Abstract

This study is a transitivity analysis of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (1960). This study aims to investigate representation of a colored man named Tom Robinson through the types of process related to Tom Robinson. By using qualitative research, the research used the theory of Transitivity proposed by Halliday (1994). The data sources were in the form of eighteen clauses that specifically represent Tom Robinson and were sorted by concordance software Antconc 3.8.1. The findings of the research showed that there are four processes found in the clauses related to the character. Material process is the most frequent process (50%) followed by Relational process (27%) which are divided into two: Attributive Relational process (22%) and Identifying Relational Process (5%), Mental process (17%), and Verbal process (7%) are the second lowest and least frequent type in this research. The result of the research indicates that Tom Robinson as one of the people of color in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is represented as a man who experienced social injustice. Keywords: Representation, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Ideational Meaning, Transitivity

Abstract

An abstract is a brief overview of a research paper. Indonesian undergraduate students are often required to submit their thesis abstracts in Indonesian and English. Various studies related to rhetorical move and translation techniques of abstracts have been done previously, but not many analyzed undergraduate students’ thesis abstracts across languages. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the move-step of the abstracts, and to see translation techniques in different abstract moves. This study used 60 undergraduate thesis abstracts from English Language and Literature and Indonesian Language Literature study programs as the data. As the framework for the data analysis, this study employed Hyland’s (2000) five-move model and Molina & Albir’s (2002) translation techniques. The findings show that despite writing in different languages, both Indonesian and English abstracts were realized with similar rhetorical moves and steps. Move 3 and 4 were found in all of the abstracts, while Move 5 was only realized in small numbers across languages. In relation to translation techniques, it is found that Literal translation is used more frequently than other translation techniques. This study recommends a more extensive study that involves more data from different fields to expand the existing knowledge relating to rhetorical move and translation techniques in the academic field, especially in undergraduate students’ abstracts.

Abstract

In this pandemic era, some people seek knowledge and entertainment in digital audio content such as podcasts to reduce staring at computer and cell phone screens. Along with the massive trend, podcast speakers use particular language styles to get robust conversation and a large number of podcast listeners. Therefore, this study aims to identify the interpersonal meaning of the Not Overthinking podcast, as one of today's most popular podcasts. The data include the transcript texts of the three most popular episodes of the Not Overthinking podcast: “Why do we like to be correct?”, “Why are we scared to put ourselves out there?” and “Why do we struggle with consistency?” collected from Spotify. This study adopted Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on the mood types and speech functions. This study found all the mood types and speech functions in the data. The dominant mood type is declarative, and the dominant speech function is statement. The finding of this study provides a clearer picture of podcast speakers who use statements more often to share knowledge and experience. In addition, the speakers also positioned themselves equal to the listeners.

Abstract

This study explores the ideational meanings of multimodal texts in an EFL textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris: When English Rings a Bell”. This study aims to describe the meanings of visual and verbal modes from ideational aspects. The visual modes were analyzed by using Visual Grammar Design framework (Kress van Leeuwen, 2006). Meanwhile, the verbal modes were analyzed using Systemic Functional Grammar theory focusing on the Transitivity system (Halliday, 1994). The ideational aspects of this study focus on components like participants, processes and circumstances. This study applied Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (henceforth SF-MDA) methodology. The findings of this study found that the dominant process types used in realizing the ideational meaning of the verbal text is relational process. Meanwhile, the ideational meaning of visual text is realized mostly through speech process. This study showed that the presentation of multimodal texts in the EFL textbook is relevant to the teaching and learning activity for the Junior high school students. Keywords: multimodality, ideational meaning, systemic functional grammar, multimodal analysis

Abstract

Our initial observation confirms that authentic teaching materials have not been integrated into teaching Sundanese. With this in mind, the present study aims mainly to describe authentic teaching materials for teaching Sundanese to elementary school students. A descriptive-analytical method with a qualitative approach has been employed as the method in the present research. Data were collected by inventorying authentic teaching materials from YouTube and identifying their relevance to the 2013 Curriculum (Revised edition in 2017). The data obtained is expected to be used as authentic material in the Independent Curriculum. At the time this research was conducted, the Merdeka Curriculum had already begun to be implemented in several driving schools in West Java. The authentic materials we investigated will most likely be compatible to be used as material for project-based learning on Kurikulum Merdeka. The present research has inventoried 17 types of pupuh and found that of 17 pupuh, four have content that is relevant to the teaching theme for elementary school students based on the Curriculum; 3 pupuh, Dangdanggula, Asmarandana, and Gurisa, have content relevant to the theme of second grade Basic Competence, 1 pupuh, Maskumambang pupuh, has content relevant to the theme of third grade Basic Competence. The data were then assessed for their quality based on the criteria for good teaching materials according to the judgment of experts. Selected Sundanese language teachers have been involved in the research to serve as the experts. The results of the quality test reported that the inventoried pupuh is relevant to the Basic Competence as stated in the Curriculum, can motivate students to learn, is practical to use, is useful for students, is interesting to learn, facilitate students to learn, and improves their listening skills and is following the norms prevailing in society.

Abstract

Social media has become an important means for people to express their opinions and criticisms on various issues, including issues related to local government policies. Criticism towards local governments triggers various interpretations in society. Academics in the field of linguistics should respond to such issues by conducting research, one of which is discourse analysis from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The purpose of this research is to reveal how speakers express their attitudes, judgments, and emotions through the language they use to convey criticism towards local government policies. This research employs a qualitative design. The data source is derived from the social media platform, TikTok in the form of videos criticizing local government policies. The result of this research indicate that the aspect of judgment dominates in the transcripts of videos criticizing local government policies followed by appreciation in second place and affect in third place. The most frequently used judgment is personal – negative – criticizing – direct. This aligns with the main objective of the videos criticizing local government policies used as data in this research, which is to criticize or evaluate. After judgment, negative appreciation is the second most prevalent. Lastly, negative affect – direct is the least frequently found in the research data.
