Abstract

This research explores the significant role of foster parents in shaping the social interaction of children in Al Washliyah Orphanage, Binjai City. Using a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, the study involved in-depth observations, direct interviews with foster parents and foster children, as well as analysis of related documentation. Data analysis uses data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results revealed that foster parents adopt various strategies, including advice-giving, encouragement to interact, and organizing social activities, to improve children's social skills. However, the results still showed that some foster children had difficulties in interacting and tended to be withdrawn, highlighting the need for additional methods and more modern adaptations. These findings emphasize the importance of innovation in parenting approaches to support the social development of children in orphanages more effectively and sustainably.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the causes and symptoms of stress, as well as the coping strategies employed by students of the Islamic Guidance and Counseling Program at the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication, State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU), in facing academic pressure that affects their academic performance. A qualitative approach with a case study method was used. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving six active students who were experiencing academic stress during their coursework. The findings indicate that academic stress is caused by multiple factors, including heavy workload, difficulty understanding course materials, limited learning resources, and pressure to maintain or improve their Grade Point Average (GPA). Symptoms of stress included physical fatigue, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and decreased motivation. To cope with these challenges, students employed a combination of strategies: problem-focused coping such as time management and seeking additional resources; emotion-focused coping such as calming themselves and seeking emotional support; and religious coping through spiritual activities such as reciting the Qur’an, performing sunnah prayers, and sending blessings upon the Prophet. These flexible and adaptive coping strategies were found to be effective in managing academic pressure and supporting optimal academic performance.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a Tazkiyat al-Nafs-based guidance and counseling laboratory program to enhance counseling practice skills among Islamic Guidance and Counseling students. This study employed a Research and Development approach using the ADDIE model. The program was designed as an eight-session laboratory practicum, with each session lasting approximately 120 minutes. The program integrated counseling skills training, case simulations, role-playing, peer counseling, supervised practice, muhasabah reflection, and competency-based assessment. Thirty-two students were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through focus group discussions, interviews, observations, questionnaires, and documentation, and were analyzed to examine validity, practicality, and potential effectiveness. The program was categorized as highly valid, with an average expert validation score of 0.86, and highly practical, with a practicality score of 84.20%. The limited trial showed improvement in students’ counseling practice skills, with the mean score increasing from 68.04 to 84.07, an N-Gain score of 0.52, and a paired-samples t-test result of p < .001. The program may strengthen laboratory-based Islamic counseling training, although the findings are limited by the one-group design, short implementation period, and absence of a control group. This study offers an integrative Islamic counseling laboratory model that operationalizes Tazkiyat al-Nafs through adab, rahmah, muhasabah, supervision, and reflective counseling practice.
