one person is immune to the temptations of such a life and seeing it, understanding it for what it is, and making those choices is all we can do. No one remains untouched by the darkness.

Abstract

Penerjemahan bahasa asing banyak digunakan dalam perdagangan, pendidikan, teknologi, pariwisata, dan lain-lain. Penerjemahan tulisan dan lisan merupakan salah satu keterampilan berkomunikasi berbahasa yang sangat penting di dunia ini. Kemampuan tersebut sangat diperlukan untuk para remaja agar dapat bersaing di dunia internasional dan mendapat peluang kerja yang lebih baik lagi. Untuk itu diperlukan pelatihan untuk mereka. Sebagai solusinya, melalui program kemitraan masyarakat (PKM) ini, tim pelaksana memberikan pelatihan penerjemahan bagi remaja Desa Deli Tua Kecamatan Namorambe. Pelatihan keterampilan bahasa yang dibentuk melalui PKM ini dipandang sangat diperlukan dan bermanfaat bagi remaja sebagai bekal untuk melakukan penerjemahan nantinya. Hasil dari pelatihan ini berdampak positif terhadap kemampuan penerjemahan dari Bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia. Oleh sebab penilaian yang positif dari peserta, diharapkan pelatihan ini dapat dilaksanakan secara berkelanjutan dengan peningkatan kualitas yang lebih baik lagi kedepannya.

Abstract

Industri pariwisata di Indonesia, khususnya di kota Medan sudah mulai bangkit dan berangsur pulih setelah dilanda covid-19. Kunjungan wisatawan semakin ramai membuat objek wisata di kota Medan memberikan kontribusi bagi pemerintah kota Medan. Terjadinya lonjakan pengunjung disebabkan beberapa faktor diantaranya adalah adanya komunikasi atau bahasa informasi yang bersifat persuasif sehingga memberikan nilai positif dan dampak terhadap pertambahan jumlah pengunjung wisatawan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa besar pengaruh komunikasi persuasif dalam meningkatkan jumlah wisatawan pada objek wisata di Kota Medan, khususnya di Istana Maimun Medan. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kuantitatif. Teknik pengambilan sampel yang digunakan adalah sampling accidental. Sumber data primer penelitian ini yaitu diperoleh dengan cara menyebarkan quesioner kepada pengunjung objek wisata tersebut. Jenis skala yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan skala likert. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa komunikasi persuasif berpengaruh signifikan terhadap minat wisatawan. Besarnya kontribusi komunikasi persuasif dalam mempengaruhi minat wisatawan adalah sebesar 0,465. Artinya bahwa komunikasi persuasif sangat penting karena akan mampu meningkat jumlah wisatawan sebesar 46,50%.
