Abstract

Background:Thermoplastic nylon is one of denture basic alternative made by resin polyamide because its high flexibility and good translutient, but hard to be smoothed and polished causing food waste accumulation and plaque formation. Clove flower extract proved as antiseptic used to be a denture cleanser material, but its contens of phenol essence can break the thermoplastic nylon chain. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of thermoplastic nylon immersion in various concentration: 0,8%, 1%, 1,2%, 1,4% and 1,6%, of clove flower extract to the modulus elasticity. Materials and Methods: This study was an laboratories experimental using post-test only control group design. The samples in 65 mm x 10 mm x 2,5 mm size were 30 samples. Those samples grouped into 6 groups immersed in aquadest and clove flower extract solution that is grouped based on the concentrations: 0,8%, 1%, 1,2%, 1,4% and 1,6% for 23 days. The modulus elasticity of thermoplastic nylon measured with Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Data was analysed using One Way Anova. Result and Conclusions: the conclusion of this study represented that thermoplastic nylon plates immersion in clove flower extract at the concentration 0,8%, 1%, 1,2%, 1,4% and 1,6% was affected the modulus elasticitys. The most effective clove extract concentration to be use as denture cleanser was 1,6% because it has the lowest increasing value of nylon thermoplastic modulus elasticity. Keyword: Clove flower extract, modulus elasticity, thermoplastic nylon.

Abstract

The heat cured acrylic resin is common used as denture base material, but its microporosity can affect the cleanliness of the denture base lead to accumulation of plaque and food waste, and further increase the number of Candida albicans and cause denture stomatitis. There are 2 type of cleaning agents; natural cleaning agents, such as basil and chemical cleaning agents, for example effervescent artificial cleaning tablets. This study compared the effectiveness of basil leaves squeeze and effervescent denture cleaning solutions in soaking heat cured acrylic resin plates on the growth of C. albicans. There were 24 of 10x10x1 mm acrylic resin plates divided into 6 treatment groups. The acrylic resin plate was soaked in the basil leaves squeeze and effervescent denture cleaning solutions. Measurement of C. albicans absorbance used a spectrophotometer, then calculated the total of C. albicans using the formula. Data was analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test. The analysis showed that there are significant differences on the growth inhibition of C. albicans between treatment groups (p <0.005). The effervescent denture cleansing solution has a better antifungal effectiveness than the basil leaves

Abstract

Background: A factor that should be considered in the use of irreversible hydrocolloid impression materials or alginate is cross-infection control, therefore the result of alginate impressing produce should be disinfected using a chemical or natural materials, such as sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) 1%, and bay leaf boiling water 100% before gypsum filling, but that procces can cause dimensional changes. Objective: The objective of this research is to determine the effect of the use of these materials with flushing and immersing method for dimensional stability of alginate impressing produce. Method: The type of this study is a laboratory experimental with post test only control group design. Total sample is 24 samples of alginate impressing produce were devided in to 6 groups: 2 control groups and 4 treatment groups using the flushing and immersing methods. Data were tabulated and analyzed with One Way Analiysis of variance (Anova) technique adjusted for multiple comparisons using LSD method was used for immersing method. Result and Conclusion: The result of the study shows that there is dimensional changes of the group by immersing method, but use flushing method do not have a significant effect on dimensional changes of alginate impressing produce. Keywords: irreversible hydrocolloid, bay leaf, sodium hypochlorite, dimensional stability

Abstract

Background: Insertion of removable partial dentures and full dentures will cause ecological changes in the oral cavity and facilitate accumulation of plaque on the denture. The accumulation of plaque on the denture base is affected by duration of using dentures, type denture base material and knowledge of denture hygiene maintenance that was obtained from dentist's instruction. Objective: The objective of this research is to determine the relation between knowledge of full denture maintenance toward denture hygiene post insertion. Method: The type of research is analytic observational study with cross sectional approach. Knowledge of full denture maintenance was measured using a questionnaire while, dentures hygiene was measured using Ausberger and Elahi methods. The collected data were tabulated and analyzed with Spearman Rank Correlation test. Result and Conclusion: The result is the value of p = 0.00 <α = 0.005, yielding a correlation coefficient between knowledge of full denture maintenance toward denture hygiene of -0.907. This coefficient value indicates that the direction of the negative correlation. Negative correlation means that the relations are inversely proportional, the higher level of knowledge about removable denture maintenance, then the lower hygiene scores of full dentures.   Keywords: full denture, denture hygiene, knowledge, denture plaque.

Abstract

The rough surface of a heat cured acrylic resin as a denture base can cause a pathogenic buildup of plaques and biofilms, so an effort to clean the denture base is needed. The available denture cleaning chemicals are proof of some disadvantages, so it is necessary to do research on alternative natural ingredients. Srikaya seed extract using ethanol 96% solvent has been shown to have antibacterial activity and with its various properties, so that it has the potential to become denture cleaning agents. Samples were made based on ADA No.17 specifications with 5 samples in each of the 6 treatment groups, sampling using Simple Random Sampling. Samples contaminated with S. mutans were soaked in srikaya seed extract 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, 0.5% NaOCl and sterile aquadest. There was a significant difference (p <0.05) in each treatment group. There is an influence of the difference in concentration of srikaya seed extract on the growth of S. mutans bacteria on a heat cured acrylic base. Keywords: heat cured acrylic resin, S.mutans, srikaya seed extract, absorbance
