Abstract

This research discusses the typology of violence in the short stories “Penguburan Kembali Sitaresmi”, “Jemari Nayla”, and “Leteh” by using Johan Galtung’s concept. The analysis also employs an intersectional approach to reveal the social categories that enable violence and to compare the violence across the three short stories. This research shows several findings. Firstly, in the first short story, direct violence (murder) and structural violence (marginalization) occur. In the second story, there is direct violence (sexual harassment) and structural violence (marginalization). In the third story, structural violence (stigmatization) is prevalent. Secondly, all three stories depict violence against women, but they also exhibit distinct patterns. Similarities and differences are based on criteria such as the victims, perpetrators, forms, and causes of violence, as seen in Table 2. Thirdly, the research finds that these short stories emerged during a time when past violations of women's rights remained unresolved and the state failed to take responsibility, while simultaneously, violence against women continued to escalate.

Abstract

The Official Selection World Cinema Amsterdam Award in 2019, given to the film "Tilik" opened the public's eyes to the fact that even a short film can convey a moral message as powerfully as a feature-length film. It does not matter that short films have more limitations than long ones. This phenomenon encourages short film script writing assistance as a community service activity. Saba Exploit (SE) SMAN 1 Bantul DIY was designated as the target for assistance because of its potential and impressive track record in making short films. Given the uneven transmission of knowledge and skills between generations, assistance is needed so that they have collective quality skills and skills, standardized guidelines for writing film scripts, and complete documentation so they can be developed across generations. Mentoring activities present speakers who present material presentations, best practices, and evaluations of films made by SE. The post-assistance evaluation stated that the curiosity of the SE community was accomplished. Hereafter, it was hoped that SE's hard skills, soft skills, and insights in creating short films would earn higher quality based on solid, focused, and expressive film script writing.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the articulation of humanism in Di Bawah Langit Tak Berbintang and Laut Bercerita. From the preliminary reading, humanism is the most apparent theme in the story structure, thus it needs to be further explored. A Bakhtian-style dialogic perspective and narratological analysis methods are used. There are several research results. First, Di Bawah Langit and Laut Bercerita relatively have the same stylistic diversity in terms of the presence of the author’s voice through the narrator, the stylization of everyday narratives (the experience of being an exile in China and student activism during the New Order era), extraliterary forms (the speech of the Biru Laut character to Asmara Jati, although he is dead), philological-scientific statements (ethnographic description of Cianjur, historical information about the G 30S PKI, moral statements about the nature of learning, the Kamisan action, and the violence in May 1998), as well as speeches between characters that show conflict and collective interaction. Second, the stylistic diversity shows the differences between the two works. In Di Bawah Langit, humanism is oriented toward individual interests so that individualist humanism is formed, only including Utuy himself. In contrast, in Laut Bercerita, humanism focuses on community relations, the nation-state, and the memory of the May 1998 violence in Indonesia. This shows that the two novels have different orientations, between individual and collective. By operating Bakhtin's theory in a comparative manner on two Indonesian novels, this research demonstrates that humanism is voiced not through a singular way, but rather in a plural manner. This can be further explored to reveal the diversity of humanistic voices in Indonesian novels.

Abstract

Chit-chat is a socio-cultural phenomenon ethnographically embedded in Indonesian society's culture, also discursively presented in literary works, namely the short story "Basa-Basi" by Yohanes Prananto. This research aims to outline a BIPA learning design based on literary works to understand the phenomenon of chit-chat. Methodologically, this research uses the literature study, development, and retrospection. This research finds that literary works can be applied to listening-reading, speaking, writing, and Indonesian insight skills. The short story “Basa-Basi” is presented as reading material for students. It is classified as a simple literary work because the degree of structural complexity is not that high. So, it is considered appropriate for advanced students 1. In speaking skills, students are asked to express their ideas about the substance of the short story in general and specifically about the chit-chat. Through this short story, students receive Indonesian insights and cross-cultural comparisons. After that, students are asked to compare it with equivalent phenomena in their countries of origin. The results of this comparison are applied to narrative writing skills of 300-500 words. The procedure is derived from a pragmatic approach for BIPA teaching, which situates language learning within its context. Through literature-based BIPA learning, with the formulated approach, design, and procedures, this research underlines that the use of literary works enables learners to not only learn the language but also understand the socio-cultural phenomena within the community of the language speakers.
