Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of reward and punishment on student achievement and discipline. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with the sampling technique, namely purposive sampling. The data was collected using interviews and documentation and was analyzed qualitatively. The research results showed several rewards and punishment types contribute to the student's learning achievement and discipline. The types of rewards that contribute effectively to students learning achievement are praise, respect and material prizes, and a sign of appreciation. In contrast, types of punishments that affect the students learning discipline are physical punishment and inconvenient punishment. In conclusion, the effect of reward and punishment on student achievement and discipline, among others, increases student enthusiasm for learning, motivates students to maintain achievement, and makes students more disciplined in learning. Abstract

ABSTRACT The aims of this research are to find out that extent parents are involved in their children reading comprehension at home and to know the factors trigger the communication between parents and the English teacher toward the students reading comprehension. By using the qualitative research this study described the research finding using a triangulation technique to gather the data from the questionnaires, interview, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) from 10 parents and one english teacher at SMA Negeri 1 Lampasio. The data analysis indicates two things. The first, parents role toward the students’ reading comprehension is Low. It was found by the result of questionnaire that showed there were 10%-20% parents involved in their child reading comprehension at home. The second, the factors triggers the communication between parents and the English teacher were progress report that given by the English teacher to parents used an examination sheet and the same living place between parents and the English teacher. Abstract

Abstract

This research is pre experimental research design consist of one group pre-test and post-test. The Population of this research is the Eight grade of MTs. Haji Hayuun Salumpaga in 2016/2017 academic year. The sample of this research is selected by using purposive sampling technique and the selected class is VIII B consisted of 24 students. In collecting the data, the researcher took from pre-test and post-test. The researcher analyzed the data by using SPSS program 16,0 . The result of the test showed that the students’ mean score in posttest 88.58 is higher than pretest 44.42. To know the significant difference between pretest and posttest, the researcher compared the value of t-counted and t-table by applying 0.05 level of significance for two-tailed test with 23 degree of freedom (24-1=23), the researcher found that the tcount (11.956) is higher than ttable (2.069) and the hypothesis of this research is accepted. The researcher concluded that using vocabulary card can increase students’ vocabulary mastery at Eight grade of MTs. Haji Hayyun Salumpaga.Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Vocabulary Card.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the empirical evidence concerning whether SQ3R technique was effective or not to teach students reading comprehension. This study was held in March 2015 at MAN Tolitoli. This study used a quantitative method in the design of pre-experimental study.  The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling. The researcher took one class as the subject of this study. The sample was X IIS 3. The improvement of students’ score can be seen from the differences between pretest and posttest. The mean score of pretest was 65.88 and it improved to 81.48 in posttest. Moreover, the minimum mastery criterion of English lesson was 76 (seventy-six). Then the data of both test were analyzed by using T-test  and the result showed that the T-test value 8.39 was greater than T-table value 2.064. according to the criteria of the test the result showed that there was a significant improvement between students’ achievement in reading comprehension by using SQ3R technique before and after pretest and posttest were conducted. It meant that SQ3R technique was effective and applicable at the first grade of MAN Tolitoli to teach students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: Improving, Reading, SQ3R technique, Comprehension.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether mind mapping strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension or not..This research is pre experimental research design consist of one group pre-test and post-test. The Population of this research is the eighth grade of SMPN 5 Tolitoli in 2016/2017 academic year. The sample of this research is selected by using purposive sampling technique and the selected class is VIII b consisted of 21 students. In collecting the data, the researcher took from the result of pre-test and post-test. The researcher analized the data  statically.The result of the test showed that the students’ mean score in posttest 81.14 is higher than pretest 51.4  To know the significant difference between pretest and posttest, the researcher compared the value of t-counted and t-table by applying 0.05 level of significance for two-tailed test with 20 degree of freedom (21-1=20), the researcher found that the tcounted (15,98) is higher than ttable (2,080) and the hypothesis of this research is accepted.The researcher concluded that application mind mapping strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension of eight grade at SMP N 5 Tolitoli.  Key words:improving reading comprehension,and mind mapping.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out whether the use of self-questioning strategy improve the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text.The design of this research is experimental research. The population of this researchis the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Tolitoli in the academic year of 2016/2017. The number of the subjects is 35 students. The data areobtain by administering reading test to the VIII B. The research is started by giving pre-test, treatments,and post-test. The data of the test areanalyze by using t-test formula to know the difference of the students’comprehension in reading narrative text. In the pre-test, the mean score of the experimental research is 49.34. The mean score of post-test of the experimental research is 83.20. The result of the t-test differenceis 11.848and t-table is2.032. It means that t-value is higherthan t-table (11.848>2.032). The calculation reveal that the hypothesis about asignificant difference on reading comprehension between students who arethrough narrative text by using Self-Questioning strategy.Based on the research conduct, it is  prove that the use of Self-Questioning strategy is effective as a strategy to improve students’ Reading Comprehension In Narrative Text of VIII Grade At SMPN 3 Tolitoli. Key Words: Improve, Reading Comprehension,Self-Questioning strategy,Narrative text,

Abstract

The objective of the research is to identify whether the use of story map technique can improve students’ ability in writing narrative text. This pre-experimental study uses 23 students as a sample. They are grade eight at MTs DDI Kel. BaruTolitoli. The procedure of this research consists of pretest, treatment, and posttest. The researcher gives pretest and posttest to know the use of story map technique can improve the students’ ability in writing narrative text or not. The result of the analysis shows that story map technique contributes greatly to the students in comprehending narrative text. It can be seen by the difference of the mean score between pre-test and post-test. The mean score of pre-test is 62.30 while in the post-test improve up to 82.09. The data of this research are analyzed by SPSS Program 16. Moreover, the Minimum Mastery Criterion of English lesson is 75 (seventy-five). Then the data of both test are analyze by using T-test, and the result show that the T-test value 7.572 is greater than T-table value 2.074. It can be inferred that story map technique is very effective to improve students’ ability in writing narrative text. Keywords: Improving, reading comprehension, narrative text, scanning technique.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out what are the causes of students anxiety in speaking mainly in English subject. This type of research was a qualitative research method in which the research location is MA DDI Lakatan, whose data sources consist of 5 students namely Rf, Sm, Hk, Sw, Sp. The data collection method included interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The data analysis technique was qualitative descriptive analysis (data reduction, data display and conclusion drawer). The result of interview showed that the students felt anxiety which were caused by some aspects; they fear of making mistake, less confident when they asked to speak in front of the class, fear of being ridiculed by peers, and had limited by vocabulary. The result of questionnaire also stated that the second grade students of MA DDI Lakatan felt anxiety in speaking English.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the difficulties of English teachers in using e-learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research uses qualitative research. The participants were 10 English teachers from different high schools in Tolitoli Regency, Central Sulawesi. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaires and interviews according to the topic. These findings reveal that English teachers experience three obstacles during online learning, including knowledge about the use of e-learning, quality of internet connection, and physical condition.
