Abstract

Curriculum is the design to carry out a particular language program, including subject-matter objectives, sequencing and materials to meet the needs of a designated group of learners in a defined context (Brown, 2000).  The objective of this study is to depict the academic English language curriculum/syllabus of TEFL 1 subject in English Department UM Mataram. The present study analyzes the coherence, consistency, and relevance of the curriculum objectives, content, learning activities, and assessment, institution vision and mission, law, and the nature of the subject matter. Tyler’s rationale model is utilized in analyzing the documents. The result of this study can be used as some considerations in reconstructing the syllabus so that learning experiences will be relevant and consistent with the learning objectives stated in the syllabus.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the target needs (i.e. necessities, lacks and wants) of the students to inform academic writing courses materials. A case study design was employed as this design to provide in-depth data information. To collect the data, questionnaire and interviews were used. Twenty-three undergraduate students of English department at a private university in Mataram West Nusa Tenggara who take academic writing course in the 2019-2020 academic year participated in the study. The result of the study showed that the students need to learn the types of writing texts, vocabulary and construct sentences into paragraph, have good skills in writing different genres since they are lack of grammar knowledge and vocabularies, and improvement on the aspect of teaching writing. This finding may promise implications for updating the current curriculum and materials as practiced for tertiary level English department students in an attempt to keep up with the latest changes in the methodologies of English language teaching. This study recommends that lecturers and universities should conduct a need analysis regularly and updated the curriculum with such insightful needs.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effect of Think-Pair-Share Method toward the students’ reading achievement at MA. Darussalam Beremi. The design of this study is true experimental, in which 111 students as the population and through cluster random sampling, 80 students were selected as the sample. After collecting and computing the data, the writer found that the experimental group were more successful than the students of control group. it can be seen from the critical value of t-test equal to 3.86 is higher than the indication of t- table at the significant level of 5% equals to 1.99, and at the significant level of 1% equals to 2.64 then, at the degree of freedom 78 or nearest 80 on the test indication. In fact, the t-test is significant value for both levels. It means, the cooperative learning method is effective toward the student`s reading achievements. The Think-Pair_Share is effective for teaching reading due to the dependence among the students, it triggers the students to be more active, more communicative, and more interactive in teaching and learning process, and also it applies good evaluation process.

Abstract

This study attempt to investigate the students’ perception on the implementation of Task-Based Language Learning (TBLL) Model. The study involved 18 EFL students as the participants. The data was collected from questionnaire that were administered to all participants and interviews to some students as the representatives.  The result showed that the developed model which highlights teaching steps, classroom situation, time allocation, writing activities, and lecturers' performance in the class and the teaching materials are effective to facilitate students to learn and improve their writing skills. The result of this study also revealed that the developed model was perceived by the students to be very well structured because the learning stage started from introducing to presenting stage, the interaction between the lecturers and the students in the academic writing course was very responsive, the students thought that the lecturers treated the students well, most students had positive perceptions of the teaching materials of academic writing subjects and they felt the learning objectives were achieved. They were able to write topic sentences and composed a full text, their writing structure was better, and they recognized the small things. Then, students became more active, motivated and their understanding of the topic was increased.

