Abstract

This research aims to uncover the impact of disregarding the formulaic competence in designing electronic English textbooks for SMA students in Indonesia. This research belongs to qualitative content analysis one, conducted by using content analysis research method in Indonesia from 2018 to 2019. NVivo 12 Plus was applied to manage and analyze the data that had been stored in this qualitative research software. The data were obtained from three SMA English textbooks for SMA students nationwide as the data sources. The aforesaid textbooks are Bahasa Inggris X by Widiati, U. et al., Bahasa Inggris XI by Bashir, M.; and Bahasa Inggris XII by Widiati, U. et al., all of which were issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017 and 2018 respectively. One of the techniques applied to achieve the trustworthiness of this study was by using Kappa statistic reliability test in NVivo 12 Plus, the result of which gained the value of reliability agreement level of data > 0.75, which means that it was in excellent category. The research result demonstrated that the three chosen SMA English textbooks lacked the topics for the students to promote their formulaic competence. The impact of this point made the students unable to learn such formulaic-competence-related materials. This case would make them find it hard to improve their communicative competence and reading comprehension skill. Therefore, it is suggested that, for the future revised edition, the writers of the textbooks for SMA students all around Indonesia develop the content of the textbooks comprehensively including the materials for formulaic competence. Keywords: textbook, formulaic competence, communicative competence

Abstract

The study aims to determine the simple past tense learnability in reading for eighth-grade students. This study uses qualitative research methods. Data were collected through observation, interviews, document studies, and questionnaires. The analysis used is the analysis of the Miles and Huberman models. Observations were made to see how students produce simple past tense sentences directly without the reading text. The reading comprehension test is used to see how students produce the simple past tense with reference to the reading. Student errors during observation and when doing tests are used to see the learnability. Interviews and questionnaires were used as supporting data from the reading comprehension test results and observation. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that simple past tense learnability in reading for eighth graders is low. This can be seen from the errors made by students. Based on the observation, students make overgeneralized, global, and local errors. Most students make global errors and misinformation through the reading comprehension test. Reading only helps a little in understanding the sentence structure of the simple past tense. Students tend to imitate the sentences in the reading. However, when students produce sentences independently, they need help correctly using the simple past tense sentence structure.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze how far the English textbooks that were written based on the 2013 Curriculum for Senior High School (SMA) learners in Indonesia have developed grammar-related material for students to improve their grammatical competence for their needs in English communication. This research is a qualitative content analysis of the English textbooks for SMA students conducted in Yogyakarta Special Territory from July to December 2020. The data for this research were gathered from three English textbooks for SMA students: Bahasa Inggris X, Bahasa Ingris XI, and Bahasa Inggris XII. These three books were provided by the Government of Indonesia for SMA learners in Indonesia. The data obtained from these data sources were processed with NVivo R1 Software before being further analysed. Kappa Statistics reliability test was employed for the data reliability agreement level with the result of >0.75, categorized as excellent. The findings of this research reveal that the three selected English textbooks were not well developed in terms of grammar-oriented materials to promote their linguistic competence as one of the components in developing their English communicative competence. It is suggested that the grammatical-competence materials in the three textbooks are provided in a balanced way.
