Abstract

This research aimed to explain the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with main ideas and sequence details and interpretive comprehension dealing with prediction outcomes and conclusion. To explain the improvement, the researcher used a classroom action research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The location of this research was taken at the ninth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Mariso, Makassar with a number of the subject were 36 students. The research findings indicated that the implementation of Mood Understand Recall Digest Expand and Review (MURDER) Strategy was improved the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension and interpretive comprehension. It was proved by the mean score of cycle I was 64.31. It was classified as fair then improved to be 71.20. It was classified as fairly good in cycle II. They are higher than the mean score of diagnostic test 52.21 that classified as poor. Therefore there was improvement of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with main ideas and sequence of details and interpretive comprehension dealing with prediction of outcomes and conclusion.

Abstract

 This research aimed to improve the students’ motivation by using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) Method in teaching English at the Third Semester of Dental Nurse Department Poltekkes Kemenkes Makassar. The teaching material was English for Specific Purposes and the subjects of the research consisted of two classes, they were class A as a control class and class B as an experimental class. This research used quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group design.  The research indicated significant increasing of the students’ English learning motivation by using Communicative Language Teaching method for experimental class than applying Grammar Translation Method in control class.  The score of Intrinsic, Integrative and Instrumental motivation, indicated it. The mean scores of students before treatment was 47.05 and after treatment was 81.78 in experimental, while in control class mean scores of students was 51.16 and after treatment was 51.89. The results of the research showed that Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) was effectively improving the students’ English Learning Motivation than using Grammar Translation Method (GTM). The table shows the different students’ mean score for both two Classes. For Experimental class, the students’ mean score improved significantly from 47.05 with standard deviation 7.491 to 81.78 with standard deviation 6.386. For Control class, the mean score of the students increase from 51.16, standard deviation 10.602 to 51.89, standard deviation 10.671.

Abstract

This research was aimed to know the effect of using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) on the students’ achievement of writing skills.This research implemented the design of quasi-experimental which consisited of two classes of the same level. This research applied total sampling technique, because therewere just two classes of the seventh grade, namely: VII A as the sample of experimental group and VII B as the control group. The total numbers of the sample was 25 students for each group. the data were analyzed quantitatively. The results of statistical analysis showed that the mean score of students' posts in the experimental group was 88.20 which was categorized as “Very Good” while the average post-score of students in the control group was 81.20 which was categorized as “Good”. This shows that after being given treatment, the average value of the experimental group is higher in the control group. It proves that the treatment by applying PWIM can give effect to improve the students’ writing achievement. It was also indicated that t-value (2.78) t-table (1.68), with df. 48, Sig. (2 tailed) and the level of significance was 0.05 which was smaller than t-value (0.008 0.05).This means that there was a significant difference of students’ writing achievement between experimental class and control class after being treated by using PWIM

Abstract

This research aimed to find out teaching strategies used by the lecturers and the Students’ Response to the teaching strategies used by the lecturers in English Speaking Class. This research used a quantitative method. The population of this research was the third-semester students while the sample was 60 students from that population that was taken selectively. The instruments of this research were observation and questionnaire. The first lecturer used telling the story and oral interview while the second lecturer used to role-play and oral interview. Students’ response in the first class for telling story strategy strongly agreed 22.50 %, agree 50.42 %, neutral 24.58 %, disagree 2.08 %, strongly disagree 0.42 %. Therefore, the score range was 3.93. While for oral interview strategy were strongly agree 24.29 %, agree 47.62 %, neutral 26.19 %, disagree 1.90 %, strongly disagree 0 %. Therefore, the score range was 3.94. Students’ response in the second class for role-play were strongly agree 9.58 %, agree 45.83 %, neutral 24.17 %, disagree 14.17 %, strongly disagree 6.25 %. Therefore, the score range was 3.38. While for oral interview strategy were strongly agree 12.38 %, agree 38.57 %, neutral 33.81 %, disagree 8.10 %, strongly disagree 7.14 %. Therefore, the score range was 3.41.  The result showed feedback on in the first class, it has been proven that more attractive lecturers to students than the “storytelling” strategy on the first-class use the “oral interview” strategy. Whereas in the second class, it has been proven that lecturers use the “oral interview” strategy is more attractive to students than the "telling story" strategy on the Second class.

Abstract

The main problem in this study what are Teachers Pedagogic Competence in teaching English at SMAN 1 Sanggar in Bima. This study aims to determine the Teachers Pedagogic Competence in Teaching English at SMAN 1 Sanggar. The approach used in this research was descriptive research. Location of research at SMAN 1 Sanggar in Bima. This type of research was qualitative research, where  the process data collecting using observation and questionnaire. As for the analysis the author uses descriptive qualitative analysis techniques, namely written data, observations to the location of the location directly, so that in this case the researcher seeks to conduct research that is describing thoroughly about the actual situation. The subjects in this study were three English teachers at SMAN 1 Sanggar in Bima. From the results of the research that has been done, the writer can conclude that the teacher's Pedagogic competence in Teaching English has been done to the students quite well. The forms include: in terms of teachers understanding the characteristics of students it has been carried out using learning strategies, learning methods, and learning materials that are appropriate to the needs of students. For aspects of teachers understanding learning theory and learning principles that educate with effective and varied learning, for aspects of curriculum development carried out to design learning activities that fit the needs of students.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the students’ interest in learning English towards the use of Quipper School. In this study, 45-eighth-grade students from three classes at Lab SMP School Unismuh Makassar responded to 20-items of the questionnaire about the use of Quipper School in learning English. The data were then analyzed by means of a descriptive quantitative method followed by the random sampling technique to take the sample. The response of this questionnaire was concluded to answer the research question. The results show that most of the students were interested in Quipper School as a medium of learning English in the class. Some of the most appealing features of Quipper School encompassed self-evaluation, cognitive training, accessibility and updated material. These made them be comfortable with learning English which motivated them to study in order to enhance their English skill. Thus, the use of Quipper School was likely to be an effective medium of instruction, and English Teachers should consider incorporating its use in their classrooms. Eventually, it ensured that they would be prepared to communicate with English as a common language used in the globalization era.