Abstract

This research is intended to find out the effectiveness of using authentic materials in teaching descriptive text toward students’ writing ability. This study was conducted in MTs. Nurul Jannah NW Ampenan.There were two classes of eighth-grade students with each class were 20 students. So, the total numbers of students in the eighth grade of MTs Nurul Jannah NW Ampenan were 40 students. The writer took class A as experiment group and class B as a control group. The experimental group was treated by using authentic materials and the control group was treated without authentic materials. Before giving instructions, two groups were given pre-test. After that, they were given post-test. The result showed that the mean score of the experimental group was 28 and the mean score of control group 7,25. The standard deviation of the experimental group was 2363 and the standard deviation of the control group was 173,75. The final result obtained through analysis of the data was the value of t-test 8,042. This consulted to the value of t-table which was 2,750< (8,042>2,750). It indicated that the value of t-test was higher than the value of t-table. It meant that an authentic material was effective in teaching descriptive text toward students’ writing ability.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to analyze the english teacher’s implementation of Genre Based Approach in teaching discussion text and to find out the difference between the students’ writing before and after implementation of Genre Based Approach. The study was a descriptive qualitative research design with characteristics of case study which focus on holistic description and explanation. This research was conducted in Fourth Semester Students of Muhammadiyah University of Mataram in academic year 2012/2013. The research was employed two data collection procedures particularly classroom observation and documentation of students text which was analyzed by using functional grammar. The results of this study shows that teacher applied Genre Based Approach in teaching discussiontext based on teaching and learning cycles such as Building Knowledge Of Field, Modelling Of Text, andIndependent Construction Of Text. This study also reveals that students can arrange discussion text regarding to schematic structure and language feature especially transitivity system. This study recommends that the Genre Based Approach should be implemented in teaching writing and The students in tertiary level should understand and mastery on schematic structure and language feature of text types regarding to functional grammar.

Abstract

Abstrak: Pendampingan pembelajaran  bahasa Inggris ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengetahuan secara teoritis dan praktis penggunaan bahasa Inggris dasar, expresi ekspresi serta kosakata yang digunakan. Kegiatan pelatihan ini melibatkan para santri ponpes Nurul Islam. Mentor dalam kegiatan ini melibatkan dosen-dosen bahasa Inggris yang memiliki keterampilan dan penguasaan bahasa Inggris yang baik. Pelaksanaan kegiatan pendampingan bertempat di ponpes Nurul Islam, Kekalik Sekarbela, Mataram.  Pelatihan ini diadakan untuk untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris siswa. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa para siswa sangat antusias dalam mengikuti pembelajaran yang dapat dilihat dari keaktifan dan kehadiran mereka selama mengikuti kegiatan. Dari kegiatan pelatihan ini diharapkan meningkatnya kemampuan Bahasa inggris para siswa.Abstract: This English learning community service aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge of the use of basic English, expressions and vocabulary used. This training activity involved the students of the Nurul Islam Islamic Boarding School. Mentors in this activity were English lecturers who have good English skills and mastery. The implementation of the mentoring activities took place at the Nurul Islam Islamic Boarding School - Kalik Sekarbela, Mataram. This training was held to improve students' English language skills. The results of the activity showed that the students were very enthusiastic to participate in the learning activity which could be seen from their activeness and presence during the mentoring. From this training activity, it is hoped that the students' English skills will increase.

Abstract

ABSTRAKTujuan utama pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini yaitu untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru dalam mengelola kelas online melalui pelatihan pengajaran menggunakan Quizizz  pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk siswa SMP pada guru-guru SMPN 2 kediri. Quizizz  merupakan web tool untuk membuat permainan kuis interaktif yang digunakan dalam pembelajaran di kelas. Quizizz  tidak hanya dapat dikerjakan saat pembelajaran di kelas saja, tetapi juga dapat dibuat soal untuk pekerjaan rumah, sehingga dapat dimainkan kapan saja dan dimana saja oleh siswa asalkan tidak melebihi batas waktu. Hasil observasi awal ditemukan bahwa guru-guru menggunakan WA Group dan Google Classroom. Pelatihan dilakukan dengan pemberian materi, tanya jawab, dan praktek pembuatan media Quizizz . Untuk mengetahui keberhasilan kegiatan pengabdian ini, dilakukan evaluasi dengan pengisian angket respon terhadap kepuasan menggunakan Quizizz . Hasil angket menunjukkan respon peserta pelatihan puas terhadap pelaksanaan PKM ini dan menjawab sangat mudah sebesar 100%. Tingkat kepuasan peserta pelatihan dari segi materi, penyampaian materi, proses diskusi serta pelatihan individu 100%. Sedangkan 50% menyatakan mengalami peningkatan terkait kemampuan menggunakan media Quizizz  dan pengelolaan kelas online. Dari hasil pelatihan disarankan agar guru-guru di masa pandemi ini memahami dan menggunakan media Quizizz  agar evaluasi pembelajaran terhadap siswa lebih efektif dan menyenangkan. Kata kunci: pelatihan; guru; Quizizz . ABSTRACTThis community services aims to improve teacher competency in administering online classes by providing junior high school teacher at SMPN 2 Kediri with Quizizz  training. Quizizz  is a website that allows you to create interactive quiz games in the classroom. Quizizz  can be used in class and to create homework questions so that students can play it whenever and wherever they choose as long as the time limit is not exceeded. English teachers use WA Group and Google Classroom after performing preliminary observation. The training was conducted by distributing materials, discussion, and offering hands-on practice in creating Quizizz  media. An evaluation was done to determine the success of this service activity by filling out a response questionnaire to in using Quizizz . The findings of the questionnaire revealed that the training participants were satisfied with the implementation of this activity and answered very easily by 100%. The level of satisfaction of the training participants in material, material delivery, discussion process, and individual training is 100%. Meanwhile, 50% of the respondents said their abilities improved in using Quizizz  media. It is suggested that teachers understand and use the Quizizz  during this pandemic so that student evaluation of learning is more enjoyable. Keywords: training; teacher; Quizizz .

