Abstract

Comedies of different countries have their own absurdities. Absurdity is something that human often experience for searching the meaning of life. Therefore, a comparative study of literature is used in this study to compare absurdities in the comedy originating from Madura and England. The objective of this study is to find out how the absurdities are shown in the Madurese and English comedy. Then, the method of this study is qualitative method. The sources of the data of this study are Juragan Hadroh and Gara-Gara Tukang Cukur EDAN!! by Sukur CS that were performed in 2021 and are compared to George Bernard Shaw’s Too True To Be Good that was performed in 1949. This study uses theory of absurdity that can be called “the philosophy of the absurd” by Albert Camus. The data of this study are in the form of characters utterance, narrator narrations, and gestures. This study found that both of Madurese and English comedies are existed as the form of searching for the meaning of life. Absurdities that are shown by Madurese and English comedies start from the names of characters, utterances and acts of the characters.

Abstract

The objective of study is to explore the relationship between visual and verbal elements within the frame of multimodal discourse analysis in Madura tourism promotion. Promotion in the form of moving images with verbal language makes it easier for readers and potential tourists to see tourist attractions more closely and realistically. This study is descriptive qualitative using 3 videos of Madura tourism promotion, in particular tourism promotions of Bangkalan, Pamekasan, and Sampang regencies on Madura Island, Indonesia. Only scene representing religious tourism as the data of this study in which there are 8 data of religious tourism images. There are two parts of data analysis: visual and verbal analyses.  Visual semiotic mode of scenes and images were analyzed using visual grammar by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006).  In addition, verbal data are all of utterances generated during the scenes and the still images were analyzed based on appraisal framework by Martin and White (2005) especially on the attitude system.  Results show that tourism promotional videos use more than one mode of communication or semiotic system elements to create meaning through representational and interactive structures, compositional meanings, and verbal language.  All of the compositions can come together to create messages to the public, in this case information about tourist attractions and their locations that represent the religiosity of Madura.

Abstract

This study examines the translation methods used in labeling collections of objects at the Cakraningrat Museum Bangkalan. The Cakraningrat Museum Bangkalan is an institution that aims to collect, maintain, and exhibit objects of historical, artistic, cultural, or scientific value. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to identify and analyze translation methods using Newmark's theory (1988). The results of this study indicate that translators use several translation methods such as literal translation methods, faithful translation methods, semantic translation methods, and communicative translation methods with the most dominant literal translation method used.Keywords: culture, museum, translation, labeling, collection  Abstrak  Penelitian ini mengkaji metode penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam pelabelan koleksi benda di Museum Cakraningrat Bangkalan. Museum Cakraningrat Bangkalan merupakan sebuah lembaga yang bertujuan untuk mengoleksi, merawat, dan memamerkan objek-objek bernilai sejarah, seni, budaya, atau ilmu pengetahuan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis metode penerjemahan mengguakan teori Newmark (1988). Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerjemah menggunakan beberapa metode penerjemahan seperti metode penerjemahan harfiah, metode penerjemahan setia (faithful), metode penerjemahan semantis, dan metode penerjemahan komunikatif dengan metode penerjemahan harfiah yang paling dominan digunakan.  Kata kunci: budaya, museum, penerjemahan, pelabelan, koleksi

Abstract

Typical food is a factor that is used by a region as an attraction to attract tourists. Culinary in an area is certainly different from the other areas. Madura is an island located in East Java Province. In this study aims to determine student perceptions of culinary from Madura. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to describe students' perceptions the names of foods that have been determined. In this study, it was found that 52% of students knew about Madurese culinary and some of them often consumed. While 48% of students did not know the food in question because they came from another area of Madura. Some of the food was mentioned as coming from 2 regions by correspondents. This triggers different perceptions of each individual student. Keywords: Perceptions, Student, Culinary, Madura

Abstract

Abstract: The intersection of race, gender, and religion creates complex and often invisible forms of marginalization for women of color in Western societies, especially Muslim women who face overlapping systems of discrimination that cannot be understood through single-axis frameworks. This study aims to examine how these intersecting identities shape both marginalization and agency in Leila Aboulela’s Minaret (2005), with a focus on the protagonist Najwa’s transformation from a privileged Sudanese university student to a marginalized domestic worker in London. Using a qualitative descriptive approach rooted in naturalistic inquiry, the study employs close reading techniques to analyze character dialogues, narrations, and internal monologues, utilizing the qualitative method of Miles et al. (2014) three-step analytical process of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis shows that Najwa’s identity as a Sudanese Muslim woman is deeply influenced by systemic intersections of racial hierarchies, gender roles, and religious marginalization that create unique forms of discrimination beyond individual identities. The findings show how her privilege in Sudan loses meaning within London’s racialized labor markets, pushing her into exploitative domestic work that reflects Collins’ “Mammy” controlling image while also limiting her agency through structural barriers. Despite systemic restrictions, Najwa shows limited agency through religious practices and subtle acts of resistance, though these are heavily constrained by intersecting systems that use her multiple identities to justify exploitation while erasing her complexity and humanity.
