Abstract

TITLEOral pemphigus vulgaris associated herpes simplex virus infection (case report)ABSTRACTPemphigus Vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune mucocutaneous disease characterized by intraepithelial blister formation, which develops due to the interaction between predisposing genetic and environmental factors. Infections caused by members of the Herpesviridae family have been suggested as a possible triggering factor for PV. The purpose of this case report was to describe the case of a patient who has developed PV after showing herpetic infection, which refractory to corticosteroid therapy. A 49-year old-woman suffered from extensive multiple painful erosions/ulcers of the mouth. The lesions started on the buccal mucosa which subsequently involved the entired mouth. Histopathologic examination was suggestive of PV. The lesions developed concurrently with high titers of anti-HSV antibodies. These patient was treated with oral and topical corticosteroid, but showed incomplete remission. The titers of anti-HSV have followed the PV activity, reducing with the remission of the disease. Two months later, patient developed exacerbation of the lesions, following the return of high titers of anti-HSV IgG.The treatment with acyclovir has succeeded and all lesions have been completely healed. This case indicated that the lesions of PV which are refractory to corticosteroid therapy, should be considered to herpetic infection.                                                                              Keywords : Oral pemphigus vulgaris, herpes simplex infection, autoimmune, corticosteroids

Abstract

Smoking is one of the periodontal risk factors. Nicotin in cigarettes alters the immune response system and blood vessels in the dental tissue. Tar in cigarettes facilitates the accumulation of plaque. This combination causes periodontal tissue damage. The aim of study is to know the relationship of smoking and periodontal health status. This study was cross sectional study involved 80 smokers who were selected based on simple random sampling. This study used Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Data was analyzed using Chi-Square. The result showed that none of respondents with healthy periodontal health status. Smokers with duration of smoking <10 years, amount of smoking <20 rods/day and white cigarette smokers showed moderate periodontal health status. Smokers with duration of smoking >10 years, amount of smoking  >20 rods/day and kretek cigarette smokers showed poor periodontal health status. The conclusion of this study are significant relationship between amount of cigarette (p=0,000), duration of smoking (p=0,000, type of cigarette(p=0,006) and periodontal health status.

Abstract

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a gram-negative anaerobic bacteria which is an oral normal microflora located in subgingival area. This bacteria can cause inflamation and delayed wound healing after dental invasive procedures. Lidocaine 2% and articaine 4% are the most used anaesthetic agents in dentistry. Both of these agents have been studied for having antibacterial effect in certain concentrations. This will open the possibility of using local anaesthetic agents as antibacterial agent in dental invasive procedures to prevent infection after procedures. The purpose of this study is to analyze the difference inhibition of local anaesthetics drug lidocaine 2% and articaine 4% on the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria in vitro. The study subject was pure culture of Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277 divided by two group, one group with lidocaine 2% and other with articaine 4%. This study was experimental laboratory with post test only control group design. The mean of inhibitions were obtained by measuring inhibition zone formed around paper discs with caliper in milimeter scale. The result showed Inhibition rate lidocaine 2% had greater rate than articaine 4% in inhibiting the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria in vitro. The conclusion was lidocaine 2% was more effective than articaine 4% in inhibiting the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria in vitro.

Abstract

Halitosis is a general term used to describe the bad breath coming out of the oral cavity. Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) are a major component causes of halitosis, formed from the break down of protein substrate by gram-negative anaerobes such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tanerella forsythia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia and Treponema denticola. Guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) contain high levels of quercetin compounds that can inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of 5% guava leaf (Psidium guajava linn) extract of white fruit variant to decrease levels of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) in halitosis sufferers. This research method was pre-experimental which consists of 19 subjects. The guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) extract was made by maceration method and diluted with distiled water at 5% concentration. The levels of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) were measured by breath checker before (pre test) and after (post test) treatment. Wilcoxon test showed that there was a significant difference between the levels of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) before and after gargling with 5% guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) extract of white fruit variant (p<0,05). The conclusion of this research was 5% guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) extract of white fruit variant effectively decreases levels of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) in halitosis sufferers.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Composite resin is the most commonly used restorative material. One type of composite resin based on the filler material is a nanohybrid composite resin which has the advantage of good strength and smooth surface to produce good improvements in terms of durability and aesthetics. The roughness of the resin can be affected by drinks with low pHs, such as isotonic drink. Glycerin can reduce the roughness of the composite resin by acting as a barrier so that an oxygen inhibition layer (OIL) is not formed. Purpose: This study is to determine the effect of glycerin application on the roughness of nanohybrid composite resin immersed in an isotonic drink. Method: A total of 32 samples of nanohybrid composite resin used in this study were made with a diameter of 5 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. The nanohybrid composite resin samples were divided into group I without glycerin application and group II with glycerin application before the light curing process. Both groups were then immersed in an isotonic drink for 18 hours in an incubator. The research continued with roughness testing using a surface roughness tester. Result: There was a significant difference in the roughness of the nanohybrid composite resin immersed in an isotonic drink with and without glycerin application. This is indicated by the p-value < 0.05 in the unpaired bivariate t-test, which means that there is a significant difference in the two sample groups.  Conclusion: The application of glycerin can reduce the roughness of the nanohybrid composite resin immersed in isotonic drink. Keywords: Glycerin application, Nanohybrid composite resin, Roughness.
