Abstract

This study aims to analyze the disparity between the number of job seekers and available job vacancies in Medan City during 2023–2024, a condition that reflects a significant imbalance in the local labor market. The background of this research arises from the persistent surplus of job seekers, coupled with the sharp decline in job openings that suggests the presence of structural unemployment and a mismatch between educational qualifications and labor market needs. Using a quantitative-descriptive approach through literature review and secondary data analysis from official labor statistics, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the labor market dynamics in Medan City. The findings show that in 2023, there were 4,661 registered job seekers compared to only 2,777 available vacancies, resulting in a surplus of 1,884 individuals. The situation worsened in 2024 as job vacancies dropped drastically to 1,016 positions, while the number of job seekers reached 2,293, leaving a surplus of 1,277 individuals. The study also reveals that job seekers are predominantly senior high school graduates, accounting for approximately 80 percent of the total, while job vacancies are concentrated in the manufacturing and trade sectors—both of which experienced severe contraction in 2024. These conditions reflect multidimensional mismatches in the labor market, including vertical and horizontal mismatches, as well as a structural shift towards a service-based economy that has not fully absorbed the workforce. The implications of this study highlight the urgency of strengthening vocational training programs, aligning educational curricula with industry needs, diversifying the local economy, and enhancing job seekers’ competencies to improve competitiveness in an increasingly challenging labor market.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development and trends in rice production in North Sumatra Province during the period 2020–2024 using a descriptive statistical approach. The data used is secondary data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in the form of rice production, harvest area, and productivity. The results of the analysis show that rice production fluctuated but tended to increase, with the highest production in 2024 at 2,204,875.51 tons and the lowest in 2021 at 2,004,142.51 tons. Trend analysis produced a positive slope value of 32,861 tons per year, indicating a long-term upward trend in production. The correlation between harvest area and production shows a strong positive relationship, where an increase in harvest area is consistently followed by an increase in production. Factors affecting production fluctuations include climate change, land area, cropping patterns, and agricultural infrastructure and policy support. Overall, the results of the study confirm that increases in rice production are highly dependent on land management, productivity, and the stability of climatic conditions in the North Sumatra region.

Abstract

Tourism development in Semangat Gunung Village has significantly influenced the community’s social structure and the sustainability of local wisdom. This study aims to analyze the impact of the growing accommodation sector and hot spring attractions on livelihoods, social stratification, and the preservation of cultural values. The research employed a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach using observations and interviews with tourism business actors and local residents. The findings reveal a shift in livelihoods from agriculture to tourism services, the emergence of new social groups, and increased interaction between locals and visitors. Despite these changes, several forms of local wisdom—such as mutual cooperation, traditional kerja tahun ceremonies, customary-based management of hot springs, and community security systems—remain preserved. However, tourism also presents challenges, including cultural commercialization, land disputes, rising individualism, and declining interest among youth in cultural traditions. These results highlight the need for collaboration among village authorities, customary institutions, and tourism stakeholders to ensure balanced tourism development that supports economic growth while preserving cultural identity.
