Abstract

Abstract

One of the main problems faced by farmers in Lampung today is the limited or scarcity of subsidized fertilizers. Meanwhile, there is an interesting phenomenon that has occurred on campus, including at FMIPA, University of Lampung (Unila), that about waste. So far, organic waste in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Unila, has not been utilized optimally. The organic waste is only collected and deposited at the Integrated Waste Management Site (TPST) at Unila to be sorted and then taken to the Final Disposal Site (TPA) of Bandar Lampung City. These conditions prompted us, as academics at the University of Lampung, to be moved to carry out a community service program with the theme "Conversion of organic waste in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Lampung into Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC) using solid liquid (SL) techniques." This PKM activity aims to process organic waste into liquid organic fertilizer. The processing of organic waste into liquid organic fertilizer is carried out using the soluble liquid technique, in which the organic waste is chopped and then pressed using a press machine, the pressed liquid is added to the starter solution so that the solid particles can dissolve. The dregs resulting from the press are also added to the starter solution so that the dregs can be used as animal feed or compost. The resulting product is applied to plants around FMIPA Unila. The results of this PKM activity were in the form of 60 liters of liquid organic fertilizer (POC) from 100 kg of organic waste, in other words, a yield of 60% was obtained. The resulting POC was then applied to plants in the FMIPA environment. Apart from products in the form of POC, this activity was also able to slowly change the behavior of the Unila FMIPA academic community towards existing organic waste. It is hoped that regular coaching will change the FMIPA environment to be cleaner, healthier and greener. The liquid organic fertilizer produced can also be packaged to be further sold to farmers at affordable prices, so as to increase the economic value of organic waste which has not been utilized so far and also increase the income of some of the education staff in FMIPA Unila.

Abstract

Among the various potential gardens in Pekon Bumiratu, Pagelaran District, Pringsewu Regency, coconut plants stand out. However, the processing of coconut produce by farmers is suboptimal, as the coconut yield is typically consumed or sold without undergoing processing. This is primarily due to the limited knowledge and skills of local farmers regarding coconut processing and its derivatives. This activity aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of coconut farmers in processing coconuts into Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) using a non-heating method. The activities involved a combination of lecture methods and practical demonstrations. The VCO produced during the activities underwent laboratory analysis to assess its quality. The results of the activity indicate a significant increase in understanding by 61.6%. This suggests a substantial improvement in public knowledge regarding the processing of coconuts into VCO. Laboratory analysis of the VCO produced by the participants revealed a water content of 0.18%, an iodine value of 8,150 g iod/100g, a free fatty acid content of 0.17%, and a peroxide value of 1.32 mg/Kg Ek. These results align with the quality standards outlined in SNI 7381-2008 for VCO.

Abstract

Cyperus rotundus Linn is a plant that is historically used in traditional medicine with anti-cancer potential. Despite the evidence of C. rotundus anti-cancer effect on various human carcinoma cell lines, its pharmacological mechanism remains unclear, particularly its non-polar fraction. This study was employed to provide mechanistic insight regarding the anti-cancer properties of C. rotundus non-polar fraction by integrating in silico and in vitro approach. The network pharmacology study was used to observe the molecular targets of n-hexane fraction of C. rotundus, confirmed by molecular docking simulation using Autodock 4.2. The in vitro toxicity using BSLT method was used to strengthen the in silico result. The network pharmacology investigation revealed several core targets including PI3K, MAPK1, mTOR, RAF1, and NF-κB in the potential anti-cancer mechanism of C. rotundus. The molecular docking study illustrated that compound 3 (Isopetasol) and compound 9 (alpha-cyperone) as the most promising compound in n-hexane fraction of C. rotundus, with free binding energies consistently less than -7 kcal/mol in all targets. The in vitro BSLT signified the in silico results, highlighting the highest toxicity of fraction 3 exhibited among others. Integrating the network pharmacology and molecular docking simulation along with in vitro toxicity have provided evidence of the anti-cancer potential of n-hexane fraction of C. rotundus. Specific compounds and the molecular targets responsible for its anti-cancer properties have been identified, warranting further investigations.
