Abstract

AbstractDiscourse of religious understanding in Indonesia today is a concern of some Indonesian figures and scholars and a wide part of the world. The understanding and deeds of some Muslims do not reflect the universality and "rahmatan" of Islamic teachings. There are some Muslims who are very textual and radical in understanding and practicing Islam, some are secular liberals in understanding and practicing the teachings of Islam. Therefore, in the face of this problem. Researchers wanted to parse it based on abid al-Jabiri's epistimology, namely epistimology bayani, burhani and irfani. This study uses the descriptive-analysis method. The three Epistimological Typologies can be used as a method and basis in maintaining the purity of Islamic teachings and maintaining the value of Rahmatan and its Univerality. The use of Abid al-Jabiri epistimology typology in understanding and practicing Islam can also make Muslims as a ummah who hold on to nusush (text), enthusiastically seek the benefit of all reality and responsive to all challenges/changes of the times.

Abstract

This paper seeks to explain kalimat sawa' in interreligious relations from the perspectives of Hamka and Nurcholish Madjid. Kalimat sawa' is a concept derived from Surah Ali Imran: 64 of the Qur'an frequently employed in interreligious relations. However, scholarly opinions on this concept differ. Some based this concept on religious pluralism, and some rejected it because it confirms that Islam is the only religion that Allah has blessed. Two notable Indonesian intellectuals, namely Hamka and Nurcholish Madjid, are associated with these two distinct concepts. This concept warrants further investigation because it is anticipated to be one of the approaches in interreligious relations. This type of research is qualitative and based on both printed and digital library research. Using comparative analysis, the author describes the perspectives of the two figures to be analyzed and compared in order to reveal their distinct thought patterns. According to Hamka, kalimat sawa' referred to in the Qur'an is an invitation to the Ahli Kitab group to return to monotheism, thereby establishing Islam as the only true religion. In contrast, Nurcholish Madjid interpreted the kalimat sawa' as an effort to unite religions on common ground. This idea is related to the concept of al-Islam as an attitude of submission to God so that no single religion has a monopoly on truth claims. Despite their differences, the idea of kalimat sawa' is an appropriate approach to interreligious relations, which is a similarity between the two.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal and analyze the works and thoughts of Snouck Hurgronje's orientalism in Indonesia. Hurgronje was the most influential orientalist in formulating the Dutch Colonialism policy in Indonesia. Unlike most orientalists who only studied Islam through literature studies, Hurgroje also penetrated directly into the Muslim community and mingled with them, he even managed to infiltrate Muslim intellectuals by pretending to convert to Islam. This research is a qualitative study that uses literature to collect data from books, journals, and other documents related to Hurgronje's thoughts. This research found that there is a deep relationship between orientalism and colonialism as seen in Hurgronje's works. Among his most phenomenal orientalist thoughts is his thesis that the Hajj ritual in Islam is a pagan legacy. Hurgronje also made a strategic move in the Aceh War by advising the Dutch East Indies government to separate religion and politics (secularization). According to Hurgronje, if Islam was integrated with politics, it would encourage people's resistance, which was dangerous for the Dutch. In addition, Hurgronje also developed the Receptie theory which aims to dwarf Islamic law and uphold traditional law to clash the two.
