Abstract

English is one of compulsory subjects that must be learned by students of elementary school to collage level. In fact, some students have difficulty in learning English. This study aims to describe the factors affect students’ difficulties in learning English. The subjects of the study were 30 students of the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education Study Program at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. This study applied a qualitative descriptive research with a questionnaire and observation instruments. The data analysis of this study used interview, observation, documentation and triangulation. The researchers found that there are two difficulties factors in learning English particularly internal factors and external factors, including 1) students’ low motivation; 2) lack of understanding of the importance in learning English (3) lack of opportunities to learn English (4) Lack of environment supports such as parents, friends, etc.Keywords: Learning difficulties, factors of difficulties in learning English

Abstract

Three years old children acquire language after their first language and it is influenced by two factors, namely physiological factors and psychological factors. Physiological factors include speech-producing organs such as mouth and brain function. Meanwhile, psychological factors include development cognitive of a child in the process of mastering his or her first language. This study was conducted to analyze the semantic analysis of language acquisition in 3 years old child. Specifically, it discussed about the errors of phonemes which were spoken by three years old child so that it can influence the meaning of the words  semantically. The results obtained indicated that language acquisition of child aged 3 years old was still in the process of development language that will become perfect as them get older. There are 14 words that were not appropriate semantically. Those words were often spoken by the child. The relation between semantics and language acquisition of 3 years old child were assessed still in the development stage according to her age.  Keywords: Language Acquisition; linguistics, Semantics; language development of three years old child

Abstract

Code mixing and code switching are sociolinguistics phenomenon that occur in a communication process and become trend of language style for Indonesian. Therefore, this research focuses on the realization of code mixing and code switching that emerges on Indonesia celebrities’ caption on Instagram. This research aims to find out analysis of code mixing and code switching realized by Indonesian celebrities on Instagram. Specifically, this research investigated kinds of code mixing and code switching, and the dominant kinds of code mixing and code switching realized by Indonesian celebrities on Instagram. To analyze the data, the researchers transcribed celebrities’ caption on Instagram that contain code mixing and code switching. This research was descriptive qualitative method and collecting the data by utilizing documentation method. This research employed content analysis that focused on analyzing the kinds of code mixing and code switching. The result after analyzing the data, there were 18 code switching and 13 code mixing. The Indonesian celebrities dominantly used external code switching and insertion code mixing on their caption in Instagram. Keywords: Code mixing, code switching, kinds of code mixing, kinds of code switching

Abstract

Language Acquisition (pemerolehan bahasa) pada manusia diawali dari anak-anak ketika belajar berbicara. Anak-anak yang mulai bisa mengucapkan bahasa seperti bahasa orang dewasa adalah anak pada periode lingusitik yaitu periode perkembangan bahasa anak usia 1 – 5 tahun. Secara khusus tujuan penelitian ini untuk menggambarkan language acquisition pada anak periode linguistik. Subjek penelitian adalah anak usia 3 tahun dan 5 tahun. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian mengacu kepada teori Miles and Huberman yaitu deskriptif kualitatif (qualitative descriptive research). Rencana kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam penelitian antara lain: (1) mengambil data pemerolehan bahasa dari anak periode lingusitik; (2) memperoleh data melalui proses observasi, interview dan dokumentasi; (3) mengolah dan menganalisis data berdasarkan teori perkembangan anak tentang tahap  pemerolehan bahasa anak periode linguistik faktor yang mempengaruhi pemerolehan bahasa. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, diketahui bahwa anak pada usia 3 tahun dan 5 tahun mengalami tahap perkembangan bahasa yaitu tahap tuturan dua kata, infleksi kata, kalimat tanya dan ingkar dan tahap konstruksi yang jarang dan kompleks. Faktor yang mempengaruhi pemerolehan bahasa anak usia 3 tahun dan 5 tahun adalah faktor keturunan meliputi faktor intelegensi dan kepribadian dan faktor latar belakang sosial mencakup hubungan keluarga, status sosial dan lingkungan sekitar.

Abstract

Learning style is the key to develop processes in working, learning at school, and interaction social with people. Each students has different learning style types and it influences students’ English linguistic intelligence forming. The aim of this study is to find out kinds of learning styles and the correlation to their linguistic intelligence at Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Binjai Kab. Langkat. This study was correlation research that used to know whether there was a correlation between learning styles and English linguistic intelligence at Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Binjai Kab. Langkat. This study was done by taking 50 respondents at Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Binjai Kab. Langkat that had English linguistic intelligence based on random sampling. The collecting of data in this study used questioner method. The technique of data analysis in this study used correlation product moment. The result of study showed that rhitung from correlation between learning styles (Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic) and English linguistic intelligence were bigger than rtabel (0.564, 0.656, 0.495) to N=50 by its sig 0% with the result that H0 was refused and Ha was accepted that had mean there was a significant correlation between learning styles and English linguistic intelligence at Eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Binjai Kab. Langkat. The result showed the students had varieties frequencies of English linguistic intelligence because it was appropriate by learning styles that they had. It can be concluded there is a correlation between learning styles and English linguistic intelligence at Eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Binjai Kab. Abstract

New technology advancements have frequently been credited as holding the potential to cause significant contributions to education. This study contributes to high-quality learning by putting students in real-world e-learning situations while still allowing them to use scientific techniques to complete their project assignments. The subjects of this study were 80 first-year undergraduate students enrolled in the Bahasa Inggris (English) course. The snowball method questionnaire was obtained, and questionnaires were distributed to the students’ WhatsApp groups by performing snowball operational. The Lectures combined virtual face-to-face video conferencing applications on e-learning. Kahoot is an add-on application used. In general, online learning has a positive effect on students’ learning success. However, there are still learning obstacles in academic performance in online learning. On the other hand, learning obstacles occur because of students' limitations in developing themselves or their mental readiness to learn. As a result, digital learning may blend real issues with theoretical concepts in the classroom without neglecting the learning objectives that have been set for student engagement.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the effectiveness of flashcard media in enriching student’s English vocabulary. The objective of the study referred to identify the effectiveness of flashcard media, and to evaluate flashcard media in enriching student English vocabulary. Descriptive qualitative was used as a research method. The data of this study was a result of questionnaire and interview, and the source of the data was taken from students at SMK Swasta Yapim Biru-Biru. The result of this study was that flashcard media were successfully effective in enriching students' vocabulary, and flashcard media must have more variety. For instance, the flashcard did not only show animal, school tool, and home furniture pictures; it could also show road signs, motorcycle and car spare parts, machine material, and computer material pictures, all of which were suitable for student vocational needs.Flashcard media must be appropriated to students’ needs. Its purpose, to make sure flashcard media was accepted and right on target.
