Abstract

Research on speaking anxiety has often been the focus of research in language learning to date. This research topic is important to provide information about the level of anxiety they experience when speaking English and to what extent it impacts the quality of students' speaking. Therefore, implementing research is important for developing strategies for learning English according to the habits and challenges they experience. This study examines students' anxiety levels, especially during public speaking. Data was collected using the Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale (PSCAS) questionnaire and then analyzed separately based on anxiety, communication apprehension, comfort in speaking English, and fear of negative evaluation. The results showed that 50% of students were at the medium level, 35% at the high level, and 15% at the low anxiety level. Anxiety arises from internal factors such as a tense and stiff body, a heart beating faster, and the inability to control body movements. External factors such as fear of being laughed at and getting a negative response from the public also cause anxiety. This study also found that the main causes of anxiety are lack of grammar knowledge, lack of vocabulary mastery, and failure to construct good sentences

Abstract

This research based on the students’ problem regarding to English teaching especially speaking ability. It was caused by the teaching method of the teacher in classroom was not interesting for students. The objective of the research was whether or not the use of Peer Instruction method was able to improve the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Watang Pulu. The research applied quasi-experimental design with two group namely experimental class and control class. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Watang Pulu in academic year 2016/2017. The sample was XI.IPA 1 as experimental class and XI.IPA 2 as control class. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ speaking ability improved, it was showed by the mean score of pre-test was 41.13 and the post-test was 57.65. It showed that the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Watang Pulu improved through Peer Instruction method. In conclusion, teaching speaking through Peer Instruction method was effective to improve the eleventh grade students’ speaking ability at SMA Negeri 1 Watang Pulu of academic year 2016/2017.

Abstract

This Google translation (GT) is one of main importance tool for students in assisting them in translating English words or sentences. Many researches have investigated its importance to aid students in learning, but still limit research focuses on how GT as English learning tool assist non-English department student. The current research tries to fill the gap by researching how Google translates support non-English department students in learning English viewed from students’ lens. This research used qualitative research, using case study. The participants of this research consist of 10 non-English students in Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. The researcher conducted interview via WhatsApp voice note to obtain the data from the participants. The data then analyzed using Miles & Huberman pattern. The result of this research showed that GR is a good application to support non-English students in learning English. It was found that the app become very helpful tool in learning English with variety features like, direct typing translates, camera translate, offline translate, voice translate, and easy to use tool to enrich English vocabulary, enrich English sentences, pronouncing appropriate English words. Beside many advantages, the result also showed that GT still has trouble in it like wrong translation in what the learner wanted to know the translation. Another result showed that to get better translation we need to use online GT especially in translate long sentence. It can be concluded that Google translating tool can be chosen as main supplementary learning tool particularly in learning English.
