Abstract

Appraising the trend that students are welcomed to independently make their own choices in learning, this study investigated college students’ preferences and considerations on self-chosen materials for extended reading (ER). A survey was conducted on 32 college students majoring in ELT who has taken reading courses. The survey consisted of ten questions, all related to their preferences and considerations in choosing the materials to read for ER activities. The results extracted led to the conclusions that authentic materials are more favorable over graded readers, and the difficulty level of the text considered as the foremost priority. Interested researchers are apprised to conduct an experiment that allows better and deeper analysis to gain insights on providing materials for ER in the EFL contexts for the students to select by themselves.

Abstract

This research article provides an examination of the challenges faced by students during the composition of procedure texts. It aims to uncover factors influencing students' proficiency. Utilizing thematic analysis, we analyzed students' written texts and conducted interviews with junior high school English teachers and students, providing a holistic perspective.   Four significant areas of difficulty were identified: minimal word and phrase variations, lack of clarity and precision, ignorance of writing mechanisms, and challenges with grammar and spelling. These challenges provided insights into the recurring patterns of students"™ writing. Factors contributing to these difficulties included motivational factors, language environment, language proficiency, and formal presentation aspects. Student motivation to write and seek comments was hindered by low intrinsic motivation. Students' writing talents were also shaped by language exposure and proficiency, which varied by background and experience. Additionally, formal presentation characteristics and technology-based teaching strategy restrictions underlined the need for improved infrastructure to accommodate various and engaging teaching methods. In conclusion, the research sheds light on the intricate landscape of students' struggles in composing texts and underscores the urgency of providing tailored teaching strategies to address these challenges effectively while also keeping the influencing factors in consideration.

Abstract

This study investigates the pronunciation challenges Indonesian EFL learners face with English consonant fricatives. The research aimed to identify common pronunciation errors, explore underlying causes, and propose strategies for improvement. Using an explanatory sequential design, 30 undergraduate students completed a pronunciation test focusing on fricatives, followed by interviews with 10 students who made the most errors. The analysis revealed frequent mispronunciations of fricatives such as /ʒ/, /v/, and /θ/, often substituted with native sounds like /s/, /z/, and /t/. Voiced fricatives posed greater difficulties than voiceless ones, especially in contexts where Indonesian has no phonetic equivalent. Interviews highlighted a lack of familiarity with these sounds and insufficient pronunciation training as primary challenges. Native language interference and limited exposure to correct English pronunciation were significant factors in these difficulties. The findings call for more targeted instruction in English fricatives within the Indonesian EFL context. Further research with larger sample sizes and longitudinal approaches is recommended to explore long-term outcomes.

Abstract

The study investigates the alignment between EFL teachers' perceptions of students' writing difficulties and the actual performance of students in vocabulary, grammar, organization, and mechanics. Using semi-structured interviews with five certified EFL teachers and written tests from 28 junior high school students, the research employs thematic and content analysis. Results show strong alignment in vocabulary and grammar, highlighting issues such as limited vocabulary range and frequent grammatical errors. However, significant misalignment is found in organization and mechanics, with teachers overestimating students' skills in structuring essays and using punctuation. The findings underscore the pressing need to address these gaps, as the misalignment between teacher perceptions and student performance hinders effective instruction and student progress in writing proficiency. Bridging this gap is crucial for fostering holistic EFL writing skills. Suggestions include structured feedback rubrics, peer evaluations, and professional development workshops to enhance teaching practices. This study contributes to improving EFL instruction by identifying gaps in teacher-student alignment and proposing targeted interventions for better writing proficiency.

Abstract

In English language learning, web-based learning (WBL) provides a critical tool for practicing speaking skills, which requires synchronous interactions for effective learning. This study explores the efficacy of the "Harati Speaking" website, a web-based platform designed to enhance spoken English skills among Intermediate English learners. The research employs a quantitative descriptive method involving 64 second-year bachelor students from an Indonesian university's English Education Study Program. Data were gathered using the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ), which evaluates six categories of user experience: attractiveness, perspicuity, efficiency, dependability, stimulation, and novelty. Results indicate a generally positive user experience, with specific strengths in the website's ability to provide an engaging and efficient learning environment. However, novelty and certain aspects of attractiveness and dependability received lower, though still satisfactory, ratings, suggesting room for design enhancements. Overall, the "Harati Speaking" website proves to be a valuable tool for practicing English speaking skills, contributing positively to the language learning process in a foreign language classroom. This study provides valuable insights into how such platforms can facilitate synchronous interactions essential for effective language learning. For future development of the "Harati Speaking" website, more innovative and engaging features could boost the web novelty, including gamification elements and interactive scenarios. By addressing these areas, future research can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the potential and optimization of web-based learning tools for English learning.

Abstract

This research investigates how various contextual factors influence the accuracy of English pronunciation among Indonesian EFL learners. Motivation, exposure to the second language (L2), formal education, and interference from the first language (L1) are explored to address a gap in understanding their combined impact. Employing an explanatory sequential approach, the research gathers quantitative data through questionnaires and pronunciation tests administered to 30 EFL learners, selected using cluster sampling from a total of 80 students across three classes. Qualitative insights were then obtained from five randomly chosen participants in follow-up interviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics, while the qualitative data were examined through deductive thematic analysis. The findings reveal that L1 interference has the strongest impact on pronunciation accuracy, particularly in fricatives and diphthongs, where learners substitute unfamiliar sounds with native ones. L2 exposure significantly improves pronunciation, especially through authentic media and interactions. Motivation, while influential, indirectly aids pronunciation by fostering self-directed learning. However, formal education has minimal impact, as pronunciation receives little focus in traditional classrooms. These results highlight the need for targeted phonetic training, immersive exposure, and explicit pronunciation instruction. The study calls for pedagogical reforms to enhance communicative competence and confidence.

Abstract

This study investigates Indonesian EFL teachers’ perceptions and implementation of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in rural Central Kalimantan. Using a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews, it explores how teachers integrate content, pedagogy, and technology in their classroom practices. The findings show that teachers demonstrate strong confidence in content and technological knowledge, adapting instruction to students’ needs and displaying positive attitudes toward technology integration. However, challenges persist in pedagogical domains, particularly in fostering collaboration, and are compounded by infrastructural limitations, digital inequities, and restrictive institutional policies. This study highlights rural teachers’ adaptive strategies under constrained conditions, expanding TPACK beyond urban settings. The implications call for teacher training that emphasizes pedagogically grounded and context-sensitive approaches, and for policies that strengthen rural digital infrastructure and promote equitable access. Future research should broaden the extent to a broader rural context, include learner perspectives, and examine teachers’ sustainable TPACK development.
