Abstract

Abstract

This writing attempts to uncover the common ground between the West and Islam in one concept that each possesses, democracy and shura. Both are different concepts of statehood, as democracy comes from the Western tradition that has become an ideology whose values are relative as it is not based on revelation. The main characteristic of democracy is decisions supported by the majority vote. On the other hand, shura is derived from revelation (the Qur'an and hadith), so its values are absolute (as long as it concerns principles). The common ground between the two lies in their emphasis on consultation in resolving matters that involve the public.

Abstract

In the realm of Political Science, there are various models for selecting leaders of a government. Some involve direct elections, while others rely on representation. Similarly, within Islam, there is diversity in the models of leadership selection. This diversity emerged after the passing of Prophet Muhammad, particularly during the era of the Rashidun Caliphs. This occurred because neither the Quran nor the Hadith provide explicit and detailed instructions regarding the process of selecting a head of state. This article examines the paradigm of leadership selection during the era of the Rashidun Caliphs. It delves into the selection systems for the four caliphs: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali, each of whom, according to the author, had distinct differences. Furthermore, the article provides a comparative analysis between several modern political systems and the concepts espoused by Islam.

Abstract

In societal and governmental life, from ancient times to the present, there has been a need for a set of regulations, whether derived directly from religious teachings or through contemporary decisions based on current needs, whether these regulations have been codified in writing or not, whether they are fundamental (constitutional laws) or developments. With these regulations in place, societal and governmental life becomes orderly and organized. Conversely, without a set of regulations, societal life would undoubtedly become chaotic, disorderly, and would inevitably lead to a law of the jungle. In this context, the author attempts to propose some basic principles for the purpose of governing societal and state life from the perspective of Islamic political thought, including the principles of consultation, equality, freedom, upholding justice, and so forth. These principles are indeed universal values, wherein civilized nations in societal and governmental life also apply these principles, albeit with different interpretations and implementations.
