Abstract

The fishing gear that is mostly used by fishermen at the Coastal Fishery Port (PPP) Tasik Agung, RembangRegency are mini purse seines and cantrangs. The fishing effort using fishing gear has a positive impact on the welfare of local fishermen. The purpose of this study was to determine the performance of purse seine and cantrang fishing gear at PPP Tasik Agung, Rembang Regency based on specifications, fishing area and fishing season. Data collection was carried out through a survey method. The selection of fishermen as examples is carried out by accidental sampling to respondents who are deemed worthy of being accepted as sources of data/information. Processing and data analysis is done by using qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that the specifications of the mini purse seine fishing gear which are commonly used by fishermen with a fishing fleet of motor boats with a size of 11-20 GT generally have a length from the tip of the left wing to the tip of the right wing of about 250 m, while for ships with a size of 20-30 GT using mini purse seine fishing gear with a length of 360 m. Cantrang nets have different sections, where each section has a thread size, eye size, number of meshes, and rope size and length. Fishing operations in the waters of the Java Sea to the waters of Bawean Island (12 miles to the west and north from the coast of Bawean and Karimun Jawa) to the waters of Kalimantan. The peaks of the cantrang and mini purse seine fishing gear are different.

Abstract

Information related to the exploitation of fishery resources is needed to support decision-making and sustainable fisheries management. This study describes the utilization of capture fisheries resources in Langsa City. The location of this research is Langsa City, Aceh Province. Collecting data through personal interviews, observation, and archiving supporting data have been conducted. Small-scale fishing businesses dominate the characteristics of capture fisheries in Langsa City. The fishing gear used are mini purse seine, gillnet, trammel net and fishing line, operated using fishing vessels <5GT. The fishing season is strongly influenced by the west or east monsoons and the type of fishing gear operated. The perception of small fishermen related to the sustainability of capture fisheries activities from the social aspect is quite good. This is because the traditions/culture of fishermen and the role of the family have a positive impact on the capture fisheries business. Perceptions from the economic aspect stated that they did not support the sustainability of capture fisheries activities, including indicators of rising fishing costs but no change over the last 5 years related to income, catches, and profits. Perception in the ecological aspect states that the state of the aquatic environment can no longer accommodate the high fishing effort made by fishermen. This incident can be seen from the indicator of the number and size of fish catches decreasing/smaller.

Abstract

Purse seine catches that have high economic value are big pelagic whose distribution of fishing areas and landing sites are poorly known. This study aims to find out the distribution of large pelagic purse seine catches based on WPP and their landing ports. The data used is data of purse seine catch from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia in 2019 and 2020 to be analyzed descriptively. The results showed that four big pelagic species caught by purse seines: tuna (Thunnus sp.), mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson), marlin (Istiophorus platypterus) and swordfish (Xiphias gladius). Tuna is caught in all WPP and landed at 62 fishing ports. Mackerel was also caught in all WPP and landed at 74 fishing ports. Marlin were caught at 10 WPP and landed at 27 fishing ports. Swordfish were caught in 4 WPP and landed at 5 fishing ports. Knowledge on distribution of big pelagic purse seine catches based on WPP and landing ports can be used as a basis for evaluating measured fishery policies in terms of catch landing relating to fishing areas.
