Abstract

This research is aimed: (1) to reveal that interference of Indonesian language interrupt when the students at the sixth semester of FKIP in Muhammadiyah University of Mataram translate the English narrative past tense text; (2) to know the kinds of factors interrupted the students’ in translating English narrative the text. The population of study were students in FKIP Muhammadiyah University of Mataram. They consist of three classes from class A to C. The number of the population was 64 students so, the writer took only the 17 students as the samples, by using purposive sampling technique. The results of the research showed that: (1) among 17 students in class A do some interferences, they have less ability to construct the translation target text into the accuracy, acceptable and understandable/ readable sentences by the reader. Moreover, there are two main Indonesian interference found by the researcher, they were morphological interference by misunderstanding of using past tense sentences and syntactical interference by unstructured sentence in the target text, (2) The students’ only could get the range from 4 scores to 8 scores, where 5 students get very poor, 4 students get poor, 2 students get fair, 3 students get fairly good, 3 students get good. The students’ translation percentage for each standard such as accuracy is 16,5%, acceptable is 10,11%, readability is 5,47% and for total all of the students’ mean score is 51,9%, where it took on poor score of translation (3) There are 4 factors made the students difficult to translate the target text, they were 1. Disloyalty of the speakers and receiver 2 Insufficient of vocabulary in translating the source language into the target language, 3. The prestige of the source language and style, 4. Daily habits in the mother tongue influence target text, (4) The students’ translations result are 6 students got score of 0-3 namely very low level, 6 students got score of 5,5-6,5, who categorized as the low level, 2 students got the range score of 6,6-7,5, who categorized “sufficient level”, there are 3 students got this “high level” with the range score of 7,6-9,5, and no one getting the “highest level” score in the range of 9,6-10.

Abstract

This paper examines types of idiom and meaning that found in song lyric of Bruno Mars. In clarifying the meaning of idiom, it is not only find the word from the contextual meaning but also the speakers condition when uttering the message. This study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach focusing on idiomatic expressions and meanings. This study is a qualitative research and data was taken from Bruno Mars album. The researcher used Siedl and Mc Mordie theory to investigate the type of idioms and meanings. From the findings, there are four types of idiom found such as special categories, noun with preposition, verb with preposition and preposition with adverb.The idiom meaning had strong message that delivered in the song. In order to investigate the meaning of idiom that found in Bruno Mars lyrics, the researcher used Leech theory and found two types of meaning in Bruno Mars song lyric

Abstract

Reading is one of the important skills that the students have to master. However, many students have difficulties in comprehending the reading text. To solve this condition, the researcher used schema activation strategy to help students understand reading comprehension. The purpose of this research was to investigate whether the use of schema activation strategy is effective or not in teaching reading comprehension at the second-grade students of MTs Tarbiyatul Mustafid in academic year 2017/2018. This study was quasi-experimental design using two classes were VIII B class was taken as an experimental class, and VII-A was taken as control class. The population of this research involved 60 students from the second grade in MTs Tarbiyatul Mustafid Batu Simpang. By using purposive sampling, the researcher took the students as a sample. In collecting the data, this study used pre-test, treatment, and post-test as the data collection procedure then followed by analyzing the data by using the t-test formula. Then the result of statistical analysis of t-test in this research was 2.85. It was higher than critical values for t- table in the degree of freedom (df) of 58 is 2.021(0.05%) and 2.704(0.01%). The researcher concludes that mean score before and after teaching by using schema activation strategy has a difference. It means the alternative hypothesis (ha) was accepted. The use of schema activation strategy in teaching reading comprehension at the second-grade students of MTs Tarbiyatul Mustafid Batu Rimpang is effective.

