Abstract

This  paper  addresses  the  issue  of  how  the  position  of  theoretical  Sufism  in  the interpretation  of  the  Qur’an.  Departing  from  some  reasons  for  rejecting  the  validity of  Sufistic  method  of  Qur’anic  interpretation  (isharī  method),  the  author  sees  the need  to  explain  the  nature  of  theoretical  Sufism  and  its  position  based  on  the  logic of  Qur’anic  exegesis.  Some  important  points  which  the  author  tries  to  show  in  this paper are five principles, as follows: First, the theoretical Sufism could be positioned as  a  source  of  interpretation  of  the  Qur’an.  Second,  shuhūd  ‘irfānī  which  is  the  main foundation of theoretical Sufism could be positioned as a source of interpretation of the Qur’an, in the context of the disclosure of meaning, not in the explanation of it. Third, theoretical Sufism might be used as a source or indicator to determine a position in the interpretation of the Qur’an. Fourth, every hypothetical (zhannī) proposition in the Qur’ānic interpretation must not conflict with the certaint (qaṭ’ī) rational proposition in the theoretical Sufism. Fifth, Sufistic interpretation of the Qur’an is a particular form of a set of method of Qur’anic interpretation, which can be combined with the other methods, to achieve an eclectic and holistic interpretation of the Qur’an. The author also gives an example as the application of those five principles in the interpretation of the meaning of khalīfah fī al-ardh in al-Baqarah [2]: 30.

Abstract

PurposeStarting from the consensus of the principal Sufi scholars and non-Sufi scholars in affirming Tawhid as a religious principle and the Qur’an as the main reference, this paper focused on the doctrine of Sufism through Nur (the Light) Verse. The study aimed to enhanced their agreement through the literalism method, even in its most elementary form, namely literal translation.MethodUsing the literal translation method, the study tried to answer whether Wahdatul Wujud could be explored and confirmed by the literal translation of the Light verse. Besides helping to clarify Wahdatul Wujud, it also confirmed the Sufi’s doctrine through comparing its results with other verses.Results/FindingsThe study pointed out that the doctrine of Wahdatul Wujud could be explained and elaborated through the literal translation of the Light verse; the explanation of Wahdatul Wujud confirmed its difference from the doctrine of hulul and ittihad; and the explanation and argumentation of Wahdatul Wujud did not only clear up misunderstandings but also opened the opportunity to reduce the tension between Sufi and others due tothe polemic of the doctrine.ConclusionThe literal translation needs to be further examined for its application to verses other than the light verse referred to by the Sufis in explaining Wahdatul Wujud or other Sufism doctrines such as the concept of heresy (al-dhalal), the concept of injustice (al-dzulm), infidel, shirk, agnoseology (al-ta'thil), and the degree of essence (maqam al-dzat).

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools, known as pesantrens, serve as institutions dedicated to the preservation of knowledge passed down by their respective kiyai. The significance of pesantrens in Indonesia within the national education framework has expanded, influencing various sectors. Their impact on both national and international education has increased progressively, emphasizing modernization, educational quality, community dynamics within Islamic boarding schools, and human capital. The primary objective of this research is to elucidate the role played by the intellectual network of pesantrens in Indonesia. This investigation is conducted through a comprehensive review of existing literature using qualitative research methods. The analytical approach employed encompasses both descriptive and critical analyses. The study reveals that present-day pesantrens encounter a multitude of challenges that necessitate appropriate solutions. Among these challenges is the emergence of the Islamic reform movement. The enduring presence of pesantrens in Indonesia can be attributed to deep-rooted socio-historical foundations and the robust support of the intellectual network within these institutions. Consequently, these schools continue to fulfill a crucial function in disseminating knowledge within the community. It is evident from this study that the intellectual network of pesantrens plays a pivotal role in shaping societal dynamics. Moreover, this network must be attuned to contemporary challenges in order to ensure the sustained relevance and enhanced quality of pesantrens as key sources of scholarly expertise.

Abstract

The study of love in the Qur’an has predominantly focused on its psychological dimension, viewing it as a manifestation of human emotions. However, the Qur’an places love in a broader context, emphasizing the centrality of God and transcending conventional subject-object relationships. Notably, the verses addressing love in the Qur’an often overlook its multifaceted dimensions. The contemporary discourse on reinterpreting religion through the lens of love underscores the need to comprehend the implications of love’s interpretation in exegesis books. Grounded in this context, this research aims to unravel the dimensions and implications of love’s meaning in Makārim Shīrāzī’s exegesis, al-Amthal. Employing an interpretative approach, the findings reveal four dimensions proposed by Makārim Shīrāzī: firstly, a philosophical dimension rooted in the dichotomy of genuine and illusory love; secondly, a religious dimension positioning love as the “substance of religion”; thirdly, a social dimension where love forms the basis for tranquility (iṭmi‘nān) and societal peace (sakan); and finally, a psychological dimension portraying love as an emotion existing alongside hatred. These dimensions bear implications for issues related to divinity, prophethood, social relations, and tolerance. This research contributes to refining the interpretation of love in Islam, fostering a nuanced understanding that transcends exclusive and extreme religious perspectives.

Abstract

This research departs from the conflict between Jabiri's fragmented geo-epistemology and his antipathy towards ‘irfānī epistemology, vis a vis the character and style of Indonesian Islamic reasoning. The strong influence of Jabiri's thoughts in this country makes it important to answer the question of the development of the discourse on the criticism of Arab Islamic reasoning, how Indonesian figures absorb his thoughts, and how to develop them in the future. Using the qualitative method and an Islamic philosophical approach, this research comes to the following conclusions: first, Jabiri's fragmented geo-epistemology is not consistent with its initial holistic vision, is stuck in a selective attitude, fails to appreciate Eastern Islamic culture, and rests on assumptions of rationality that lack depth. Second, Jabiri's influence in Indonesian Islamic discourse has not made local figures adhere to a fragmented epistemology, nor have they become antipathetic towards ‘irfānī reasoning. Third, the development of integrative epistemology and 'irfānī epistemology in Indonesian Islamic reasoning can be enriched with a foothold on Neo-Sadra philosophical models. All data in this study were collected using library research methods.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of anger in the Qur'an based on key vocabulary. Anger is discussed in the context of God, the Prophet, and disbelievers, with various positive and negative meanings. The research aims to classify verses about anger and analyze their meanings according to Tafsīr al-Jaylānī. Using a qualitative method and thematic approach (mauḍū'i), this research examines the thoughts of 'Abd al-Qādir Jaylānī. The results show 45 verses discussing anger, with four key terms: gaḍab (anger affecting verbal expression and physical action), makẓūm (anger accompanied by grudge), gayẓ (explosive anger that damages the heart), and sukhṭ (anger due to inappropriate actions). This research provides insights into various aspects of anger in the Qur'an and its interpretation in Tafsīr al-Jaylānī.