Abstract

Abstrak: Tujuan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah melakukan pendampingan percakapan bahasa Inggris bagi pramusaji kedai di kawasan pantai Impos. Pelaksanaan kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 26 orang pramusaji di kawasan pantai Impos yang masih kurang memadai dalam berbahasa Inggris komunikatif. Metode dalam pelaksanaan kegiatan dilakukan dengan memberikan pelatihan menggunakan bahasa Inggris praktis, yaitu berlatih keterampilan keterampilan menggunakan bahasa Inggris dalam berinteraksi jual beli dengan tamu asing. Hasil evaluasi dari pengujian kemampuan berbicara menunjukkan peningkatan kemampuan bahasa inggris yang diindikasikan dari hasil rata-rata pretest adalah 38, sedangkan post-test sebesar 50,2. Peningkatan ini menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan pelatihan bahasa inggris bagi para pramusaji di pantai Impos berhasil.Abstract: The purpose of this community service is to assist the group of waiters at the Impos beach with basic speaking training. The implementation of this activity was attended by 26 waiters in the Impos beach area who were still inadequate in communicative English.They had low English-speaking proficiency in daily conversation. The training activities involved pre-test, treatment, and post-test. It trained them how to sell their products to foreign tourists. The results of the training showed improvement of their speaking skills that are indicated by a significant different between their scores in pre-test and post-test. Their average score in the pretest is 38, while the post-test is 50.2. This community service helped the waiters and vendors improved their English daily conversation skills.

Abstract

Abstrak: Penggunaan gadget bagi anak bagai dua mata pisau. Di satu sisi memberikan dampak yang berbahaya bagi pengembangan karakternya, namun di sisi lain juga memberikan banyak manfaat bagi perkembangan anak, namun. Oleh karena itu, untuk mengembangkan kemampuan bahasa dan social anak maka dapat dikatakan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi Lingokids ini sangat membantu dalam memperkaya dan meningkatkan pengetahuan kosakata bahasa inggris. Ada hal penting dengan menerapkan aplikasi ini yaitu anak pada umumnya memiliki sikap positif terhadap pembelajaran seperti kosakata melalui ponsel, walaupun di sisi lain, keterbatasan teknologi dan aktivitas pembelajaran yang tidak biasa dapat menghalangi kemampuan anak khususnya dalam mengenalkan dan meningkatkan kosakata anak.Abstract:  The use of gadgets like two blades for children. On the one hand, it has a harmful impact on their character development, but it provides many benefits for children's development also. Therefore, to develop language and social skills, it can be said that the use of this lingokids application helps students in enriching and increasing knowledge of English vocabulary. There is an important thing by applying lingokids games in vocabulary learning, namely that students generally have a positive attitude towards learning through smartphones, although, technological limitations and unusual learning activities can hinder children's abilities, especially in English vocabulary.