Abstract

This research examines the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) to improve the students ability in reading. The population of the research is the second grade students of SMPN I Kediri – West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province. The population consists 120 students. The sample of the study were 30 students which separated into groups, experimental and control group consisting of 15 students for every group. To get the data needed, test instruments in the forms pre and post test were employed. The result of this study found that the students ability using CIRS is higher than the students who did not use CIRC. It shown from the mead deviation score of experimental group was 1429 point and the mean score of control group was 998 point. This fact means that the use of CIRC are improve the students competence in reading effectively. Based on the statistical computation, interval confidence of 0.01 (99 %) , t-test : 4.95 higher than t-table :2.76 and interval confidence of 0.05 (95%) , t-test : 4.95 higher than t-table : 2.05 which is automatically means that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

Abstrak: Program Pengabdian Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran bahasa inggris  bagi anak usia dini dengan menciptakan suasana belajar yang menyenangkan. Pelatihan ini memfasilitasi guru-guru dengan kemampuan bahasa inggris komunikatif yang sesuai dengan karakteristik anak usia dini. Peserta pelatihan terdiri atas 13  guru PAUD di Lingkungan Kekalik Jaya, Kota Mataram. Pelatihan ini  membantu guru mengembangkan serta mengaplikasikan materi dengan menggunakan metode-metode pembelajaran yang menarik. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan selama 8 minggu  sejak  bulan Oktober hingga November 2021 dimana setiap pertemuan dilaksanakan selama 60 menit. Hasil dari pelatihan ini  menunjukkan para peserta  mampu meningkatkan kemampuan  mengajar bahasa inggris dengan cara yang menyenangkan,  mampu mengenal dan memahami lagu, cerita dan puisi  berbahasa inggris dengan baik,  mampu mengkombinasikan materi pengajaran dengan gerakan guna meningkatkan keaktifan anak usia dini. Terlihat adanya peningkatan yang cukup signifikan pada semangat  belajar, motivasi  dan kemampuan berbahasa inggris pada anak-anak usia dini di  PAUD  Lingkungan Kekalik Jaya, Kota Mataram, Nusa Tenggara Barat.Abstract: This community service program aims to improve the quality of learning English for early childhood by creating fun learning zone. This training facilitated teachers with English communicative ability which appropriate with early childhood characteristics. The participants consists of 13 early childhood institutions in Kekalik Jaya District, Mataram City.  This training help teachers to developed and applied materials by using interesting learning methods. This training held for eight weeks from October to November 2021 which allocate 60 minutes for a meeting. The result of this training showed that participants can improve their teaching skills by using fun learning activities, understand song, story and poem better, can combine learning materials with body movement to improve early childhood creativity. It shown significance improvement at learning spirit, motivation and English ability of early childhood in Early childhood institutions, Kekalik Jaya District, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara.

Abstract

Abstrak: Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk membekali peserta program Kejar Paket C dengan keterampilan bahasa inggris praktis yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan mereka guna meningkatkan peluang memperoleh pekerjaan (jobs oriented). Pelatihan ini difokuskan pada kemampuan menguasai empat keterampilan utama dalam bahasa inggris yaitu keterampilan membaca (reading), menulis (writing), menyimak (listening) dan berbicara (speaking). Peserta pelatihan terdiri atas 25 peserta, pelatihan diselenggarakan selama 10 minggu tatap muka dimana tiap kali pertemuan terselenggara selama 90 menit. Indikator keberhasilan pelatihan ini dinilai dari dua dimensi yaitu dimensi output dan outcome. Hasil dari pelatihan ini dapat meningkatkan keterampilan dan motivasi peserta program Kejar Paket C secara signifikan dimana pencapaian peningkatan keterampilan bahasa inggris peserta meningkat menjadi 75 %.Kata Kunci: peningkatan, keterampilan bahasa inggris, pelatihan. Abstract: This training aims to improve English ability of  Kejar Paket C participants based on their needs, this training can improve their chances to get jobs easily. This training focused to mastering four major skills in English such as speaking, writing, listening and reading. This training consists of 25 participants and held for ten weeks, every session consist of 90 minutes. Successful indicator program evaluate from output which assessed from learning materials achievement, the participants comprehension and ability to speak English fluently. Outcome assessed from the participants ability to mastering English orally and writtenly; the comparation of pre and post test. The result of this training can improve the participants ability and motivation. The participants achievement improve  significantly until 75 %. Keywords: improvement, English skills, training

