Abstract

Abstract: The present paper deals with understanding and reinterpreting Madurese proverbs in order to revitalize Madurese values. It is argued that reinterpreting Madurese proverbs both textually and contextually is a necessary requirement for a complete understanding of the positive cultural values they contain. The study, which is descriptive and qualitative in nature, focuses on efforts to understand and interpret Madurese proverbs for the purpose of revitalizing the positive values. Results of the study categorize the cultural values in the proverbs into three main headings: (1) values which are necessary to be preserved and developed, (2) values which require reinterpretation because they may result in misunderstanding and cause terrors to other ethnic groups, and (3) values which need to be imbued with in order to develop positive values in line with today?s Madurese society development.

Abstract

It has been suggested that Madurese has eight surface vowels [a, ɛ, ə, ɔ, ɤ, i, ɨ, u], but there have been disagreements with regard to the number of its vowel phonemes. The disagreements arise partly because some scholars base their analyses of Madurese vowels on phonetic grounds while others base them on certain phonological analyses. Besides, some researchers do not consider native versus non-native Madurese words in their analyses. The paper addresses these problems by incorporating both phonetic and phonological analyses in order to provide a better description of Madurese vowels. To achieve this, we investigated the acoustic realisations of the eight surface vowels by looking at the first and second formant frequencies (F1 and F2) of the high and non-high vowel pairs (i ~ ɛ, ɨ ~ ə, ɤ ~ a, u ~ ɔ). Fifteen speakers of Madurese were recorded reading Madurese words put in a carrier phrase. All segmentations were done employing Praat, and F1 and F2 values were extracted using a Praat script. The data were assessed with a linear mixed-effects model accounting for variation due to both random and fixed factors. The results showed that all high and non-high vowel pairs significantly differed in their F1 values. However, the results for F2 values showed variations; only the pair [ɨ ~ ə] showed a significant difference at vowel onset and at vowel midpoint the pairs [i ~ ɛ] and [ɨ ~ ə] were significantly different. Furthermore, we also looked at the vowels [ɤ] and [ɨ] as well as [ɤ] and [ə] to see if they differed in their F1 and F2 values. Our results confirmed that at both vowel onset and midpoint, they were significantly different. The results were discussed employing phonological analysis and vowel dispersion theory. The result of the analyses suggests that Madurese should be best described as a language with a four-vowel system and further offers a solution to the disagreements on the number of vowel phonemes in Madurese

Abstract

Madurese, a Western Malayo-Polynesian language spoken on the Indonesian island of Madura, has been described as having a three-way voicing contrast (i.e. voiced, voiceless unaspirated and voiceless aspirated) in its stops. However, the fact that the VOT values for voiceless unaspirated and aspirated stops are not large and they are also followed by vowels with different height raises a question if Madurese only contrasts voiced and voiceless stops phonologically instead. The goal of this paper is to establish the phonological status of the voicing contrast in Madurese stops, arguing that Madurese can be better described as a language with a three-way contrast. For this purpose, we provide phonological evidence that includes consonant-vowel interactions, vowel harmony processes and some morphophonemic processes involving vowel height alternations. All of this evidence is also used to substantiate the proposal that consonants trigger vowel height alternation rather than vowels trigger consonant allophony.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

AbstractDental and alveolar plosives are commonly treated as similar sounds and it is rare for a language to have both. In fact, the International Phonetic Association (IPA) does not provide different symbols for dental and alveolar plosives. Consequently, researchers variously used different IPA symbols to represent dental and alveolar plosives in Madurese. The goal of this study was to investigate how dental and alveolar plosives were transcribed in Madurese dictionaries, addressing three questions regarding the IPA symbols used by lexicographers to represent the sounds, the reasons they used the symbols, and the appropriateness of the symbols to represent the sounds in Madurese words. This paper applied descriptive qualitative method. Content analysis was used to answer the first question. To answer the second question, interviews with the lexicographers were conducted to get their response and explanation about the symbol which they used. Phonetic transcription reading-tests to 10 English Department students who majored in Linguistics were done to answer the third question. The results showed that dental and alveolar plosives were phonetically transcribed using different IPA symbols in Madurese dictionaries. The lack of the separate symbols for dental plosives in the IPA chart and the lexicographer’s intention to distinguish dental from alveolar plosives were the primary reasons why they were transcribed using the symbols [t d dh] and [ʈ ɖ ɖh], respectively in Dictionary A. The similarity and the interchangeability of dental and alveolar plosives in Madurese were the primary reasons why they were transcribed by the same symbols [t d dh] in Dictionary B. Readers’ mispronunciations of dental and alveolar plosives were also found on both dictionaries.
