Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the second year students’ ability of Bina Insan Vocational High School Siak Hulu in comprehending recount texts. This research focuses on finding factual information, finding main ideas, locating the meaning of vocabulary in context, identifying references, and making inferences based on recount texts. Data were collected using reading comprehension test with multiple choice type. The test contained 30 items. The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. The research findings are as follows: first, the ability of the students in comprehending recount texts is 51 which is in mediocre level. Second, the students’ mean score in finding factual information is 60, the mean score in finding main ideas is 41, the mean score in locating the meaning of vocabulary in context is 69, the mean score in identifying references is 68, and the mean score in making inferences is 68. The highest score obtained by the students is in finding the meaning of vocabulary in context that falls into good ability level, and the lowest score that the students get is in finding main ideas that falls into mediocre ability level. Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the ambiguities found in news titles of The Jakarta Post, focusing only on two kind of ambiguities, Lexical Ambiguity and Structural Ambiguity. The objectives of this study are: 1) To analyze the lexical ambiguity news titles found in The Jakarta Post newspaper and the interpretations which may arise. 2) To analyze the structural ambiguity news titles found in The Jakarta Post newspaper and the interpretations which may arise. 3) To describe the cause of ambiguous titles at the Jakarta Post Newspaper. 4) To analyze the implication of ambiguity in translation teaching. The data for this study were taken from The Jakarta Post news titles from February 1 to February 5, 2018. It is a descriptive qualitative study that analyzes the data in the form of words, phrases and sentences descriptively. Based on these research findings, there were 14 ambiguities found. They consisted of seven lexical ambiguities, which are five functioned as nouns and two as verbs. Seven titles were categorized as structurally ambiguous. The causes of lexical ambiguities in news titles are polysemy and homonymy, while the causes of structural ambiguities are equivocal phrasing and contextual ambiguity. This implies that understanding ambiguity, especially lexical and structural ambiguity, can affect  the students’ translation ability.

Abstract

Conversation is the work of people to interact each other using language. Allthough all people do a conversation everyday, but in fact not all people know what aspects that exist when they are doing the conversation. If people really understand those aspects it will make the conversation become meaningfull and effetive. The research focuses on 3 aspects of conversation, those are turn-taking, adjency pairs and sequence. The main data of the research is a script of Madagascar 3:Europes’ most wanted. This movie was choosen because the language used in this movie represent the way people do conversation in daily life and has theme about friendship for help each other to reach a goal. This research used descriptive qualitative method to analyzed the data based on theory by Jhoan Cutting about Conversation Analysis. The data were video and script. Duration of this movie was 01..33.25 hour. The researcher analyzed all utterances from all dialogues used by all characters in the movie. The result of this reseacrh showed that there were 92 data of pattern of Conversation Analysis; 4 turn taking, 9 interruption, 17 overlap, 4 attributable silent, 34 preferred response, 19 disreferred response. Most dominant data is preferred response form aspect adjency pairs. A lot of response given by the hearer agreeable with what is desired by the speaker.

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate teachers' perspectives on the utilization of teaching media in English classrooms at Madrasah Alyah Diniah Putri. The method used in this study was qualitative method. The participants were 10 English teachers from Madrasah Alyah Diniah Putri. The data for this study was collected by using questionnaire which consisted of 15 items. The data analysis used analytical model proposed by (Miles, M. B., Huberman, A. M., & Saldana, J., 2013). The research explored the significances of English teaching media, the criteria for appropriateness, commonly used types of media, obstacles in implementation, and the process of creating teaching media based on student needs. Findings revealed that teachers acknowledge the crucial role of media in facilitating effective learning experiences, emphasizing interactivity, practicality, and alignment with students' characteristics. WhatsApp Group emerges as the dominant medium, though challenges in facilities, resources, and technical aspects are evident. Adaptability of teachers and students in overcoming obstacles is noted. The study underscores the importance of needs analysis and learning objectives in creating tailored teaching media. Overall, the research provides insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers, guiding effective practices in integrating teaching media into English language classrooms. Abstract

