Abstract

Islam is a religion that upholds the values of justice and equal rights between men and women, but the understanding of the Indonesian Muslim community is still wrong with the teachings of Islam. One of the reasons includes misunderstanding of misogynistic hadiths, namely hadiths that editorially seem to demean women. This study aims to explore Islamic feminists’ rejection of the textual understanding of misogynistic hadiths to uphold gender justice. This Islamic feminist stance needs to receive support so that gender justice is in line with Islamic law. This research uses empirical qualitative methods by analyzing the theory of understanding hadith and gender theory. The study obtained data from interviews and a literature review. The respondents interviewed were academics, NGO activists, and community leaders, while the literature included journal articles, books, and Islamic textbooks on Islamic law. The study took place in Makassar City, Indonesia from September 2022 to March 2023. Findings reveal that Islamic feminists in Makassar City criticize the textual interpretations of misogynistic hadiths as they demean women’s dignity and are not in accordance with the values of Islamic teachings. If analyzed from a gender perspective, Islamic feminists have played an important role in fighting for gender equality in a religious context. Meanwhile, in the context of hadith understanding theory, a contextual approach is needed to provide a comprehensive understanding of society so that gender justice is realized. The contribution of this study is that the Islamic feminist perspective that reviews misogynistic hadith through a contextual approach helps provide inspiration and direction for other efforts to encourage social change and gender justice.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of patience in the thought of Buya Hamka, focusing on the integration between the Qur’an and hadith in Tafsir Al-Azhar. As a central theme in Islam, patience is not only understood as a passive reaction to adversity but as an active attitude reflecting spiritual strength and depth of faith. This article identifies how Buya Hamka interprets patience through the bi al-ma’thūr method, using hadith as an explanatory tool to deepen the meaning of patience-related verses. With a qualitative analysis that emphasizes textual study, this article presents evidence that Buya Hamka relates patience to social and individual contexts and creates practical guidance for Muslims in facing the challenges of daily life. Through this approach, the author shows how patience can serve as a tool to achieve emotional balance and mental resilience. The contribution of this study lies in the emphasis on the relevance of Hamka’s tafsir in the modern context, as well as the functionalization of hadith in expressing the profound values of patience. By filling an existing academic gap, this research offers new insights into the relationship between historical Islamic texts and contemporary spiritual practices, making Tafsir Al-Azhar an essential resource in guiding Muslims to understand and apply patience in their lives.

Abstract

This study uses qualitative methods, combining textual and visual analyses, to investigate how Qur'anic verses are interpreted, manipulated, and circulated in frenzied cultural narratives on Instagram. This research focuses on the content of three Instagram accounts: @alqurancustomku, @lanternoflightofficial, and @ssheikh00, supported by secondary literature on Islamic epistemology and digital religion. The study finds that Qur’anic interpretations on these platforms often reflect selective reading and cherry-picking of verses that support entrepreneurial and motivational narratives, frequently detaching scriptural meaning from scholarly traditions. Authority over interpretation shifts from ulama to digital influencers, creating a fragmented epistemic environment that privileges virality over exegetical rigor. This research contributes to the growing field of digital religion by articulating how algorithm-driven content production facilitates new forms of textual reception, theological authority, and spiritual branding. It integrates insights from the theory of text reception and epistemic distortion to frame this trend as a reconfiguration of Qur’anic meaning under the pressures of digital capitalism. The findings call for greater literacy in Qur’anic hermeneutics within digital media spaces and encourage religious authorities, educators, and policymakers to develop guidelines for ethical and theologically sound online da'wah practice. This study focuses on a small number of Instagram accounts and does not fully explore platform-based variation (e.g., TikTok, YouTube) or broader demographic responses, such as youth and inter-sectarian interpretations. Future research should expand the comparative scope and include quantitative engagement metrics

Abstract

This study examines the practice of female circumcision in Palopo City from the perspective of living hadith, which integrates religious and cultural teachings in daily life. The practice of female circumcision, although controversial, is still practiced in Palopo as part of family and community traditions. This study uses the living hadith approach to understand how the people of Palopo interpret and apply the hadith related to female circumcision in their local context. The findings show that female circumcision is seen as a form of fulfilling religious teachings and maintaining the purity and honor of girls, while also being an important rite of passage in the local culture. However, with increasing awareness of health and human rights issues, there have been changes in views and practices among communities. This research provides insight into the complexity of the interaction between religious and cultural teachings in the practice of female circumcision in Palopo City, and the importance of a holistic and contextual approach in understanding and addressing this issue.

Abstract

To Sallang is a term addressed to minority Muslims who live in Toraja. Even though they are a minority, they can live side by side, without losing their Islamic identity. This research aims to find out To Sallang's resilience strategy to survive among the mainstream religions and customs of the Toraja people who are predominantly Christian. In addition, it also aims to explore religious aspects that can strengthen To Sallang community to survive and adapt to a multicultural society. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research results show that To Sallang manages to maintain their social identity as a native of Toraja descent, as well as negotiate personal identity as a Muslim community by adapting their genius and creative assimilation to universal religious values and local wisdom (indigenous knowledge). Through theological concepts such as fitrah-sunnatullah (natural law), hablum min al-nas (social interaction), hurmatu al-takrim (respect and honor), and al-ma'ruf (values of goodness and wisdom that are rooted in the traditions of society) synchronized with local wisdom values such as sikamali (love-miss each other), siangga' (mutual respect), and siangkaran (help each other), To Sallang can present a comprehensive picture of religiosity that accommodates religious aspirations with cultural characteristics. To Sallang strategy could be the best practice and reference to build religious and cultural co-existence since they can survive with their Islamic identity and local wisdom to live together in a multicultural society. It can also be a blueprint for religious and cultural harmony in overcoming potential conflicts caused by ethnic and religious differences.

Abstract

This research aims to delves into the survival strategies of Islam Garassik adherents within the diverse context of Tana Toraja society in South Sulawesi. Islam Garassik is not only a subculture in Torajan culture, but also a double minority group. They are not only a minority within the mainstream of Torajan culture but also within the Islamic community itself. This qualitative research employs an interpretative phenomenological approach within Tana Toraja Regency, specifically in Gandangbatu Sillanan Sub-district. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research results show that Islam Garassik is an emerging form of Muslim religiosity in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi, particularly in Lembang Garassik and Gandangbatu Sillanan sub-districts. This phenomenon combines Islamic teachings with local values, showing Islamic syncretism that is friendly to local traditions. Garassik Islam was born out of interactions with Bugis merchants in Mebali, a traditional market, and was influenced by the long and intense history of struggle between religious and cultural institutions in South Sulawesi. As a multiple minority group, Garassik Islam adherents face social exclusion that pushes them to defend their existential identity and values, including religious understanding and ritual practices. In their defense strategy, they negotiate their identity by integrating religious values and traditions, using Sufistic narratives, and interacting with other Muslim groups. This strategy allows them to maintain their religious identity and cultural diversity, establish harmonious relations with the surrounding community, and provide space for the growth of Islam in the rich cultural context of Tana Toraja.
