Abstract

Indonesian is a relatively particle-rich language used mostly in casual speech. However, the study on the pragmatic functions of the language is very few and indebted much solely to the works of Ikranagara (1975), Sari (2008), and of Wouk (1998 2001). The present study aims to need to extend other functions of the particle sih in particular providing wider range of pragmatic functions than the previous work did. The data of the stuy derived from YouTube videos of live Indonesian unscripted talk show; and thus the conversations occur naturally during the program. The results reveal that marking an interrogative statement with sih following WH-words implies that the speaker emphasizes his main inquiry (e.g. ‘where’ emphasizes location) and urges the recipient to answer appropriately. Further, the study extends Sari (2008) and Wouk’s (2006) findings that sih is not only used to emphasize the topic or main point of WH-interrogative statement, but also it applies to declarative statement.

Abstract

Discourse markers have been widely studied in various discourses such as political discourse, legal, media discourse, and even daily conversation. However, there is still a lack of discourse markers research in humor studies. This study was projected to identify the linguistic aspects of humor genre utterances in stand-up comedy performed by Trevor Noah as one of the most influential stand-up comedians. In addition, those linguistic aspect is discourse markers. The data were taken from Trevor Noah’s Video entitle "Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Royal Wedding" Live at the O2 London. Afterward, the data were analyzed by using the theoretical framework of discourse marker and its pragmatic functions introduced by Brinton (1996). This study reveals that there are several types of discourse markers used in stand-up comedy, such as “ah”, “and”, “like”, “oh”, “alright”, “then”, “huh”, “well”, “yes/no”, and “I know/knew”. In addition, all of those discourse markers have different functions, and sometimes one discourse marker serves more than one pragmatic functions.

Abstract

The integration between the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and the pragmatic aspect of the metaphor usage has resulted in the emergence of the Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) approach to examine metaphors in public discourse. By applying this approach, the present study explores the types of metaphors in Ustadz Hanan Attaki (henceforth UHA) and Ustadz Abdul Somad (Henceforth UAS) both English and Indonesian speech corpora on economic discourses and their possible latent ideologies. The results also indicate that some (linguistic) realizations of conceptual mappings of the metaphors in UHA and UAS’ corpus are used to evoke the emotion and the soul of their audiences. Further, the current study also shows that both UHA and UAS share similar collectivism/jama’ah ideological values manifested through the journey and battle metaphors dataset.

Abstract

This paper aims to demonstrate studies of pragmatic particles in Indonesian vernacular languages. Given the fact that Indonesia ranked second most populated language in the world after New Guinea, we would expect a huge number of studies discussing Indonesian local languages. Review to studies of pragmatic particles in Indonesian language is therefore considered salient to carry out to shed light on how different authors examine different particles, what kind of method they employ to describe meaning and functions, and what potential implication this study could contribute in this field. Besides, it also enriches the cross-linguistic study of pragmatic particles in general. Following Macaro et al’s. (2017) guideline of systematic review, this study employed linear process of procedure by deciding keywords, screening title, reviewing abstract, examining full text, and drawing conclusion. The corpus of pragmatic particles employed in reviewed studies ranges from colloquial, spoken, dialogue, and monologue data. Some approaches were used to reveal the pragmatic meanings, such as conversation analysis approach, pragmatics, morpho-syntactic, and even phonological approach. This discussion in the present paper may be fruitful for researchers who are working on pragmatic particles or vernacular languages and suggests that more studies in local languages should be outstripped to sustain national linguistic identity in the global arena.   AbstrakThis paper aims to demonstrate studies of pragmatic particles in Indonesian vernacular languages. Abstract

Abstract

This paper examines how the use of grammatical cohesion contributes to the coherent of the news discourse in The Jakarta Post reporting on the war between Russia and Ukraine. It identifies and analyzes grammatical cohesion, specifically reference, substitution, and ellipsis, which exist in the news text to bring coherence in the news text. The results revealed the most dominant type of references applied in the text were anaphoric references, and these references are very important to ensure the integrity and readability of the text. The study therefore reveals a lack of substitution because there is the need for precision in war reporting. The insights gained contribute to a deeper understanding of how linguistic devices are employed in the media to build cohesive and coherent narratives, offering valuable implications for both discourse analysis and English language education.

Abstract

This research analyzes the function and use of language in Linguistic Landscape signs at three train stations in Jakarta, namely Gambir station, Manggarai station, and Dukuh Atas BNI MRT station. This research examines how Linguistic Landscape signs affect passenger accessibility and comfort. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, and data is collected through field observations, photo documentation and passenger interviews. Then, the data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman (2019) technique, data reduction, data display, and verification. The results of this research show that most of the signs at the three stations are bilingual signs in Indonesian-English, followed by monolingual signs in English and Indonesian. The Linguistic Landscape signs at this station have proven effective in providing information that is easy to understand and easily accessible to local and foreign passengers. These signs also increase accessibility and comfort for passengers at the station. This research contributes to understanding the function and use of language in the Linguistic Landscape of public spaces, especially at train stations.
