Abstract

This study constituted an analysis of an ideal marriage in the novel published in 2018. The significant components of the marriage relationship found in the novel that could be categorized into an ideal marriage were the topics to discuss. One of the significant theories of an ideal marriage used in this study was A Triangular of Love that appears in three significant components: intimacy, passion and commitment that reflected the subjective experience. Intimacy could be considered the warm component because it encompassed the feeling of comfort and tenderness in a relationship. Then, passion consisted of motivational and was considered the hot component, in that it usually included the most intense feeling. Finally, commitment involved deliberate choice to love someone and to maintain that love. It was considered the cold component (Sternberg: 1986). The research was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The research results showed that the three points of an ideal marriage in the novel, i.e. intimacy, passion, and commitment were clearly reflected by the major characters in the novel.

Abstract

This research aims at finding lexical cohesion in high and low-graded lexical cohesion types on the students' narrative writing. The researcher wants to reveal the reasons why the writing problems exist in lexical cohesion and also to find out what way that the students will use to solve the lexical types in writing narrative text. The present research uses the types of lexical cohesion as proposed by Halliday and Matthiensen (2014). The lexical cohesion items consist of repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, and meronymy. The data of this research are derived from students' writing through writing research papers. This research was conducted in qualitative. The results show that repetition becomes the highest occurrence in the students' writing as there are 240 occurrences (64%) in total types of lexical. Nevertheless, the least kind of lexical cohesion is hyponymy. There are only 20 occurrences (6, 6%). It can be seen that the meaning relation in the text occurs among the six types of lexical cohesion to make cohesive text. Besides that, the context of the text itself also refers to coherent text. It means that the text should consist of interrelated sentences to achieve good unity. Both are related to each other in creating well-structured text. The students were sometimes difficult to connect one word with other words. There might be a reluctance of translating the classification of the real words of EFL. Pedagogically, the students need to get studying vocabularies professionally to upgrade the stage of English into an advanced level especially in teaching English writing ability. It was recommended to teachers or lecturers to take an in-depth look at the EFL learners' problems in writing English more than and the English lecturers practice the prompt way to master vocabulary as the core of enhancing the writing quality

Abstract

In this study, the problem encountered was the incorrect use of countable and uncountable nouns in procedural texts written by 10th-grade students at SMAS HKBP Sidorame Medan. Students often had difficulty distinguishing between these two types of nouns, especially in using quantifiers and forming plurals. The purpose of this study was to identify the types of errors made by students and determine which errors occurred most frequently. This study referred to the Error Analysis theory proposed by (Dulay, H., Burt, M. and Krashen, 2013). The errors were classified into four categories: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The research used a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected from students’ procedural texts and analyzed based on the error classification. The results showed that out of 100 identified errors, misformation was the most frequent error, accounting for 37%. This was followed by addition errors (29%), omission (21%), and misordering (13%). In addition, errors in using uncountable nouns were higher (70%) than countable nouns (30%). These findings indicate that students still face difficulties in understanding and applying the rules of countable and uncountable nouns. The dominance of misformation errors shows that students do not fully understand noun forms in English grammar. Therefore, teaching countable and uncountable nouns needs more attention and a structured approach to improve students’ grammatical accuracy in writing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the realization of textual function in English listening materials using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework proposed by Halliday. The focus of this study is on the analysis of Theme types, namely Topical, Interpersonal, and Textual Themes, found in clauses 1–85 in Table 4.1. The data were taken from listening texts in an English textbook for Grade XII students. This study employed a qualitative research design using document analysis as the research method. The data were analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Each clause was identified and classified based on its Theme type to examine how textual meaning is organized within the text. Based on the findings, three types of Theme are identified in the data, namely Topical, Interpersonal, and Textual Themes. The results show that Topical Theme is the most dominant type, accounting for (80%) of the total clauses, followed by Interpersonal Theme (10.6%) and Textual Theme (9.4%). Textual Themes are realized through conjunctions, adjuncts, and other linking elements such as if, maybe, and every month, which function to organize and connect ideas within the text. this study demonstrates that textual function plays a significant role in organizing meaning and maintaining coherence in listening texts, particularly through the use of Theme as the point of departure of the message
