Abstract

Abstract

Barringtonia asiatica, a marine plant belonging to the Lecythidaceae family, exhibits bioactivity in all parts of the plant. In the Simeulue region, the seeds of this plant are used for fish trapping. The polar extracts of B. asiatica seeds has shown antibacterial activity, but the non-polar extracts has not been studied yet. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the secondary metabolites of B. asiatica using a non-polar solvent (n-hexane) and evaluate its activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The extraction method employed using soxhlet extraction, and the antibacterial activity was determined using the Kirby-Bauer method. The presence of secondary metabolites in the B. asiatica seed extract was assessed using phytochemical tests, and its chemical composition was analyzed using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS). The yield of n-hexane extract from B. asiatica seeds was 1.7%, and the phytochemical analysis revealed that the B. asiatica seeds n-hexane extract contains only terpenoids compounds. The B. asistica seeds n-hexane extract at concentration of 10% (w/v) showed the highest zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus (9.3 mm) followed by Escherichia coli (9,9 mm). The GC-MS analysis showed that B. asiatica seeds n-hexane extract contains Guaiene, Guaiene, Ledene, 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid, and Ethyl linoleate. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that B. asiatica seed's n-hexane extract exhibited antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli.

Abstract

Global warming has an impact on the decline in the quality of human life, as a result of the decline in the quality of the environment. To prevent and overcome these problems, an effort is needed, one of which is to produce an environmentally friendly product. Investment in environmentally friendly products is becoming an interesting trend as an effort to develop and use environmentally friendly products, one of which is green souvenirs. Green souvenirs can be a product solution to promote an environmentally friendly lifestyle with innovative products that come from the waste of daily living activities. One of them is used cooking oil. This product-based community service activity was carried out in Kayee Lee, Aceh Besar. This activity aims to produce green souvenir products. Education and promotion of environmentally friendly lifestyles for the community contribute to improving the quality of the environment. Activities that have been carried out in the form of socialization, and technical training in the process of making green souvenirs. The results of the service of the partner group have an understanding of the benefits of processing used cooking oil into green souvenirs. The training activities that have been carried out have produced green souvenir products in very varied shapes, colors, and motifs with an attractive appearance so that they are economically viable. Green souvenir product motifs can be customized for events such as seminars, graduations, birthdays, weddings, and decorative or household purposes. Green souvenir products that are expected to open up opportunities for business partners to increase family income also contribute to the environment and health.

Abstract

Vitamin E is found naturally in some foods, and also available as a dietary supplement. "Vitamin E" is the fat-soluble compounds with distinctive antioxidant activities. The vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, which protects cell membranes. Sterinernema feltieae was selected as a test organism is because this organism is a complex organism and can be used as a model for whole organisms. The objective of this study is to evaluate the activity of vitamin E and its derivatives on Sterinernema feltieae. The results showed that the derivative of vitamin E (C37H55NO3) was most active against S. feltiae with the LD50 value was 207.77 M, followed by vitamin E (C29H50O2) with the LD50 value was 209.09 M. These results indicated that derivative of vitamin E (C37H55NO3) exerts more potent toxicity than vitamin E against Sterinernema feltieae.

Abstract

Endophytic fungi, which reside within plant tissues, offer a unique ecological perspective due to their mutually beneficial relationship with host plants. Soursop (Annona muricata L.) leaves, known for their medicinal properties, contain bioactive compounds that may be produced by endophytic fungi. This study aimed to isolate endophytic fungi from soursop leaves and evaluate their potential as antimicrobial compound producers. Twenty endophytic fungal isolates were obtained from soursop leaves using Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) supplemented with leaf extract. Out of these isolates, eight demonstrated antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms. Notably, the extract produced by SLE16 exhibited inhibitory effects against Gram-negative bacteria, while isolates SLE7, SLE8, and SLE14 showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans. Furthermore, isolates SLE18, SLE19, and SLE20 displayed significant inhibition of Trichophyton rubrum growth. The extracellular extracts derived from these endophytic fungi exhibited hydrophilic properties and formed inhibition zones larger than 15 mm, indicating their potential as antimicrobial compounds. These findings highlight the potential of endophytic fungi isolated from soursop leaves as valuable sources of novel antimicrobial compounds
