Abstract

Politeness is a person's politeness in speaking, so that between the speaker and the listener do not feel threatened (offended) in politeness, there are two opinions namely the politeness strategy and the politeness principle. Both are the same, only differ in classifying. Politeness strategy consists of off record, on record,  negative politeness and positive politeness. The politeness principle, consist of the tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, sympathty maxim and agreement maxim. This study examined conversations between lecturers and students. The samples of this research were from screenshot of the teaching-learning conversation between lecturers and students via whatsapp. Collecting the data, analyzing and classifying were conducted word by word. The results of this study were students and lecturers often used language clearly and to the point, which is included on the record, namely using the sentence directly and also they used politeness priciple

Abstract

At present, the application of internet technology in the field of education is very much needed in order to improve the quality and equitable education services. One of them in improving the quality of education is from educators (teachers). The teacher has a very crucial role in the process of teaching and learning. Therefore, the teacher must be able to provide an appropriate method and method so that the classroom atmosphere in PBM becomes enjoyable. The specific purpose of this service is that they are able to understand and properly apply e-learning based learning media. The implementation is held for 2 (two) days, namely: first, the implementation of observation and the introduction process. Then the next day a workshop held on the application of e-learning based  learning media. The result of this dedication is that teachers can apply e-learning based learning models in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Bilingualism is used as a cover term for multilingualism, too – speaking more than two languages. Some researchers use the term plurilingualism for speaking more than two languages. few bilinguals are as proficient in any second language as they are in their first language. This research aims to determine the implication of bilingualism in EFL classroom. Descriptive qualitative is used as a research approach and its application uses phenomenology methods. The findings showed that the implication of bilingualism to students’ speaking. The implication is about interact and apply the lecturer’ utterance. It can be said this implication related to the students’ understanding of the word meaning in speaking. Second implication from the observation data is about students’ comprehension in a certain word, such as compounding. The lecturer used bilingualism to explain the meaning of the word. By using Bahasa, the students were easier to understand the lecturer statement. In this case, the students knew what the lecturer’ uttered and finally they could know the meaning of the word. Keywords: bilingualism; implication; EFL classroom; teaching and learning

Abstract

Abstract. For English learners, there are important aspects to consider such as vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar to master their speaking skills. Speaking is used to express people’s ideas and feelings in daily life or to communicate with others both personal talks and transactional conversation.  The objective of the study is to figure out how the students of SMKN 2 Bangkalan can use the six English tenses in daily conversation. The research was done within two weeks starting from 22th April to 06th May 2019. Observation and interview were performed to collect the data. Observation was made to see what was going on in the class, focusing on the students’ conversation. On the other hand, Interview was carried out to know the students’ problems in using the correct tenses in conversation, and to find out how the students solve the problems. The observation shows that in using the six English tenses, the students likely found it hard to apply the correct tenses in the conversation with their friends and the teacher. The students tended to use one tense in all situations and the tense mostly used was the simple present one. From the interview, it is found that the students do not really understand what tenses are, either the meaning or the uses.Keywords: daily conversation, tenses, observation, interview, contexts of situationAbstrak. Bagi pembelajar Bahasa Ingggris, terdapat aspek penting seperti kosakata, pengucapan dan tatabahasa yang harus diperhatikan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggrisnya. Kemampuan berbicara khususnya digunakan untuk menyampaikann semua yang ada dalam benak kita seperti misalnya ide dan perasaan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, baik itu berupa perkataan pribadi atau pun percakapan transaksional. Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana murid dapat menggunakan enam kala (tenses) dalam percakapan sehari-hari sesuai dengan kontek situasi, di SMKN 2 Bangkalan. Penelitian dilakukan selama 2 minggu dimulai tanggal 22 April s/d 06 Mei 2019. Penelitian dilakukan dengan 2 langkah seperti observasi dan wawancara. Observasi dilakukan untuk mengetahui yang terjadi dalam selama proses pembelajaran dan fokus pada cara murid bercakap. Wawancara dilakukan oleh peneliti untuk mengetahui permasalahan pada murid dalam menggunakan tenses yang benar dan bagaimana murid mengatasi masalah penggunaan kala yang benar tersebut. Dari hasil observasi dapat diketahui bahwa penggunaan enam kala dalam percakapan sehari-hari dari murid adalah buruk, mereka tidak bisa mengaplikasikan kala yang sesuai dalam percakapan, baik dengan teman dan guru. Mereka cenderung menggunakan satu kala dalam  percakapan dalam konteks situasi yang berbeda dan tense yang digunakan adalah Simple Present Tense.Kata kunci: percakapan, kala, observasi, wawancara, konteks situasi

Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze cohesion and coherence in students’ narrative texts using critical discourse analysis approach and to identify the implications of applying critical discourse analysis approach to students’ narrative writing. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The object of this research is 6 narrative texts written by 2nd semester students of English Education Department of STKIP PGRI Bangkalan. Data collection is done through observation, questionnaires, interviews and documentation. The findings show that the students applied their narrative text writing tasks with grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesive, and coherence. Related to student assignment texts, most of them are good at writing cohesion and coherence and some of them need to be improved. In terms of writing, they are good at the reference, conjunction and reiteration or repetition. From student writings, the researcher got349 reference words collected, and 26 words from substitution, no ellipsis at all, 112 conjunction words collected, and the last 69 words lexical cohesive. They need to learn more about ellipsis and collocation, they are good at reiteration or repetition. About coherence they are good. most sentences are coherence but there is some to learn about coherence. Then, the implications of the critical discourse analysis approach model of Norman Fairclough are also very effective in analyzing a discourse or text because it can identify the content and intent of students’ narrative texts through three stages, namely the description stage, the interpretation stage and the explanation stage.

Abstract

The society in using language is susceptible to any type of word including the expression of swear word. This research aims to determine of the types in swear word use based on the gender of its use in communication. Descriptive qualitative is used as a research approach and its application uses phenomenology methods. The data are from male and female students by matching them to Wardhaugh's and Jay's list of swear word. Students of elefth social three are selected for this research. Analysis of the results of gender-based reviews shows that men are stronger in the use of swear word forms. In contrast to women who are more aggressive and talk much only in their groups. Sex, death, excretion, bodily functions, religious matters, politics, mother-in-law, animals, nicknames are more widely used by men. For the types of rude comments women use more. This is indicated by their words and expressions that are more feminine and long-winded. Finally, the swear word which is included in this taboo word is used sometimes not the same for men and women.

Abstract

The aims of this research is to improve the students’ reading skill of the Tenth grade of SMAN 4 Bangkalan by using comic strips in webtoon application. This research is collaborative classroom action research. It aimed to discover and put into action various reading skills improving measures. The research procedure was an action research that consisted of four key phases: planning, implementing/ acting, observing, and reflecting. The researcher and teacher collaboratively recognized certain obstacles andweaknesses of the reading learning process, identified some problems, and planned and carried out the proposed actions. The result of the cycle shows that the implementation of comic strip improves the students’ reading skill, especially understanding the content of the text, vocabulary mastery, and motivation to read by providing the students kinds of reading activities. The success indicator of the implementation were that (1) the students were able to understand the content of the English text, by finding the main idea and specific information, (2) the students were more enthusiastic in doing reading activities, and (3) the students vocabulary mastery was improved. Furthermore, the findings were also supported by the means of the students’ reading score which improved from 62 in preliminary test to 76 in cycle test.
