Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this classroom action research was to know whetheror not snowball throwing strategy improve the reading comprehension of the second year students of MTS Al-Muslimun Sei-Kijang.The subjects of this research were27 second year students of MTS Al-Muslimun Sei Kijang. In this research, the data were collected through three ways: test, observation sheets, and field notes. The findings showed that the application of snowball throwing strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension in recount text. At the pre-test, the average score of students was59,85 and got improve after the treatment on the first cycle became 63,23 and improved at the secondcycle became 73,04. Based on the result of the research, English teachers are suggested to use snowball throwing strategy to improve students reading comprehension. Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research aimed to find out whether mind- mapping strategy can improve students’ writing ability in analytical exposition text and to find out to what extend mind mapping improve students’ writing ability in analytical exposition text. This research was conducted at MA Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru from March to October 2015. The number of participant was 31 students of XI social class. This research consisted of two cycles. The instruments of this research were writing test, observation sheet, and field note. The finding showed that the average score of pre- test was 56.88. It improved to 70.18 in the first post test and 78.75 in the second post test. Based on the improvement, it can be concluded that mind mapping strategy can improve the ability of the second year students of MA Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru in writing analytical exposition text. In addition, mind mapping strategy also improves students’ writing ability in all aspects of writing.Keywords: action research, writing ability, mind mapping, analytical exposition texts

Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of MTs Muhammadiyah 02 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. The research data were collected in August 2016. The subject of this research was class VIII-2 which consisted of 31 students. The data were collected by giving a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test. The test contained 25 items. Based on the research, it was found out that first: the ability of the second year students in reading comprehension is in the mediocre level with the mean score of 57.38. Second, the students’ mean score in finding the main idea is in good level with the mean score of 78.70, finding the factual information is in good level with the mean score of 65.80, in finding the meaning of vocabulary is in poor level with the mean score of 39.35, in finding references is in mediocre level with the mean score of 44.51, in finding inference is in mediocre level with the mean score of 56.12, in finding generic structure is in mediocre level with the mean score of 60, in finding language features is in mediocre level with the mean score of 60.64. As a conclusion, the highest score obtained by the students is in finding main ideas with the mean score of 78.70 which is categorized into good level, and the lowest score that the students got is in finding the meaning of vocabulary ,with the mean score of 39.35 which is categorized into poor level.Key Words: Study, Ability, Comprehending, Descriptive Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This was an action research which conducted at SMPN 6 Tambang and started on April 2014 and ended on June 2014. The subject of this research was the first year students of SMPN 6 Tambang, particularly VII 1 consisted 22 students. The specific objective of this research is to know whether or not the use of two-stay-two-stray method can improve the students’ speaking ability and to know the factors cause the improvement. Besides, the researcher asked the collaborator to observe the process of the teaching and learning process by using the observation sheets prepared by the research. There were two kinds of research instruments used in this research which were test and observation. The test was used to collect the quantitative data and the observation sheet was used to collect the qualitative data.After accomplishing this research, the researcher concludes that the use of two-stay-two-stray method can improve the students’ speaking ability. It was clearly proven by the improvement in average score of the student from 45,45 (Pre-test) up to 62,85 (Post – test 1), then up to 78,36 (post-test 2). Moreover, based on the qualitative data that collected by the observer, the dominant factors caused the improvement of the students ability in speaking ability is the activeness of the students. Furthermore, by implementing two-stay-two-stray method, the students’behavior changed gradually from the ‘teacher-centered’ learning to ‘students-centered’ learning because they were allowed to work in group and help each other. In addition, this method also influenced the students to be more active while studying with two-stay-two-stray since they were free to express their idea about the text. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of two-stay-two-stray method could improve the students’ speaking ability. Keywords :  Speaking ability, Two-Stay-Two-Stray method

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed to describe the level of the students’ ability at English Study Program of FKIP of University of Riau in determining theme and plot in reading short stories. The design of this research is descriptive research, which has one variable to observe. This research used quantitative data, where the students were assessed by their score. To determine the sample, this research used cluster random sampling technique. The population of this research was the sixth semester students of English study program of FKIP of Riau University in the academic year 2016/2017. The total number of population was 70 students. There were 25 sixth semester students chosen as the samples of this research. The instruments of the research were 30 multiple choice questions. In collecting the data this research used written test. There were 10 questions given to the students in each short stories and had to be done in 90 minutes. All of the short stories are taken from a number of short stories. Based on the result of the research, there was 1 student (4%) in excellent ability level, 6 students (24%) who were in good ability level, 13 students (52%) who were in mediocre level. Then, there were 3 students (12%) who were in poor level and 2 students (8%) who were in very poor level. In other words, the sixth semester students of English study program of FKIP of University of Riau ability level are categorized in mediocre level. Moreover, from the result found, the students’ ability is in mediocre level with the mean score 53.54.Key words: student, ability, short story, theme, plot

