Abstract

Discourse markers often occur in the process of communicatingusing speaking skills. In this case, between the speaker and the listenerwill always give a sign as the indicators which show that they canunderstand each other. They can follow the conversation or the lecturingprocess. Both parties use discourse markers as an indicator of interest andunderstanding of what is being discussed. In this study, the researcherdescribes the variation of discourse markers in form of three language;English, Indonesia and Madura. The researcher has conducted three timesobservation and taken documentation on Pesantren-Based English course.The term pesantren is described as an Islamic boarding house wherestudents immerse themselves in a learning environment with Islamicvalues. English-based Pesantren has been chosen because all of thestudents and the teachers must speak English although they are doing dailyactivities. The observations were conducted at three teachers or familiarlycalled ustad in the morning hours at 06.00-07.30 and evening at 21.0022.30.The final result states that three teachers have used three kinds oflanguages namely DMs in English are; About, ok, Now, If, there, please,well, really, right, mhmmmm, so and right. While DMs in the form ofIndonesian is: bisa, coba, ya, apa, jadi, tapi. DMs is also used in form ofMadurese language, namely: mon, deddih and apahjiah. The result showsthat DMs have two functions namely textual function and interpersonalfunction.

Abstract

Based on Qasim and Fadda study on 2013, the result showed that the use of technology, that was Podcast, is able to contribute positive effect toward the students’ listening skill. The researcher used true-experimental and applied simple random sampling for 66 students into two groups. The way of researcher applied that sampling technique is through students’ attendance list number (even and odd number). The odd number was formed to be a new group. The researcher decided the odd number group as control group and the rest (even number) was an experimental group by throwing the coin. They saved the record in MP3 and USB. They could listen and choose the channel and topic as they like. Their preference to choose the issue will be one of the motivations to use Podcast. And the following step was filling the listening log as the media to evaluate what have they listened. After getting treatment for 8 weeks, the posttest has been analyzed by using SPSS showed that was Ho has been rejected and H1 was accepted. In other words, there was a positive effect from Podcast toward student’s listening skill. The Student’s perception is also good toward the using of Podcast. It can be shown from the results of questionnaire that were given to the 1A (odd number) students.

Abstract

The top investments for all people around the world are improving and mastering speaking skills. The researcher tried to look at the implementation of TED Talks Video based learning on students’ speaking skill. In addition, this research is expected to be given as a reference, source of knowledge, theory for future and motivate readers to use TED Talks video implementation in teaching and learning. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The researcher wanted to explain about how are the implementation of TED Talks video based learning on students’ speaking skill and the students’ responses through the teaching and learning. The result showed that the students are interested because they can learn English with full of fun in speaking skill as well to increase their speaking skill itself, pronunciation, accent and all knowledge about speaking. Besides, they also feel motivated to join the teaching and learning using TED Talks video because there are lots of advantages, such as can learn about the body gesture while speaking and get lots of motivation and information from the TED Talks video. Finally, the students feel enjoy to retell or practice in speaking class.

Abstract

Batik is part of local wisdom that exists in the Madurese community and is an ancestral heritage that needs to be preserved. This preservation can be applied by linking the Batik philosophy to Cross Culture Understanding learning which emphasizes the background of certain motifs that describe the life of the Madurese community. Through the qualitative method, the author tries to explore the reflection of the philosophy of the Tanjung Bumi Batik Motif. The motifs and colors of Tanjung Bumi Batik tell some aspects of the life of the Madurese community and the symbols of the habits of the Madurese people in general. Linking the Philosophical Values of the Tanjung Bumi Batik Motif will add real insight into the life of the Madurese community. This can also motivate teachers to implement learning in lectures.

Abstract

The society in using language is susceptible to any type of word including the expression of swear word. This research aims to determine of the types in swear word use based on the gender of its use in communication. Descriptive qualitative is used as a research approach and its application uses phenomenology methods. The data are from male and female students by matching them to Wardhaugh's and Jay's list of swear word. Students of elefth social three are selected for this research. Analysis of the results of gender-based reviews shows that men are stronger in the use of swear word forms. In contrast to women who are more aggressive and talk much only in their groups. Sex, death, excretion, bodily functions, religious matters, politics, mother-in-law, animals, nicknames are more widely used by men. For the types of rude comments women use more. This is indicated by their words and expressions that are more feminine and long-winded. Finally, the swear word which is included in this taboo word is used sometimes not the same for men and women.

