Abstract

The short story of The Circuit substantially carries on the American Dream from the immigrants’ expectations living in California. Their expectations rely on spirituality, wealthy, freedom, and other life necessity aspects. This research reviewsthe protagonist character as written in Francisco Jiménez’s The Circuit and applies for the content analysis method. Data collection primarily uses the short story of Jiménez’s The Circuit as part of the philology research.  Data analysis deals with the intrepretative approach by identifying and mapping the life of a migrant child in 1947 documented in The Circuit facts. The findings showed that the protagonist characters tightly correspond with the life of a-4-year-old Panchito, who is conditionally forced to work with his parents as the nomad fruit picker in the entirely ready-harvesting plantation areas of California Federal State with a very low wage granted and dwell in inappropriate housing. Panchito’s protagonist character addresses a positive and tough motivation in happening his dreams that trigger the expansive morality values toward life struggles. Keywords: mexican immigrants, life struggle, protagonist, Panchito

Abstract

As a learning media, scratch conditionally becomes a suitable learning animation for student of six to sixteen years old. This study aims to examine the role of media to enhance the tenth-graders’ understanding of the material that is being delivered by the English teacher, while presenting communication and collaboration between teacher - students and students - students are engaged in. Data collection used interview and scratch practices with an analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model to employ this study. The findings showed that scratch media was fun, enthusiastic, interactive, and effective for learning English. Scratch model enrolled modification in making quizzes with the learning materials, in which the learning activities connected with the content, characters, background, and grammar. Scratch modification had shown the suitability of images, expressions, gestures, and characters that could change and move, as well as the suitability of the material and background. Besides that, the teacher added various sounds or back sounds the tenth-graders made students more enthusiastic and interesting with the quizzes. The use of scratch modified the animation, the background, the back sound, and all the features, in which it has a positive influence on tenth-graders’ learning effectiveness, materials absorption, and interest.

The     instruments address students’    religiosity and character strengths, endorsing male (114 or 30.4%) and female (261 or 69.6%) students who lived in and outside the Klaten district. 313 or 83.5% of respondents were residing in Klaten district,  whereas the remainder of, 62  or  16.5%, were originally inhabited from outside Klaten. This study used a quantitative descriptive with 375 respondents. Data were collected from a Google form to facilitate respondents’ accessibility in filling out the questionnaire and analyzed by using multivariate assumption tests of normality, homogeneity, and covariance variance matrix. The results proved that the value of religiosity (F = 1.641; p = .000) and character strength (F = 1.683; p = .000) from the Levene’s test, whilst the homogeneity test of covariance showed 7.104; F = .771; p =.643. Students’ religiosity ranked in the medium category (67.2%) as well as students’ character strength  (66.4%).   These meant no significant differences in religiosity and character strength among gender-based students’ domiciles.

Abstract

This study aims at assessing the tenth-graders’ reading achievements at the Vocational High School whose organizationally affiliates with Muhammadiyah Islamic organization in Seyegan Sleman through the think-pair-share model. Thirty-six (n = 36) students of tenth-graders of the vocational high school participated as the respondents. Data collection used tenth-graders’ reading test and learning observation. Quantitative data were statistically analyzed by the SPSS program to gain the descriptive analyses of the test, while qualitative data analyzed by qualifying the observational-based session descriptively. The finding of the test also noted that the lowest score of reading gained 45.00 and the highest score was 100.00 through the analytic scoring assessment. Meanwhile, the mean was 78.89 and the standard deviation was 14.289 (n = 36). The overall achievement of reading was in good category with 25.0%, while the finding of the observation showed that the tenth graders were able to work with their friends in reading class by conducting the think-pair-share model.

Abstract

Classroom assessment enormously represents a teacher-feedback designed that collects on-going evidence of students’ learning experience and achievement. This study examined the effectiveness of classroom assessment with teacher feedback in promoting descriptive paragraph writing among tenth-grade vocational high school students in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Twenty-four students (n = 24) completed two descriptive paragraph writing tasks on family background themes over two sessions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, chi-square goodness-of-fit tests, and principal components analysis (PCA) for learning attitudes (honesty, collaboration, respectfulness, communication, social relationships). Results showed mean scores of 65.63 (SD = 6.63) for the first test and 68.17 (SD = 8.50) for the second test; neither met the teacher's minimum passing grade of 72.00. The difference between tests was not statistically significant. The PCA revealed a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value of .269, indicating poor factorability of learning attitude items. Bartlett's test of sphericity was significant (χ² = 23.249, df = 3, p = .046). The study concludes that while teacher feedback contributed to modest writing improvement, whilst the learning attitudes did not demonstrate coherent factorial structure since the small sample size (n = 24) is below PCA’s minimal recommendation and single-site design also limits generalizability.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how play-based learning influences young children's interest in learning English in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed involving first- to third-grade elementary school students enrolled in an English tutoring program. Data were collected through classroom video recordings of play-based English learning activities and analyzed thematically using four indicators of learning interest: focused attention, enthusiasm, active participation, and persistence. The findings revealed that play-based learning created a positive and enjoyable learning environment that enhanced students' interest in learning English. The analyzed classroom interactions showed that learners maintained greater attention, demonstrated higher enthusiasm, participated more actively in learning activities, and exhibited stronger persistence when completing English tasks through games and other interactive activities. These findings suggest that play-based learning is an effective instructional approach for fostering young learners' interest in English learning in EFL contexts. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on early childhood English language education by emphasizing the importance of integrating age-appropriate, child-centered, and interactive learning activities into English instruction to promote meaningful engagement and support effective language learning among young children.

Abstract

This research is proposed to evaluate an afterschool program called Reading Preparatory Class (RPC) for the ninth graders in order to prepare them to face the regional assessment called ASPD (Asesmen Standardisasi Pendidikan Daerah) with CIPP model. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach and employs interview, questionnaires and content analysis in data collection. The findings show that there are strengths and shortcomings in the context, input, process and product of the program. In the context, the program has met needs of the students and been part of curriculum development. In the input, the materials have reflected the blueprint of the assessment although the source, author, and time of writing or publishing in the texts should be inserted. In the process, some students were still confused in word derivation, grammar and connectors for micro skills and identifying main idea, literal and implied meaning for macro skills, still needed to practice skimming to get main idea and scanning to know inferred sentences. In the product, the students’ achievement was still low in average but higher than almost schools in the regency. It is concluded that CIPP model is a thorough approach to assess the program from the planning to the result.