Abstract

Abstract:This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the first year students of SMAN 3Pekanbaru in writing procedure texts. The research data were collected in September 2016. The subject of this research was class X IPA 4 which consisted of 32 students. The data were collected by giving a writing test to the students.Based on the research, it was found out that first: the ability of the first year students in writing procedure texts is in good level with the mean score of 63.00. Second, the students’ mean score in terms of grammar is in moderate level with the mean score of 49.17, in terms of organization is in good level with the mean score of 78.75, in terms of mechanic is in good level with the mean score of 61.45, in terms of vocabulary is in moderate level with the mean score of 48.33, in terms of fluency is in good level with the mean score of79.37. As a conclusion, the highest score obtained by the students is in terms of fluency with the mean score of 79.37 which is categorized into good level, and the lowest score that the students got is in terms of vocabulary the mean score of 48.33 which is categorized into moderate level. English teacher may develop the students’ motivation and encourage them to learn more about procedure texts as a practice of writing procedure texts in order to make the students familiar with writing materials. For next researcher, the writer suggests that to conduct other research in this school.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the significant of the correlation between reading motivation and reading comprehension. The aim was to find out the correlation between students’ reading motivation and students’ reading comprehension. This Correlation research took place in SMK Taruna Satria Pekanbaru in July 2015. The sample was 36 students from First Year students that took by using cluster random sampling. In collecting the data, there were 30 questions that included in this test. The duration time for doing the test was 90 minutes. The data was analyzed by calculating the students’ score in reading motivation, finding out the reading comprehension score and correlating the two variables. The students’ score classified into three level of students’ reading motivation; they are: Low, Moderate, and High. Besides, the students’ score classified into five level mastery of Reading Comprehension; they are: very poor, poor, mediocre, good, and excellent. The data was presented by using graphic. Based on the result finding of this research, the coefficient correlation ( obtained was 0,424. Therefore, it answered the research that there was a relationship between reading motivation and reading comprehension in moderate level. For more details, the correlation of intrinsic motivation and reading comprehension is significant in 0,016 by the coefficient correlation 0,399 that considered as low correlation. In another side, the correlation of extrinsic motivation and reading comprehension is significant in 0,000 by the coefficient correlation 0,599 that considered as moderate correlation. It can be concluded that based on the data that was analyzed, the students reading extrinsic motivation influence the students’ comprehension more than the intrinsic motivation. In other words, the contribution of reading motivation towards reading comprehension significant enough for the first year students of SMK Taruna Satria Pekanbaru. Another result from the students perception about the teacher’s teaching method as extrinsic motivation factor found out that they are more motivated if the teacher teaches them by speech as one of the stages of inquiry based learning than teacher teaching by group discussion and questioning. Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the first year students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru in writing recount text .The participants were 34 students. The data was collected by using writing tests. The students were given four topics and they were asked to choose only one. The research finding indicated that the students were capable in writing recount text although they still had difficulty in writing recount text based on the topic given. The result of test showed the average score of students writing ability was 60.27. It showed that the students were in average to good level and it means that the writing recount text based on the topic given was not too difficult for the students.Keywords:Recount Text, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstrack: This Classroom Action Reserach (CAR) to find the mastery of the second year students at SMP Tuah Negeri Pekanbaru in using picture. The aims at this research to increase vocabulary mastery using pictures in comprehending descriptive text of the second year students. This research was conducted in two cycles that consisted of four meeting in each cycle. This research was conducted to overcome the existing problem on the field as well as to described and to explain whether the pictures media could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The result of this research average score in pre-test is 49, average scores in cycle 1 is 67 and average scores in cycle 2 is 72. The result of this research indicated that the pictures media could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. It was also found that; The selection of appropriated pictures media; The application of pictures; The management activities of the class & practiced; and teacher support can increase students motivation in vocabulary mastery in comprehending descriptive text.Key Words: Improve, Vocabulary Mastery,and Picture

Abstract

Abstract: This one shot pre-test post-test design was aimedto find out the effects of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)method towards the ability of the first year students of SMA N 10Pekanbaru in comprehending text. This study answered thefollowing research question:”is there any significant effect DRTAmethod to reading comprehension achievement of the first yearstudents of SMA N 10 Pekanbaru in comprehending text?”Theparticipants were 36 students of the first year students of SMANegeri 10 Pekanbaru. The time of this research was on academic2014-2015, from august - October at SMA N 10 Pekanbaru. Thisschool is located on St.bukitbarisan, Pekanbaru. The data wascollected by using pre-test and post-test. The data was analyzed byusing SPSS Aplication. The research finding of this research showedthat there is significant effect of Directed Reading Thinking Activitytowards the ability of the first year students of SMA N 10 Pekanbaruin comprehending reading text.the finding also proved that in thepre-test students’ average score was 6.82 and after the treatmentapplied there is contribution in post-test score 0.74.Keywords: Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA), Comprehending Reading Text,one shot pre-test post-test design.
