Abstract

This study examines the genealogical transformation of the Neosufi order in Indonesia, focusing on the shift from a private-ritual institution to an active and open social movement in the public space. Through a qualitative approach based on literature study and hermeneutic analysis, this paper highlights how the Qadiriyah Naqsyabandiyah Order (TQN) Suryalaya represents a new form of Sufism that combines spiritual depth with collective social action. This transformation is seen in various fields, ranging from drug rehabilitation, Islamic boarding school education, to spirituality-based economic empowerment. The order is no longer just a space for contemplation, but also plays a role in the process of social reconciliation, moral advocacy, and expansion into the public space through digital media. However, this dynamic also raises genealogical problems in the form of spiritual symbolization by the state, co-optation of power, and ambiguity in the interpretation of modernity. Indonesian Neosufism is a contextual response to spiritual and social crises, as well as a field of negotiation between the legacy of tradition, the demands of modernity, and the structure of state power. This study is a development of the author's dissertation and academic book manuscript that is being prepared for publication, thus presenting theoretical and practical contributions to the study of Sufism and social development.

Abstract

This study explores the dissemination of Sufi teachings through the TikTok account @Al.Amiin.id, highlighting how visual aesthetics, symbolism, and narrative techniques play a role in conveying spiritual messages to young audiences in the digital era. Using a qualitative approach with a critical case study strategy, this research analyses how elements such as colour, light, music, and spiritual metaphors are combined with reflective emotional narratives to preserve the depth of Sufi teachings. Drawing on Stig Hjarvard’s perspective on the mediatization of Religion, the study examines how social media not only functions as a channel for message dissemination but also reshapes religious practices and experiences. The findings reveal that @Al.Amiin.id successfully utilises the logic of digital media—such as short duration, visual aesthetics, algorithms, and trends—as instruments to present Sufism in the form of personal and easily comprehensible micro-narratives. This strategy demonstrates that Sufi preaching undergoes a process of mediatization, in which spiritual values are not merely transmitted but also reconstructed to align with the consumption patterns and cultural sensibilities of digital generations. The study further emphasises that despite the risks of commodification and simplification, Sufi preaching on social media can still preserve its spiritual depth through adaptive approaches. This research contributes to the study of how religious practices are transformed by digital media, offering a model of Sufi preaching that is communicative, inclusive, and relevant in the era of algorithms.

Abstract

Abstract. Neo-Sufism, as a revitalized form of classical Sufism, offers a profound ethical and spiritual foundation that significantly enriches social welfare practices in Indonesia. This study aims to construct a theoretical framework that integrates Neo-Sufi values—such as compassion, justice, and spiritual devotion—into Muslim social work practice. Employing a qualitative literature review method, data were collected from credible academic sources indexed by Scopus and Web of Science and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that Neo-Sufism enhances social welfare practice by providing an ethical foundation, fostering community empowerment, strengthening personal resilience among social workers, and enriching social work education curricula. These results suggest that integrating Neo-Sufi values can significantly strengthen both the professionalism and spiritual development of Muslim social workers in Indonesia, while promoting a more holistic approach to community welfare. Abstract

Contemporary Islamic ecotheology has advanced environmental responsibility through institutional reform and ethical reinterpretation of classical principles such as khilāfa and amāna, yet it remains structurally limited by its predominant focus on behavioral compliance rather than the prior conditions of ecological perception. This study addresses that gap by developing Ecosufism as an analytically grounded framework that extends Islamic ecotheology toward a Sufi metaphysical account of the human-nature relationship. Drawing on hermeneutic analysis of classical Sufi sources alongside critical engagement with Nasr, Rosa, Latour, and Weber, the study operationalizes the Tawḥīd–Tazkiyya–‘Amal triad as a functional model specifying the mechanisms through which ontological awareness, ethical self-purification, and embodied ecological action constitute a coherent and sequential process of ecological consciousness. Indonesian cases, including the 2025 Ekoteologi Islam initiative, FNKSDA activism, and Neo-Sufi movements, illustrate the triad’s analytical range while revealing a consistent structural gap between the perceptual transformation Ecosufism prescribes and the institutional conditions required to sustain it at the collective scale. The study contributes an original analytical model that repositions ecological crisis as a problem of ontological perception within Islamic thought.
