Abstract

The research is an inventory aimed at identifying and categorizing the character values in the English package books for students of Islamic Junior High School or Madrasah Tsanawiyah by considering their relevance to Islamic character values in the Quran and Hadits. The method used was content analysis following Bogdan and Biklen model by analyzing, grouping, sorting, and synthesizing the values taken from the package books to draw the patterns.  The patterns were discussed to conclude the final findings to be disseminated as the list of inventory.  The main data source was the English package books published by the government and the supporting data were the Core Competencies taken from Curriculum 2013 for Junior High School (SMP) and Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) or Islamic Junior High School students. There are 10 values inserted in the package books that are relevant to the Islamic religious characters. The result showed various English expressions relevant to Islamic character values which have a long-term and sustainable effect as a reference for character building by English teachers in developing English supplementary materials for Islamic Junior High School students.

Abstract

The innovative learning model Problem Based Learning (PBL) will be applied to overcome the problems faced by students of class VIII, SMP Nusantara Palangka Raya. The problem is the lack of students' ability to understand procedural text and the lack of students' ability to think critically. This research is an experiment with pre-test -> treatment -> post-test design. The instruments used to collect data are interviews, questionnaires, and tests. Data analysis using SPSS. The results showed there was a significant increase from the pretest variable to the posttest variable after receiving treatment, (pretestM = 69.1, SD = 5.527; posttest M = 88.1, SD = 8,478; t(9)=-13,217, p=.000). Then the correlation coefficient value or correlation is 0.872 with a sig value. 0.001 < 0.05. The results of the paired sample test show the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 < 0.05, and the Mean Paired Difference value is -19.000. Since Ha is accepted, these results shown that there is an increase in the understanding of procedural texts through the application of the PBL model and the critical thinking skills of grade VIII students of SMP Nusantara Palangka Raya. Therefore, this study recommends the application of PBL to improve students’ performance.

Abstract

Community Learning Center is a non-governmental organization formed by and for the community that is engaged in learning and is located at the village or sub-district level. To equal education, PKBM has a strategic function to serve all school-age children or people who want to go to school but are unable to attend school. Like others, PKBM Katimpun has also carried out its function to serve and provide education for the surrounding community. The presence of PKBM is a forum for carrying out various educational activities that are equivalent to formal schools in general. The problems faced by PKBM Katimpun are the need to increase expertise in the field of technology and information so that students can compete in the work field later. In addition, students also need to improve their academic abilities. In this case, English lessons are one of the subjects that contribute to the development of skills for students in their future work. Therefore, we took the initiative to combine these two targets into one training material which is expected to improve skills in IT as well as the ability to learn and write English texts. This community service activity is intended to provide training to PKBM Katimpun students through two materials, namely the use of the Canva application and learning to write procedure texts in English.

Abstract

This study investigates cognitive approaches to Second Language Acquisition (SLA) by examining key components: attention, working memory, L1 transfer, and cognitive restructuring. Despite extensive research on individual cognitive factors in SLA, there remains a critical gap in understanding how these elements interact systemically in multilingual contexts, particularly in Indonesian EFL classrooms where traditional teaching methods often neglect cognitive principles. This study aims to develop an integrated cognitive model of SLA and propose practical pedagogical strategies tailored to Indonesia’s unique multilingual environment. A systematic review is conducted using the SALSA framework (Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, and Analysis), incorporating NVivo 12-assisted thematic analysis of ten peer-reviewed studies published between 2018 and 2023. The methodology follows PRISMA 2020 guidelines for transparent study selection and applies qualitative analysis to identify patterns across diverse cognitive studies. The findings reveal that attention serves as a gateway for input processing and learning, while working memory determines learners’ capacity to handle linguistic information. Additionally, L1 transfer either facilitates or hinders L2 learning depending on language distance and learner awareness. Cognitive restructuring enables proceduralization of explicit knowledge. In the Indonesian EFL context, these mechanisms are especially relevant. This study suggests cognitively informed instruction to enhance learning outcomes.