Abstract

Abstrak: Penguasaan keterampilan berbahasa inggris menjadi tantangan tersendiri bagi siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan keterampilan berbahasa inggris siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) dengan menggunakan metode task based learning. Jenis Penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang dilaksanakan melalui dua siklus. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi dan test lisan yang telah diuji validitasnya. Teknik analisis data menggunakan Teknik kualitaif dan kuantitatif. Metode ini merupakan metode pembelajaran yang memberikan tugas – tugas berjenjang sesuai kemampuan pembelajar dan difokuskan pada serangkaian latihan atau aktifitas pembelajaran yang bertujuan untuk tercapainya kemampuan yang lebih baik. Subyek penelitian terdiri atas 21 siswa, pengambilan data dilakukan dengan test berbicara langsung (oral test) dan menulis paragraph singkat pada catatan pribadi mereka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa task based learning dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa inggris siswa SMP kelas IX secara signifikan, Peningkatan tersebut terlihat pada skor rata – rata kompetensi siswa yang meningkat dari jumlah rata - rata siklus pertama 64,5 dengan kategori cukup dan jumlah rata – rata siklus dua 77,7 dengan kategori baik.students English skills at Junior High School Grade IX. through the use of task based learning method.The type of this research is Classroom Action Research which consisted of two cycles. Data collection techniques using observation and oral tests that have been tested for validity. Data analysis techniques using qualitative and quantitative.  This method is a learning method which giving tasks continuously based on students performance and focused on learning exercises or activities in order to reach better performance. There were 21 students from grade IX as subject of the study. The data were collected through oral test and writing students personal diary. The result showed that task based learning could improve the students English skills significantly. The improvement could seen from the average score of the first cycle 64,5 which was categorized as enough competency. Meanwhile, the average score of the second cycle was 77,7 which categorized into good competency.

Abstract

Program pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan membekali keterampilan berbahasa inggris komunikatif bagi remaja putus sekolah di dusun lendang berora, kabupaten Lombok Utara, Nusa Tenggara Barat bertujuan guna membekali mereka dengan kemampuan berbahasa inggris komunikatif secara intensif. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan selama 6 minggu sejak tgl 12 Oktober 2022 hingga 14 November 2022 dengan alokasi waktu 90- menit tiap pertemuan. Materi pelatihan ini difokuskan pada pengenalan fungsi – fungsi bahasa seperti menyapa, meminta maaf, menjelaskan seseorang dan sesuatu, menunjukkan arah, meminta izin dan meminta sesuatu. Metode yang digunakan adalah orientasi, demonstrasi, diskusi, pengulangan, umpan balik dan rutinitas perlakuan. Peserta pelatihan terdiri atas 12 remaja putus sekolah. Hasil dari kegiatan ini terlihat adanya peningkatan keterampilan berkomunikasi aktif dengan menggunakan bahasa inggris serta meningkatnya motivasi para peserta secara signifikan.

Abstract

This community service program aims to equip basic English for fisherman’s children at Sire coast, North Lombok – West Nusa Tenggara Province. This training held for ten weeks, twice a week with time allocation 60 minutes for every session. Topics in this training consists of introducing language functions such as greeting, asking permission, asking direction, apologizing, requesting, explaining something or someone and offering something. Participants consists of 16 (sixteen) fisherman’s children which lived near Sire coast. This program used learning by doing mehod which covering orientation, discussion, demonstration, feedback and repetition. Learning by doing method aroused the children motivation to learn English by direct experiences not only demonstrating or telling. Data collected from tests ( orally - writtenly) and interview. Participants performance measured by using criterion referenced tests, based on the result of the evaluation which covered three language function showed that there are 12 participants (75%) got A (80 – 100) and only 4 participants (25%) got B (65 – 79). It means that there are no participants got score under minimum criterion (65). The result of the program indicated that there is an improvement at their English performance significantly, we can concluded that the implementation of learning by doing method in learning English effective
