Abstract

The research is an inventory aimed at identifying and categorizing the character values in the English package books for students of Islamic Junior High School or Madrasah Tsanawiyah by considering their relevance to Islamic character values in the Quran and Hadits. The method used was content analysis following Bogdan and Biklen model by analyzing, grouping, sorting, and synthesizing the values taken from the package books to draw the patterns.  The patterns were discussed to conclude the final findings to be disseminated as the list of inventory.  The main data source was the English package books published by the government and the supporting data were the Core Competencies taken from Curriculum 2013 for Junior High School (SMP) and Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) or Islamic Junior High School students. There are 10 values inserted in the package books that are relevant to the Islamic religious characters. The result showed various English expressions relevant to Islamic character values which have a long-term and sustainable effect as a reference for character building by English teachers in developing English supplementary materials for Islamic Junior High School students.

Abstract

The innovative learning model Problem Based Learning (PBL) will be applied to overcome the problems faced by students of class VIII, SMP Nusantara Palangka Raya. The problem is the lack of students' ability to understand procedural text and the lack of students' ability to think critically. This research is an experiment with pre-test -> treatment -> post-test design. The instruments used to collect data are interviews, questionnaires, and tests. Data analysis using SPSS. The results showed there was a significant increase from the pretest variable to the posttest variable after receiving treatment, (pretestM = 69.1, SD = 5.527; posttest M = 88.1, SD = 8,478; t(9)=-13,217, p=.000). Then the correlation coefficient value or correlation is 0.872 with a sig value. 0.001 < 0.05. The results of the paired sample test show the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 < 0.05, and the Mean Paired Difference value is -19.000. Since Ha is accepted, these results shown that there is an increase in the understanding of procedural texts through the application of the PBL model and the critical thinking skills of grade VIII students of SMP Nusantara Palangka Raya. Therefore, this study recommends the application of PBL to improve students’ performance.

Abstract

Community Learning Center is a non-governmental organization formed by and for the community that is engaged in learning and is located at the village or sub-district level. To equal education, PKBM has a strategic function to serve all school-age children or people who want to go to school but are unable to attend school. Like others, PKBM Katimpun has also carried out its function to serve and provide education for the surrounding community. The presence of PKBM is a forum for carrying out various educational activities that are equivalent to formal schools in general. The problems faced by PKBM Katimpun are the need to increase expertise in the field of technology and information so that students can compete in the work field later. In addition, students also need to improve their academic abilities. In this case, English lessons are one of the subjects that contribute to the development of skills for students in their future work. Therefore, we took the initiative to combine these two targets into one training material which is expected to improve skills in IT as well as the ability to learn and write English texts. This community service activity is intended to provide training to PKBM Katimpun students through two materials, namely the use of the Canva application and learning to write procedure texts in English.

Abstract

This community service program was implemented with the main objective of improving children’s literacy and English vocabulary skills while promoting anti-bullying values at El-Ministry Orphanage in Palangka Raya. The program was designed as a collaborative effort between the implementation team and the orphanage to address the limited educational resources, particularly in foreign language learning and character development. The program was conducted in two sessions consisting of three main activities: (1) English literacy practice, (2) socialization and education on anti-bullying values, and (3) creative content production based on vocabulary learning. During the literacy and socialization sessions, children were encouraged to participate actively through discussions, storytelling, role-play, and interactive quizzes that combined learning with entertainment. The creative content activity focused on vocabulary memorization and enrichment using a gamification approach, allowing children to learn through play and healthy competition. The results indicate a noticeable improvement in children’s ability to recognize and use basic English vocabulary, along with increased awareness of empathy, tolerance, and anti-bullying values. Overall, this initiative generated positive educational and social impacts, emphasizing the importance of community service programs that integrate literacy enhancement and character education to support children’s growth and development in orphanage environments.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of the role of Character.AI in developing speaking skills and supporting adaptive communicative practice. Most existing studies on AI in language learning primarily focus on tools that rely on structured or predefined prompts, which tend to be monotonous and less effective in fostering adaptive speaking development. However, limited attention has been given to more interactive, persona-driven AI platforms that can simulate real-life communication. To address this gap, this study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach involving five (5) eighth-semester students of the English Education Study Program who had experience using Character.AI for speaking practice. Data were collected through triangulation methods, including questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that Character.AI contributes to the development of speaking skills, including improvements in fluency, confidence, motivation, vocabulary, willingness to speak, as well as a reduction in speaking anxiety. It also facilitates adaptive communicative practice by promoting adaptability, flexibility and accessibility in speaking activities. However, some limitations were identified, particularly in generating occasionally unnatural responses, indicating that it cannot fully replace authentic human interaction. Therefore, Character.AI is best utilized as a supplementary tool to support students in preparing for real-life communication.
