Abstract

This study presented the development of numerical model to investigate the behavior of the friction force between piston seal and cylinder bore. Two dimensional finite element model with constant velocity input was built. Numerical simulation showed the same trend as the experimental results from literature, with different of less than 5%. This comparison indicated that numerical model can be used for further simulation. At the end of the study, the friction force behavior for different stroke lengths were shown.

Abstract

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is the most popular maintenance method in manufacturing industry. There are 8 TPM pillars, two of them are performing autonomous maintenance (AM) and preventive maintenance (PM) with specific guidance, which is called TPM Checklists. For well-established technology, the checklists are provided by machine vendor, and the users only need to follow them. However, for customized technology, users need to create the checklists by themselves. This situation requires specific guidance how to develop it. This research studies how to develop TPM checklist using functional based approach. Research was conducted by making TPM checklists for disc milling machine, then the developed checklists were validated to the existing TPM checklist built by the previous researchers. Results showed that the accuracy level reached 91.67%. It means that functional based approach can be an alternative solution to create and develop TPM checklists

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of depth of cut and feed rate variations on machining time in the C-Axis collet process. The research method employed was an experimental approach using Mastercam software. This study's independent variables were variations in cut depth (0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm) and feed rate (110 ft/min, 125 ft/min, 140 ft/min), while the controlled variable was a spindle speed of 1036 rpm. The tools used were 8 mm and 4 mm diameter flat endmills. The results showed that the shortest machining time was achieved in Toolpath 2 with a depth of cut of 1.0 mm and a feed rate of 140 ft/min, resulting in a time of 12.47 s. In contrast, the longest machining time occurred in Contour Toolpath 1 with a depth of cut of 0.5 mm and a feed rate of 110 ft/min, taking 141.15 s. This research can be further developed to establish standards for optimizing machining time efficiency in C-Axis processes.

Abstract

Abstract

Automation technology is expected can enhance productivity, reduce unnecessary cost, and avoid the potential upcoming accidents. However, many automation machineries don’t fulfil safety requirements and have no third party safety certification. This situation requires internal risk assessment as a gate before technology deployment in order to reduce potential hazardous events. This research applies internal risk assessment of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)-based automation technology according to ISO 12100. Mechanical hazard simulator is built to describe the potential hazard and estimate risk level. Alternative solutions for technology retrofit is selected and built to reduce risk level. At the end of the research, risk level comparison is presented as the evidence of risk level reduction.

Abstract

This research examined the potential of essential oil–based bio-additives derived from citronella, clove, and patchouli to enhance the physicochemical properties, engine performance, and emission characteristics of Pertalite fuel. The study utilized Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with a Central Composite Design (CCD) to assess additive concentrations between 0.1 and 0.3 mL per liter of Pertalite. Findings indicated that these low-level additions did not significantly affect density, which remained similar to pure Pertalite. Likewise, power output and exhaust emissions (CO2 and O2) showed no notable improvements. Statistical evaluation using Design Expert® revealed all regression models were non-significant (p > 0.05), and optimization attempts failed to identify a valid optimum, with desirability values below 0.5. The minimal impact is attributed to the very low additive dosage, insufficient to influence atomization, combustion, or emission reduction. Additionally, gasoline’s non-polar nature limits sensitivity to parameters such as pH, while operational variations during engine testing (temperature, RPM, and load) may have masked minor effects. In summary, essential oil bio-additives at concentrations below 0.03% by volume are ineffective for measurable improvements. Future studies should investigate higher concentrations, purification of active compounds, improved blending techniques, and stricter engine testing protocols. The contribution of oxygenated compounds to combustion enhancement also merits further exploration.
