Abstract

(Title: Coffee in a Number of Literary Reviews in Indonesian National Newspapers). This study attempts to (1) map the authors of literary work reviews published in the 2016-2018 national newspaper which raise coffee as their theme, and to (2) describe the readers' responses on the literary works. It is found that there are four reviews which examined some novels namely Ladu, Siti Kewe, Romansa Gayo dan Bordeaux, and a poem collection entitled Secangkir Kopi Sekanak. Reviews of these literary works were published in Republika, Media Indonesia, and Koran Tempo. The current study is a qualitative research using a literary reception approach. Readers' responses which were investigated in this study include literary work reviews. The result of this study is that the authors, who gave responses to the literary works, were literary enthusiasts and served as permanent writers in the aforementioned media (e.g.Nina Ch. in Republika, M-2 in Media Indonesia) or literary enthusiasts and worked as freelance writers (e.g. Chandra A., Ferdian Ananda Majni). Reviews in the newspaper were considered popular and oriented to providing information on newly-released books. This study also revealed that the readers' responses discuss coffee in relation to Gayo and Aceh, environmental issues, history, inner conflicts of the search for God, and the nature of coffee as a complement for solving life problems. Keywords: coffee, literary reviews, reception theory

Abstract

Within thirteenth-century Javanese tradition in Southeast Asia, women are frequently marginalized. Women who had significant influence were often omitted from historical records, such as Ken Dedes. Her tale is exclusively documented in the book of Pararaton. Dedes is seen as a significant woman who bore the ruling dynasty in Java. Modern Indonesian literature depict Dedes in different ways, offering varied interpretations of her character. This study seeks to analyze the intersectional identity of Ken Dedes in the novel Tutur Dedes: Doa Kutukan by Amalia Yunus (2022) because of the intricate nature of her identity. The data consist of narrative elements such as tale sequences, characters, settings, themes, and other literary devices sourced from data repositories relevant to the research issue. The data were collected using reading and note-taking methods. Additionally, it was qualitatively analyzed via the lens of Kimberle Crenshaw's (1989) intersectionality approach. The results indicate that Dedes is shaped by various intersecting identities: education for an educated identity, biological physique for beauty and sexuality, high social status for respectability and knowledge access, religion for personal integrity, gender for the role of a mother, and political position for influence and network power. Each component category interacts to shape, reinforce, and internalize Dedes' identity and self as an educated woman in the thirteenth century, who wields significant influence and can overcome the oppression she faces. This study emphasises the importance of viewing women's identities as a cohesive whole rather than in fragmented elements. Javanese women were well educated and engaged in many facets of society in the thirteenth century.

Abstract

The exploitation of nature has led to an ecological crisis that is not only a local threat but has expanded as a global catastrophe. Literature represents the degradation of nature as well as the power relations among the oligarchic networks operating around it to build ecological awareness for the community. This descriptive-qualitative research design aims to describe the form of ecological degradation and the role of oligarchic power networks that appear in Indonesian novels. The data sources were purposively selected from Indonesian novels with ecoliteracy insights, including Api Awan Asap by Korrie Layun Rampan (2015), Jemangilak Tak Pernah Menangis by Martin Aleida (2004), and Kelomang by Qizink La Aziva (2016). In addition, data sources related to nature and the environment depicted in the three novels were also used. The data were obtained using reading and note-taking techniques. Furthermore, it was analyzed qualitatively using the perspective of literary ecology through categorization, tabulation, and inference. The results of this study concluded that (1) the forms of ecological damage presented in Indonesian novels are (a) river sedimentation and pollution, (b) coastal abrasion, and (c) forest fires. (2) Forms of natural damage occur due to exploitation actions carried out by oligarchic networks supported by government regulations and licenses. The study of ecological literary works builds awareness of the process of ecological degradation and the perpetrators of destruction that form a systemic network.
