Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the significant effect of PORPE Method in comprehending narrative reading text of the tenth grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. The selected sample was X OTKP 1. The sample was selected by using random sampling technique. This research used pre-experimental research design for one group pre-test post-test and collected the data by using test on narrative text. The test this research was multiple choice test consisted of four option (A/B/C/D) The result of the study was found that the mean score of the pre-test was 68.64 while the post-test was 75.61 Therefore it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of PORPE Method in comprehending narrative reading text of the tenth grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect in students’ achievement before and after being thought by PORPE Method. It can be stated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In conclusion, teachers are suggested to use PORPE Method as one of the alternative method in improving students’ reading comprehension especially in comprehending narrative texts.    Key Words: Effect, PORPE method, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research is a descriptive-quantitative research design which is aimed to find out the Vocabulary Level of the third year Natural Science and Social Science Students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru. The subjects of this study were the third year Natural Science and Social Science Students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru. 244 students taking part in this study were given The New Vocabulary Level Test (NVLT) by Webb et al., (2017). The findings of this study revealed that the student vocabulary level as follows the mean score result, the study shows that the Natural science students have reached the requirement for the 1000 and 2000 vocabulary level of Depdiknas RI (2004). It requires that the categories middle level readers (high school) must acquire 1500-3000 family words. Even though for the 3000 vocabulary level, they have not reached the threshold yet. While for the Social Science students, they reach half of the 1000 vocabulary level. While most of them got scores in 12 or 1200 vocabulary words and 9 or 900 vocabulary in the 2000 and 3000 vocabulary level. Based on this study, the students should be focused to learn high frequency vocabulary. As Webb (2017) stated that the high frequency vocabulary will give a bigger impact for the students. Since the high frequency vocabulary accounts for a large percentage of English, it provides a foundation for further lexical and language development for the students.Key Words: Vocabulary, Vocabulary Level Test, Natural science students and Social Sciencestudents.

Abstract

Absract: This research aimed to find out if there is a significant effect of using PQ4R strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. This research took place in MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru, which was collected from February to March 2020. The try out class was VIIITQA2 class (19 students) and the sample was VIIIA3 (32 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. This is a pre-experimental research with one group pretest and posttest design. This research used quantitative data and the instrument used to collect the data was a reading test in multiple choice forms. As the result, the mean score of pre-test is 59.03 and post-test is 62.97. In the other words, the mean score of post-test is higher than the mean score of pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test (8.907) is higher than t-table (3.365) at the significance level 0.1%. It means that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using PQ4R strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. It is suggested that in understanding recount text is one of alternatives, the teacher needs to focus on the students’ understanding of the sentences on the texts.Key Words: Effect, Reading Comprehension, PQ4R Strategy

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out whether there was a significant correlation between the frequency of watching English movies and vocabulary mastery of the fourth-semester students of the English study program of FKIP of Universitas Riau. The sample of this research consisted of 35 students selected by random sampling technique. The instruments of the research were a questionnaire and a vocabulary test. The data were collected through a questionnaire to know the frequency of watching English movies and a test to measure students’ vocabulary mastery. The test was used to assess students’ vocabulary mastery.The research findings showed that the frequency of watching English movies of the fourth-semester students of FKIP of Universitas Riau is categorized into average level. The vocabulary mastery of the fourth-semester students of FKIP of Universitas Riau is categorized into mediocre level. Pearson Product Moment Correlation method was used to correlate both the frequency of watching English movies (X) and vocabulary mastery (Y). The result showed that there was a significant correlation (0.694) between the frequency of watching English movies and students’ vocabulary mastery. It can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between the frequency of watching English movies and vocabulary mastery of the fourth-semester students of the English study program of FKIP of Universitas Riau.Key Words: Correlation, English Movies, Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is a descriptive-quantitative research design which is aimed at investigating the difficulties of second semester students’ English Education Study Program at Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Riau in pronouncing English vowel. The subjects of this study were the second semester students’ English Education Study Program at Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Riau. 32 students employed in this study were given the Pronounciation Test. The findings of this study revealed that the student knew about their difficulties in pronouncing English vowel. This result showed that the participants had good pronounciation skill. Based on this research the mean score of second semester students of English Education Study Program at Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Universitas Riau were good.Key Words: Pronounciation, English Vowel, English Education Sudy Program.

Abstract

The role of speaking skill as one of the basic skills of mastering English is important to be given special attention, especially for EFL Students. The popularity of ELSA Speak as an application that is widely used to help improve speaking skills has led to a lot of research on the application. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research with the systematic literature review method to find strong evidence about the impacts of using ELSA Speak for ELF students’ speaking skill. The systematic literature review method process consists of defining the research question, implementing a search strategy, collecting data, reporting results with PRISMA flow diagram, assessing quality, and analyzing the results by narrative synthesis. As a result, the study found 7 studies that were in accordance with the eligibility criteria to be analyzed in depth. All studies show an increase in the use of ELSA Speak from various levels of education of EFL students (Junior High School, Senior High School, and University).  This application has been proven to be effective in improving pronunciation, fluency in speaking, grammatical structure, vocabulary mastery, and students' confidence in conveying ideas orally in English.
