Abstract

The community engagement activity is specifically designed to discover the impact of “The Snake” and “The Eagle” method in enhancing the teachers’ competence in English language teaching and learning. Contextually, the teaching method is closely related to the achievement of the goals of the teaching itself. Considering the importance of teaching approach, designing the class activities remains essential. This approach is considered to be simple and easy to internalize English learning materials such as new vocabularies and tenses, past tense for example. Therefore, the current research aims to discover how the implemented approach carries influencing outcomes to learning English. This activity engaged a number of English teachers in Pangongsean, Patapan, Bringin Nunggal villages in Torjun Sub-District, Sampang District. To reveal its impacts, we invited the English teachers in the given areas to engage in this practice so as to they are well informed about this teaching method. We also invited some students to have direct practices after the method insights given. Later, we did interview with English teachers to get to know how the teaching method would be useful in their context. Research shows that the method remains both useful and applicative for English teachers’ competence in teaching English. The other sides of the current research are the challenges faced. The students’ lack of vocabularies and low level of their motivation are problematic. In addition, having more time to practice the method is required so that we can give more room to both teachers and students to have more fun learning by using “Si Ular” dan “Si Elang” method in learning English.

Abstract

. Every speaker should comprehend deixis to enhance the quality of communication with the interlocutor. This study investigates kinds of deixis and their references found in Madurese Culinary Writings. The data source of the study is the students’ Madurese Culinary Writings. It utilizes a qualitative research design. The data are gathered through observation and document review. During the data collection process, field notes are also used. The data are analyzed using an interactive model of data analysis, which includes data reduction, data display, and data verification/claim. The study's findings demonstrate that all types of deixes are found in Madurese Culinary Writings. Person deixis becomes the most frequent type of deixis including all data found, it has 70 data. The next position provides that place deixis is in the second position having 31 data. Then, discourse deixis has 21 data and time deixis has 13 data, and the lowest frequent type of deixis is social deixis having 6 data. Besides, the references found in this research: person deixes found are “I”, “we”, “us”, “my” as first person deixes; “You” as second person deixis; “They”, “it” as third person deixes which belong to person deixes; Place deixes found are “Serpang”, “Bangkalan”, “Arosbaya”; Time deixes found are “then”, “after”, “for 3-4 hours” ; discourse deixes found were “this”, “that”; and the last, social deixes found are “the seller”, ”my parents”.

Abstract

Bahasa figuratif atau bahasa kiasan adalah bahasa yang digunakan untuk perbandingan antara berbagai objek dalam upaya mencapai bahasa literal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis bahasa figuratif dan mengetahui jenis bahasa figuratif yang paling sering digunakan dalam naskah film berjudul “House of Gucci” yang disutradai oleh Ridley Scott dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif oleh Miles, Huberman, Saldana (2014). Teori yang digunakan dalam menganalisa sumber data adalah teori jenis bahasa figuratif dari Knickerbocker dan Reninger (1963). Adapun tehnik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan tehnik dokumentasi dengan empat tahap; (1) identifikasi; (2) Klasifikasi; (3) analisis; (4) deskripsi. Dari analisa, ditemukan 182 data bahasa figuratif pada naskah film House of Gucci, yang terdiri dari 50% metaphor 19% hiperbola, 15 % simile, 12% ironi, dan 4% personifikasi. Dapat diambil kesimpulan bahwa naskah film ini menggunakan bahasa figuratif dan jenis bahasa figuratif yang sering digunakan adalah metafora. Kata kunci: Bahasa figuratif; Semantik; Naskah film

Abstract

This article discusses the perspective of Madurese people in terms of the politeness context of the word ‘sampèyan’ that they use in communication. It discusses who and under what circumstances or situations the word ‘sampèyan’ is used by the Madurese, and how their views are related to the values of modesty attached to the word. By using questionnaire and interview methods, the results of the study show that the word ‘sampèyan’ is commonly used by Madurese people (who use Madurese in their daily life) to parents, teachers, older people, foreigners who just met and known, and to people who are respected, such as community leaders (klebun, belater, camat, regent). However, if the word ‘sampèyan’ is used together with Bahasa Indonesia, it will have an essence and sense (meaning) that are different from the original essence of the Madurese language. In general, the word ‘sampèyan’ can be used in both formal and informal situations. Additionally, associated with the values of politeness that apply to the culture and social norms of the Madurese community, most Madurese people believe that the word ‘sampèyan’ can still be categorized in polite language groups, because according to the language level of Madurese it belongs to the engghi-enten language group and is still appropriate to be used to people they respect. Even though basically there are still higher levels, for example the words ‘panjenengan’ and ‘ajunan’ to show politeness, the word ‘panjenengan’ is only used specifically for the Kyai or Ulama’ and his family, and the word ‘ajunan’ is commonly used together with the word ‘Allah’. However, the results of the study also show that the word ‘sampèyan’ would be disrespectful if it is used roughly to ridicule and harass others because these attitudes are categorized as the attitudes of cangkolang (bad attitudes) and are not acceptable in the social norms of the Madurese community.Key Words: Politeness Context, ‘Sampèyan’, Madurese Language, Madurese Community

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis makna konotatif dan penggunaannya dalam lirik lagu. Penelitian ini menggunakan metodologi kualitatif deskriptif untuk menganalisis makna konotatif dalam lirik lagu GRL GVNG dari grup musik Jepang, XG. Data yang terdiri dari tiga puluh tujuh poin data dari verse dan outro lagu tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori Leech dan didukung oleh teori Chaer. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa lagu GRL GVNG oleh XG menyampaikan rasa percaya diri dan tekad yang kuat, menyoroti persatuan, prestasi, dan gaya unik dari sebuah grup. Liriknya menggambarkan anggota XG sebagai individu yang kuat, mandiri, dan percaya diri dalam mencapai kesuksesan yang tinggi saat ini. Keseluruhan makna konotatif dalam lirik lagu ini condong ke arah positif yang mencerminkan tema kepercayaan diri dan kesuksesan.Kata kunci: Makna konotatif, Lirik Lagu, Kepercayaan diri, Kesuksesan, XG