Tujuan pengabdian kepada masyarakat adalah melatih siswa-siswi maupun guru-guru SMK Hasanah Pekanbaru dalam penggunaan Aplikasi Duolingo dalam meningkatkan kemampuan kosakata bahasa Inggris. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat di SMK Hasanah Pekanbaru adalah adalah metode presentasi, demo penggunaan aplikasi dan sesi tanya jawab. Adapun rangkaian kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini diantaranya: (1) mendengarkan dan melihat penjelasan melalui powerpoint oleh narasumber, (2) disaat sesi penjelasan ini, akan dijelaskan definisi hingga penggunaan aplikasi Duolingo, (3) dilanjutkan dengan sesi tanya-jawab, (4) setelah sesi Q&A sebagian siswa dipilih untuk mencoba aplikasi duolingo sembari diperhatikan oleh peserta lainnya, (5) Kemudian aplikasi dapat diunduh di komputer maupun di handphone, (6) Aplikasi Duolingo bisa digunakan di kelas maupun diluar kelas. Pengabdian direncanakan akan dilaksanakan di SMK Hasanah Pekanbaru. Subjek dari PKM ini adalah siswa-siswi serta guru-guru bahasa dengan waktu pembelajaran selama 3 jam pelajaran.

Abstract

English is an important language in the era of globalization. This article discusses the educational use of Memrise, an English language learning application, to improve the English language skills of Bina Insan Siak Hulu Vocational School students. Educational activities include counselling about the importance of English and an introduction to the Memrise application. The method used is the lecture method to convey the material. The results show that students know the importance of learning English, students understand the features and how to use the Memrise application. It is hoped that by studying and using the Memrise application students' English language skills can improve.

Abstract

This community service activity is a service which explains and teaches how to use an electronic English dictionary application from free to paid. The targets of this service are teachers and students of MTS Diniyah Putri. The method used in carrying out this community service is the method of preparation, implementation and monitoring of what has been explained to find out how far the PKM participants understand the use of the English electronic dictionary application This. This application media can be one of the media that can increase motivation so that learning English becomes more effective and efficient so that the results obtained are maximized.

Abstract

Learning English at the vocational school level requires the right approach to facilitate students in understanding various types of texts, including descriptive texts. One approach that has been widely used is the group learning method. This study aims to explore the application of group learning methods to descriptive text material in English language learning at SMK Bina Profesi Pekanbaru. The research method used was classroom action research (PTK) which was carried out in several stages. The subjects in this research were 27 class X Accounting students consisting of 22 female students and 5 male students. The data collection technique was carried out by direct observation during the teaching process of Class X Accounting which took place in several meetings. Through conducting observations with English teachers, the implementation of learning can be improved by utilizing discussion and observation methods with students. The results of the research show that the application of the group learning method makes a positive contribution to students' understanding of Descriptive Text material. This research suggests that group learning strategies are good for use in the learning process. This can be seen from the results of the observation sheet before and after the implementation of each stage, namely aspects of student activity, student skills, student enthusiasm and increased student interest. In this case, it also makes students more enthusiastic about carrying out learning activities and makes teachers more creative, conducive learning activities are also achieved by implementing Group Method Learning.

Abstract

Learning media is one aspect of increasing the success of learning. Using creative and interesting learning media will certainly make it easier for students to accept lessons. Kahoot! is a learning media in the form of a game that can be accessed on the website. The purpose of this outreach is to see whether the learning media Kahoot! useful for increasing students' interest in adding vocabulary. The methods used in carrying out this socialization are lecture methods, application use demos and question and answer sessions. The series of socialization activities include: (1) Students do practice questions regarding vocabulary manually (without game teaching media) (2) Then go to the step of providing an explanation about the Kahoot! learning application! (3) During this explanation session students will be explained the steps for using the Kahoot! application, (4) Followed by a question and answer session, (5) After the question and answer session several students are selected to come forward to try the Kahoot! (6) Students download the Kahoot! on their smartphone/laptop and work on the questions given. (7) Students do practice questions regarding vocabulary in the Kahoot! application. This socialization was carried out at the Pekanbaru Professional Development Vocational School. The subjects of this socialization are students of class X Tourism Travel Business with a learning time of 2 hours.

Abstract

The use of technology-based learning media is believed to increase effectiveness and attractiveness in the learning process. One of the potential media to be implemented is Wordwall, an interactive platform that provides various types of educational games to support learning. This activity aims to increase student motivation and cooperation through the application of Wordwall media in mathematics learning, especially in arithmetic function material at SMPN 1 Pekanbaru. The method used in this activity consists of two stages, namely the preparation stage and the learning stage. In the preparation stage, the team designs activities and prepares teaching materials. Furthermore, in the learning stage, Wordwall media is applied in the learning process, including through interactive quizzes that actively involve students. The results of the activity show that the use of Wordwall can increase student involvement in learning, as well as create a more interactive and enjoyable learning atmosphere. Thus, Wordwall media can be an effective alternative in increasing student motivation and learning outcomes.