Abstract

Literasi dan numerasi menjadi hal yang sangat penting untuk ditingkatkan dalam konteks Pendidikan untuk mengasah dan menguatkan ketrampilan dan pengetahuan masyarakat sekolah dalam menginterpretasikan angka dan huruf. Tujuan dilakukannya kegiatan PKM ini adalah untuk membantu siswa memahami konsep literasi dan numerasi lebih baik. Kebanyakan siswa belum bisa membaca dan mengerjakan hitungan dengan baik dan benar. Maka dari itu, ini menjadi concern dan sangat penting sebagai latar belakang mengapa kegiatan ini dilakukan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan dalam kurun waktu mahasiswa terjun ke Desa dalam rangka pelaksanaan Kuliah Kerja Nyata Tematik (KKNT) selama kurang lebih 20 hari. Jumlah sasaran adalah siswa-siswi MI yang ada dilingkungan tempat tinggal mahasiswa selama KKNT. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah pembelajaran secara langsung dan juga memasukkan unsur sosialisasi dan juga pelatihan dan pembelajaran tentunya. Mahasiswa KKNT terdiri dari 7 (tujuh) program Studi yaitu Pendidikan Kewarganegaraan, Pendidikan Ekonomi, Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra, Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Pendidikan Matematika, Pendidikan Guru Sekolah Dasar, dan Pendidikan Olahraga. Hasil yang diperoleh dari kegiatan ini dibuktikan dengan anak-anak yang awalnya hanya mengetahui penjumlahan, bertambah keranah perkalian dan pembagian dengan cara lebih sederhana dan cepat serta dapat membaca dengan lebih baik

Abstract

The inductive-deductive learning model is a learning model begins by giving examples with the aim that students can identify, differentiate, then interpret, generalize and finally draw conclusions. The objective of this study is to know the students perception to the application of Deductive and Inductive learning in Basic Grammar. The method that writer use is a qualitative research. Subject of the research are students at second semester of English Department. The result of the study showed there are 4% (2 students) answer strongly disagree, 12% (4 students) disagree, 21% (7 students) agree, 29% (10 students) agree and like this statement, and 34% (11 students) strongly agree using deductive and inductive learning.

Abstract

Learners need to motivate themselves to be an autonomy learner. They must be active to find many efforts to increase their skill. In listening class, the lecturers need to stimulate the students’ ability in listening skill by applying a sequence questions in form of Listening Log. From the listening Log, it can be illustrated the students effort to listen many listening passage from many sources and places. They do not only study by depend on the teaching and learning in a classroom. Based on the listening log, it can be seen that most of the students were aware about their responsible toward listening skill.

Abstract

Using portfolio as a academic writing assessment has been applied in the last semester. For the following action this paper investigates the students opinions as their perceptions and reflections of the portfolios assessment that has been applied in academic writing I. The data have been obtained from semi-structured interviews with 10 students English Department who took Academic Writing I. The qualitative research design was administered to analyze the data by identifying and classifying the contents of student’ opinion and reflections toward portfolio assessment that has been implemented in Academic Writing I. The investigation found that most of students encouraged the implementation of portfolios assessment, the students cited that the portfolio gives a positive reward to the students’ writing. They felt portfolio assessment can build the objective assessment. Thus, it is recommend to keep using portfolios to assess the students’ composition. And also the improvement of portfolio is needed that is e-portfolios in academic writing assessment.

Abstract

Listening is one receptive skill which represents students’ ability in understanding a language. Nowadays, media have certain rule to influence this listening skill; e- radio (ABC Newsradio Australia) becomes one effective medium to increase students’ listening skill. This article aims to investigate the effect of e-radio on listening achievement of third semester students of English department at Islamic University of Malang. Pre-experimental research is used as the research design with the pre-test and post-test as the main instrument. The result of T-test showed that there is significant effect of the using e-radio on students’ listening achievement.
