Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at discovering the correlation between the second year students’ critical thinking disposition and their ability in writing analytical exposition texts at MAN 1 Pekanbaru. The problem needs to be addressed in this research is : is there any significant correlation between MAN 1 Pekanbaru second year students’ critical thinking disposition and their ability in writing analytical exposition texts The research data were collected in April 2017. The population of this research was 301 second year students of MAN 1 Pekanbaru. The cluster random sampling technique was applied to determine the sample. The sample of this research is class 31 students of XI MIA 3. The data were collected by using two kinds of instruments in the form of a questionnaire and a writing test which are assessed by using Product Moment’s formula that are analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 Statistic Program. Based on the data analysis, it shows that there is a significant and positive correlation between MAN 1 Pekanbaru second year students’ critical thinking disposition and their ability in writing analytical exposition texts. The correlation is categorized as moderate level. This study suggests the teacher to promote critical thinking in English classrooms. The implication of the finding is that the students should increase their disposition towards critical thinking to improve their writing.Keywords: Correlation, Critical Thinking Disposition, Writing, Analytical Exposition

Abstract

Abstract. This paper was aimed at finding out to what extent reciprocal teaching could improve the ability of the first year students of SMA Negeri 2 Tandun, Rokan Hulu, Riau in comprehending narrative texts. The participants of this research were 32 students of the first year students of SMA Negeri 2 Tandun, Rokan Hulu, Riau. This research was conducted in 2 cycles. The data were collected through (1)observation sheet which was applied to know the students’ activities during teaching and learning process, (2) objective test was done to measures students’ achievement, and (3) field note was done to obtain information about teacher, the students’ activities and teacher’s performance during the implementation of reciprocal teaching. The research findings can be briefly explained as follows; firstly, the students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts could be improved by using reciprocal teaching. Before the research was done, the mean score of students’ pre-test was 60.94, up to 68.02 in the post-test 1, and up again to 75.21 in the post-test 2. After the research has done for cycle 1, the mean score of students’ reading ability was 68.02. In the cycle 2, it increased up to 75.21. Secondly, the students’ activeness increased from cycle 1 to cycle 2. This improvement happened because this reading comprehension strategy was appropriate to be implemented to the class.Keyword : Reciprocal Teaching, Reading, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract : This correlation research is aimed to find out the correlation of the students motivation with reading comprehension of the second year students of MAN 1 Pekanbaru. The research data were collected from July to August 2016. The subject of this research was class XI IPA 3, which consist of 30 students. The data were collected by giving a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test and questionnaire about motivation. The result of the research showed that the second year students of Man 1 Pekanbaru got mediocre level with the mean score of 49,67 in reading comprehension and enough category (67,8) in the students questionnaire of motivation. Therefore, it can be concluded that the correlation of the second year students of MAN 1 Pekanbaru in motivation and reading comprehension is high with rxy is 0,72.Key Words: Correlation, Motivation, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research was to find out if the community language learning method could improve students’ speaking ability of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru.The participants were 30 students. The data was collected by using observation sheets, speaking tests, and field notes. The test was used to collect the quantitative data and the observation sheets were used to collect the qualitative data. After accomplishing this research, the writer concludes that the use of CLL method in speaking recount text can improve the students’ speaking ability. The result of pre-test shows the average score of students speaking ability was 45.5. It improved to 67,7 on the post-test 1 and 76,7 on the post-test 2. It was also proved that that the use Community Language Learning could improve the students’ behavior in learning especially in speaking ability. They are more active and have a great motivation during the process of teaching and learning since they are free to explore their idea and share to their friends. In addition, applying story telling technique could also improve students’ ability to speak English in terms of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the second year students’ ability of Bina Insan Vocational High School Siak Hulu in comprehending recount texts. This research focuses on finding factual information, finding main ideas, locating the meaning of vocabulary in context, identifying references, and making inferences based on recount texts. Data were collected using reading comprehension test with multiple choice type. The test contained 30 items. The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. The research findings are as follows: first, the ability of the students in comprehending recount texts is 51 which is in mediocre level. Second, the students’ mean score in finding factual information is 60, the mean score in finding main ideas is 41, the mean score in locating the meaning of vocabulary in context is 69, the mean score in identifying references is 68, and the mean score in making inferences is 68. The highest score obtained by the students is in finding the meaning of vocabulary in context that falls into good ability level, and the lowest score that the students get is in finding main ideas that falls into mediocre ability level.
