Abstract

The purpose of this study was to look at conjunctions in a descriptive text from a Senior High School textbook for the tenth grade. The English Textbook for Tenth Grade was employed as the research sample, and we chose SMA N 20 Medan English Textbook. This study employed two instruments: the first was a search for all the conjunction meanings, functions, and types, and the second was an analysis of the conjunctions used in the English textbook for Senior High School's Tenth Grade. The results of this study revealed that the most common types of conjunctions in English textbooks. The table shows that the Coordinating Conjunction is the most common type of conjunction in a descriptive text used in the English Textbook.  The results revealed that the Coordinating Conjunctions are most prominent in the English Textbook for Senior High School's tenth grade. Which, the word “and” is most shown on the descriptive text of the English Textbook used in the tenth grade of senior high school.

Abstract

This research is a study of affixation in recount text stories in eight grade English books at SMP Sw Cendramata Medan. The purpose of this study was to determine the types of affixes contained in the story and where the affixes contained in a story in the form of recount text. This affixis can also be found in morphology where morphology is the study of word structure and studying changes in word changes that have their respective groups and have meaning changes in the word.Morphology has 2 types, namely from facies and fection, from facies.  This is related to affixes, to recognize these affixes through 2 ways, namely prefix and suffix. The affix that is located at the beginning of the word is called the prefix while the affix that is located at the end of the word is called the suffix. Based on its location, the affix has 3 types, namely prefix, insertion, and suffix, and based on its function, the affix consists of affixes from facies and inflections.Affixes that cause a change in meaning,recall is often used in a story. This research analyzes and its object is the recount text story contained in the eighth grade reading book. With the title of the story The story of holiday at home. qualitative descriptive is the method used in this research.After the research was conducted, the results of the data analysis found that the use of a suffix was more significant in the recout text story .The result of this research is to find any  the suffix affix that dominates the story and the result of the data is that there are 7 suffixes, namely 7 -s,-ed, -ing, -es, -ers, -ty and –ness.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the kinds of translation method used by the eight grade students at SMP Yayasan Perguruan Karya Bhakti. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative. The sample of this research was the eight grade students at SMP Yayasan Karya Bhakti. There are two instruments of this research, namely the first test is about translating the English text into Bahasa and the second test is interview test, there are 10 questions in interview test. In translation analysis process, the researchers used theory of translation method based on Newmark theory. The findings of this research showed that there are only four method used by the students in translating the text. They are Literal Translation, Faithful Translation, Word-for-Word Translation and Free Translation. It can be seen from the table that the most dominat method used by 10 students was literal translation and faithful translation method. The second dominant was word-for-word translation and free translation method. Here, the students used more than one method to tranlate the descriptive text.

Abstract

This study focuses on the effect of the GIST strategy on the reading comprehension of SMK Sinar Husni BM Labuhan Deli students. This study aims to find ways to improve students' reading comprehension through basic strategies. Lack of student knowledge of what the text says about it. The design of experiments was used in this study. The author taught two different classes at SMK Sinar Husni BM Labuhan Deli. They were a control class and an experimental class. The population of this study is 50 students consisting of two classes. Data is collected through reading comprehension tests. The author uses two tests. There are pre-test and post-test. By using the experimentally guided GIST strategy, the reading comprehension of the students after treatment was improved. The results of this study show that The Effect of GIST Strategy in Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension
